The Nature of Witches | Rachel Griffin
145 posts | 57 read | 61 to read
Practical Magic meets Twister in this debut contemporary fantasy standalone about heartbreaking power, the terror of our collapsing atmosphere, and the ways we unknowingly change our fate. For centuries, witches have maintained the climate, their power from the sun peaking in the season of their birth. But now their control is faltering as the atmosphere becomes more erratic. All hope lies with Clara, an Everwitch whose rare magic is tied to every season. In Autumn, Clara wants nothing to do with her power. It's wild and volatile, and the price of her magic--losing the ones she loves--is too high, despite the need to control the increasingly dangerous weather. In Winter, the world is on the precipice of disaster. Fires burn, storms rage, and Clara accepts that she's the only one who can make a difference. In Spring, she falls for Sang, the witch training her. As her magic grows, so do her feelings, until she's terrified Sang will be the next one she loses. In Summer, Clara must choose between her power and her happiness, her duty and the people she loves...before she loses Sang, her magic, and thrusts the world into chaos.

“But I like winter. Winter is the truest of all seasons. It‘s what remains after everything else is stripped away. The leaves fall. The colors fade. The branches get brittle. And if you can love the earth, understand it when all the beauty is gone and see it for what it is, that‘s magic.”

I love this book and the author writes beautifully!

I love the allegory of seasonal magic in this book! The way she linked specific magic to human qualities was awe-inspiring. It can make a reader release their sorrowful, desperate hold on every seasonal change. It was such a transformative story, and I can't wait to read her other books.

I burned out on YA tropes a few years ago and have avoided them as much as possible, so I was prepared to hate this book club pick before I even started. It has many of the things I dislike-a whiny, misunderstood teen protagonist, a sickly sweet romance, the savior who just wants to be normal, and sociopathic adults in positions of authority. But, I ended up enjoying the story and watching our heroine come into her own. Grumble, grumble. 😂

5feet.of.fury Same!!! “I just want to be normal” 🙄 😂 2y

Reading this magical realism book where witches are losing the battle in controlling climate disasters on a 91 degree day ..in Massachusetts ..in April *perfect*

I decided to start the month off with my #LMPBC pick for Group W. This was a fun read, but I felt mixed about it. I‘ve left the rest of my thoughts in the back of the book so the rest of the group can read this with fresh eyes. @5feet.of.fury I‘ll drop this in the mail next week. @suvata @DGRachel

Just like the last book I read, this had great worldbuilding but the rest didn‘t really work for me. I found the characters in this one frustrating and infuriating at times. (Sang is great though. A+++ love interest.) The plot also felt a little thin. I really think the information leading up to the critical revelation could have been fleshed out more.

Not a great start to my year or #AuldLangSpine reading! 😕 @MoonWitch94 @monalyisha

monalyisha @Clare-Dragonfly Fingers crossed for your next choice! 2y
MoonWitch94 TBH I totally understand where your coming from and don‘t entirely disagree. It had excellent potential to be a 5 star read for me, for all the reasons you listed, it wasn‘t. I still liked it enough to be a pick, though. What are you picking next? Also, you live in Philly/Philly area?!?! I think we are not very far part! 😀 2y
Clare-Dragonfly @MoonWitch94 I plan to try Beheld next! No, sadly, I‘m not in Philly anymore! I grew up there (and volunteered, then worked, at the library) and now live in Maryland. But Philly library cards don‘t expire so I have that one and my Maryland card both in Libby! I can have soooo many holds this way 😁 2y
MoonWitch94 @Clare-Dragonfly My favorite from my list is this one! It was my only 5 star read last year. If you don‘t get to it in January, you should at least put it on your TBR. 2y
Clare-Dragonfly @MoonWitch94 I probably won‘t get to it in January but I‘ll definitely be sure to read it this year! Thanks for telling me which is your top favorite! I am not sure I can pick one 😆 2y

I really enjoyed this witchy coming-of-age YA novel. Clara is an Everwitch, whose power is at maximum strength year round, unlike other witches who only have maximum power in their birth season. The downside of having this power is that her magic is difficult to control, and seeks to harm those whom she loves best. I enjoyed watching her try to learn how to master this power, while also dealing with self doubt and fear. ⬇️

julieclair The descriptions of how the witches used their magic, particularly in relation to the natural world, were enchanting. Great pick for October's #SundayBuddyRead , @TheBookHippie ! #Scarathlon #TeamSlaughter @Clwojick #Pointsathon @GHABI4ROSES @DieAReader #31by31 @catsandbooks 2y

Read for #SundayBuddyRead 🧙🏻‍♀️🪄✨Witchy YA book that addresses climate change in a unique way. Clara is a rare “Ever”-a witch who gets her power from all the seasons & that great power has caused her devastating loss, making her want to deplete herself of it. There‘s romance & angst & global weather issues & it‘s a good October read. Kindle tells me there were 799 #ScarathonWordSearch words, so an extra 7990 points for #TeamMonsterMash + ⬇️

Finishing this up tonight for tomorrows #SundayBuddyRead discussion and came across this #dusk quote.

“The sun gives up her place in the sky, and dusk settles over the vast field with a heathered shade of blue that makes everything feel peaceful. “

Not particularly ominous but beautiful and evocative.

I really enjoyed this book. At times it could be a little too ya. The magic system was cool. Each witch has a designated season which they are strongest in controlling except Clara, she is an Everwitch & has power through all four seasons but she can't control it. So enjoyed this YA novel that combines the forces of nature & the power of magic. Witches are trying to get the attention of shaders(non witch humans)in hopes of making them see the dire consequences of climate change. Shaders need to change their ways & work with the witches to,if possible, reverse some of climate change‘s present & future effects. Our group discusses this tomorrow. #sundaybuddyread #outstandingoctober #20in4 #litsylovereads
