#throwback to a few weeks ago, when I was on vacation and started this one. Finally finished it today and glad to be done with it. Pretty disappointing. A good premise, but I had a ton of issues with the execution.

Hooked_on_books This one has sat on my shelves for years unread, in part because of mixed reviews. When I finally give it a go, I‘m going to be more willing to bail than I might otherwise if it isn‘t working. 4d

I thought this was great! It made me laugh a lot, but I also cried a few times. And even though it did that thing I hate of constantly referring to Something in the Past for ages before explaining it and at one point I actually said aloud to an empty room, "Please go get some therapy," I think I loved it?

I purposely didn't read this until the paperback came out, because I knew I'd want to own it. A bit slow going for me, but I ultimately really liked this #PersephoneClub selection.

Whipple has created some wonderful, fully-rounded characters, many of whom aren't particularly sympathetic for lots of the book. The plot seems entirely plausible to me and it's a fascinating and insightful insider sort of look into the rise (and fall) of a “grasping“ family*.

I'd love an entire book about Carrie, please!

quietjenn *it might not be fair to characterize them all as grasping, as it's mostly Thomas and Freda. But, everyone else is pretty complacent and willing to go along and Whipple is all about shared responsibility. 6mo

p.s. having tons of trouble tagging today, so will try to add them later

quietjenn Some things I loved: the premise and initial move to Scotland, the cottage, Jane's work, her adventures with Margaret. Some things I didn't: that no one ever called Helen on her behavior, Anna's disengagement once they get to Scotland, a romance that was lukewarm (at best).

A typical Susan Scarlett book - complete with an early meet-cute, a sweet romance, and a cheery, lovable heroine - mashed up with a domestic thriller - complete with sinister off-hand comments, a disturbing child, heaps of tension, and murder. It is rather incongruous, but somehow works. As is usually the case with Scarlett, you know all the bits from the beginning, but there's pleasure in how exactly it all plays out.
