In a Summer Season | Elizabeth Taylor

Mehso-so

This reminds me of Barbara Pym novel but with sex. Nothing much happens. Just a view into people's everyday lives. Has one my pet peeves - overly long chapters. I hate to stop in the middle of a chapter. I found myself losing interest because it rambled on. If chapters had been shorter, could have read a few pages here and there and it would have been more enjoyable. ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig My favorite quote "I could never have married a man who didn‘t simply dote on Jane Austen or Henry James,‘ she had said years ago. Alan had been the most satisfactory devotee and often talked of Donwell and Pemberley and Poynton—their aspect, the soil on which they stood, the position they commanded— as if he had just recently been staying at them." 6d
willaful I ran across her books all the time when I was hunting down Virago Modern Classics and could never get into them. 6d
Crinoline_Laphroaig @willaful such a beautiful cover, I wanted to love it. 6d

Timeline Readalong came to end today. Having just finished The Shell Seekers. I particularly liked the mentions of Penelope Keating. Although her sone Neil has some character growth. I feel he's still self centered.

I particularly liked setting, party, Archie and Isabelle. Violet was my favorite. Spunky older ladies are my favorite thing about Rosamunde Pilcher. 👵

#RosamundePilcherInEverySeason

Crinoline_Laphroaig Mostly listened to audio. Lottie is downright creepy. Henry was whiny. Wasn't particularly interested in that part of the story. 2w

But keep me on the tag list @julieclair because I want to keep going. Up next is that stack of recipes I kept from the magazines I discarded. Need to sort and put in my Seasonal Recipe Notebooks.

It's time for #JaneAdjacent Book Club.
1️⃣ New read. Audio and Print. I read Ghosted - A Northanger Abbey Novel with #PemberLittens last year. So when I saw the author had written a book about Georgie Darcy, I immediately wanted to read. LOVE the cover.
2️⃣ Always Lizzy Bennet.
3️⃣ Georgie and Lizzy conversations. ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig 4️⃣ “My big brother, Fitzwilliam Darcy, could suck it.” Great opening. Set the tone.
“I could help Fitz Darcy be happy, for once in his goddamn life.”

“Me and my new boyfriend, this charcuterie platter, are going to find somewhere we can be alone.”

5️⃣ I always feel like September/after Labor Day is the perfect time for a fresh start. Give me a new planner, colored pens, pencils, stickers and I'm sooo happy.
1mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig 6️⃣ No, I wasn't in Band but I love to watch them.

7️⃣ I'm kinda of klutzy, so tripping over my own feet is something I'm used to. Plus I feel like that would be easier to recover from.

8️⃣ Wickham plays trumpet? For some reason I found that hilarious. Then the fact that he was a great trumpet player but too cool to show up for practice seemed so Wickham. Also I could totally see modern Wickham running a plagiarism ring.⬇️
1mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig I spent some time at the beginning of the book yelling at Georgie when she made bad decisions. I really enjoyed when she stood up for herself with Wickham and had adult conversation with Darcy.

willaful 1. New read. I chose audio, which was mostly very good, except for a tendency to feel OTT in the more emotional passages. I generally liked it and would read more by the author.

2. I also really liked this book's Lizzy.

3. George and Fitz by the hot tub.

4. Since I listened to the audio, i don't have text to refer to. :-( The opening is very funny.

5. I do a little through my kid, who's in community college. It's fun to take her shopping.

1mo
willaful 6. Nope, though I was in several school choirs. I also enjoy watching them especially at Pride parades.

7. I'd much prefer being able to make expensive mistakes and not be worried about the money than to fall. 😂

8. I thought this was a clever take and an excellent way to approach the retelling for a YA audience. Much better than the “remixes“ recently published.
1mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig @willaful there were moments when the angst was just to much on audio. Especially at first. But I enjoyed it not quite as much as 1mo

It's time for Austen in August! And while yes I do tend to celebrate Jane Austen all year long, it is tradition to read as much as possible in August.

Up first is Persuasion for next week's Jane Austen House Museum Book Club. My collection isn't as big as my Pride and Prejudice one, but some lovely editions none the less. 🎩📖📚

Panpan
Crinoline_Laphroaig 1️⃣ Reread but I didn't remember anything specific. I vaguely remember reading after the movie came out. After hearing a major spoiler about death of a character in later book, I had no desire to continue.

Started with print I was struggling, so I borrowed Library audiobook so I could get through it. Finally finished this morning in print. ⬇️
2mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig First Impressions: ‘129 lbs. (but post-Christmas)‘....... ‘130 lbs. (terrifying slide into obesity—why? why?), alcohol units 6 (excellent), cigarettes 23 (v.g.), calories 2472.‘

What the HELL? More on this below. 2️⃣ Always Darcy.
3️⃣ When Bridget is watching Pride and Prejudice and discussing Mr Darcy vs Mark Darcy.
4️⃣ “Mr. Darcy would never do anything so vain and frivolous as to be an actor and yet Mr. Darcy is an actor.”⬇️

2mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig 5️⃣ Turkey Curry Buffet. Surely I could find something to eat.

6️⃣ Would depend on my mood that particular day. It could be enjoyable to wear eccentric outfit and make up outlandish stories. But then again a Duvet Day sounds lovely.

7️⃣ I'm keeping a journal about this first year in my new house. Also have a gardening journal. ⬇️
2mo
See All 9 Comments
Crinoline_Laphroaig 8️⃣This book hasn't aged well. Bridget's obsession with her weight, the way she goes from binge eating to dieting is so unhealthy. She's not overweight, she has no self worth. It was interesting to revisit through much older eyes. There's definitely a lot of the dialogue that is just so cringy. ⬇️

2mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig 9️⃣ I'm having a watch party of the movie with my friend Claire on Instagram tomorrow at Noon CST/6pm GMT. You can join in with us or like Book Club save post and comment later.

julieclair Houseguests have resulted in limited reading time this month, so I didn‘t get to read this, but now that I‘ve heard your thoughts I‘m intrigued to see how I would feel about how it has aged. 2mo
julieclair 6️⃣ I‘m an introvert, so staying home would definitely be my choice. Cozy Christmas! 2mo
julieclair 7️⃣ I keep a gratitude journal and a one-line-a-day journal, although I haven‘t been consistent with either lately. I‘ve also started doing a collage journal, which I‘m really enjoying. 2mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig @julieclair Book aged so badly. Watched the movie after finishing. Movie was better. Still dated but better. 2mo

Crinoline_Laphroaig Jane Austen Ten Pound note had just been released when we were in UK. I had to go to several banks to find one. Lovely ladies at the Gretna branch of Royal Bank of Scotland found me one.

Thought I had lost her in the fire. When recovering things from ruins, niece sat with a stack water logged copies of Pride and Prejudice. She patiently pulled apart soggy pages until she found her. Once she dried out, she was fine just a bit singed. 💷

Crinoline_Laphroaig Found this edition a Library Book Sale for a quarter. It's been horribly Americanized. Changed the famous openly line: "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife." to "It is a fact everyone agrees that a young man with money should have a wife."? 3mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig And yet #PemberLittens why do I keep it? Because it was only a quarter. But also because it's just sooo badly done.😱

"My dear, Eliza, he must be in love with you, or he would never have called us in this familiar way." - Chapter 32

#Pemberlittens another from my collection. You could read this very simplified childrens edition in about 5 minute. I actually read my Kindle copy today. ?

LiteraryinPA I love the artwork in this series, with the felted characters! But I do find it a little weird with the single words on each page. If you were telling the story to a child, you‘d really have to shoulder that yourself. But maybe that‘s the point! 3mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig @LiteraryinLawrence some of the one words are self explanatory like Dance. But then you go from Walk to Marry. Definitely going to need so explanation. Muddy is my favorite picture. 3mo
Teresereading I loved it 3mo

"There is a stubbornness about me that never can bear to be frightened at the will of others. My courage always rises at every attempt to intimidate me." Chapter 31

#Pemberlittens I'm not actually reading Pride and Prejudice Manga for my Chapter A Day Readalong. I think it needs to be read on its own. But it's just so pretty it needed to be shared. ?

'In this quiet way, the first fortnight of her visit soon passed away." Chapter 30

#Pemberlittens after a big gardening project and two Birthday celebrations, it was lovely to spend Sunday puttering in my Library and organizing my collection.? ??

Pickpick

#Pemberlittens It's time for #JaneAdjacent Book Club!
SarahBookInterrupted @willaful @mctrish @LitsyEvents @Graciouswarriorprincess

1️⃣ New read. Print, Kindle, and Audiobook. When I picked this I was looking for an Austen retelling for Pride. I didn't realize it was Time Travel. Love that!👇

Crinoline_Laphroaig 2️⃣ Matthew - ‘Tears sting at my eyes as I pull him into a hug, grateful for this prim-and-proper guy who showed me that Prince Charming could have a bit of a wild side.

3️⃣ Runaway Bride on horseback.👇

3mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig 4️⃣ “I pray to Jane Austen herself for strength.”

“And there‘s no denying I feel kind of unexpectedly cool right now. Like I‘m Keira Knightley in a period drama, about to gaze forlornly out a window or cry a single tear in a bumpy carriage.”

“And I‘ll ruin the plot of every good book published for the next fifty years. Jane Austen? Louisa May Alcott? The Brontë sisters? Ruined. You‘ll curse my name until the day you die!”

Crinoline_Laphroaig 5️⃣ When I first heard Dutch Reach, my mind immediately went to @FictionalHangover discussion of a sex scene in the Dead to the World Episode. And everyone I asked immediately thought it was something kinky, not a safer way to open a car door. 😂

Crinoline_Laphroaig 6️⃣ Go to the Past and get Jane Austen to tell me what happened in the last unfinished novel, Sanditon. Or read all of Jane's letters before Cassandra burned them.

7️⃣ While it wouldn't be fun to have your opinions ignored, I'm going with Regency because even if you can say whatever you want it's High School. Doesn't mean it's going to be fun.

8️⃣ Artist. I would love to be able to sketch.

Crinoline_Laphroaig 9️⃣ Really made me think of how horrible a woman's life can be when she is at the mercy of men. Also with how terrible Lucy's father was, it was nice to see Audrey's family being so loving. I liked that it was never really explained how Time Travel worked. It just was.

julieclair I didn‘t get to this one this month 😕, but I still want to, so I will avoid the discussion to prevent spoilers. 😎 3mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig @julieclair no worries! I won't tag you in discussion post. Just pop back to it whenever you're ready. I completely understand. I've read less this month than I have in long time. 3mo

"Every park has its beauty and its prospects; and Elizabeth saw much to be pleased with...." Chapter 29

Pride and Prejudice Readalong has now featured all the copies in my Collection. I do also have children's editions and Manga but those need read through on their own. ?

I made a Reel for my Collection. Link to Instagram and our not often used #PemberLittens Facebook Group in comments.
