A wedding celebration turns dark and deadly in this deliciously wicked and atmospheric thriller reminiscent of Agatha Christie from the author of The Hunting Party. The bride ? The plus one ? The best man ? The wedding planner ? The bridesmaid ? The body On an island off the coast of Ireland, guests gather to celebrate two people joining their lives together as one. The groom: handsome and charming, a rising television star. The bride: smart and ambitious, a magazine publisher. It's a wedding for a magazine, or for a celebrity: the designer dress, the remote location, the luxe party favors, the boutique whiskey. The cell phone service may be spotty and the waves may be rough, but every detail has been expertly planned and will be expertly executed. But perfection is for plans, and people are all too human. As the champagne is popped and the festivities begin, resentments and petty jealousies begin to mingle with the reminiscences and well wishes. The groomsmen begin the drinking game from their school days. The bridesmaid not-so-accidentally ruins her dress. The bride's oldest (male) friend gives an uncomfortably caring toast. And then someone turns up dead. Who didn't wish the happy couple well? And perhaps more important, why?

Started this one! I bet it's a great thriller but I'm not sure I'm in the mood of it right now...

Maybe because I recently finished And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie and I didn't fully realize this story is based on the classic.

I may put this on the back-burner for a bit and start a new physical read.

Enjoyed this one! Thrillers aren‘t my absolute favorite genre since I feel like they‘re over the top sometimes but this one was good. Well paced, interesting characters and twists I didn‘t see coming.

#10 #Audio 4✨

Wish I read this before Paris Apartment!! Constant game of cat & mouse with the reader on who the victim & culprit are. Multiple POV, creepy atmosphere, characters have depth without over/underwhelming. Fun murder mystery on an island with recognizable characters completely trapped. Really enjoyed this one especially on audio.

Brings me to 2 bingos! Will post my final bingo board in a few.

A bit of white wine and a thriller while on holiday.

Let‘s see how this one goes; I seem to enjoy a lot of current thrillers until I get to the ending. Anyone else? 🤷🏻‍♀️

batsy Yes! The endings tend to ruin what was a perfectly good book. 4mo
sarahbarnes Sounds like a great holiday! 4mo
tpixie @batsy @LeahBergen I agrée! I do recall Stephen King, saying the ending is always the hardest part of the book! 4mo

TheLudicReader Yep. So much promise until the end and then it all falls apart. 🙁 4mo
Cathythoughts Yes ! Or I enjoy the first half and the author loses me. 🤷‍♀️ 4mo
LitStephanie Yeah, I love thrillers, but sometimes the endings are this huge complex mess being crammed into a quick wrapup, and I am left thinking "Wait, what? What about x, y, and z." Enjoy your holiday! 4mo
vivastory Don't get me started on the problem with the endings of contemporary thrillers *sigh* 4mo
LeahBergen @batsy And yet I don‘t usually find that to be the case with a lot of vintage thrillers. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 4mo
LeahBergen @sarahbarnes It was. Thank you! 4mo
LeahBergen @tpixie It must be! 4mo
LeahBergen @TheLudicReader It‘s like they try to hard for “the twist”. 4mo
LeahBergen @Cathythoughts Yes! About 80% of the time. It‘s probably why I enjoy vintage psychological suspense so much more. They don‘t seem to try so hard for the big twisty finish. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 4mo
LeahBergen @LitStephanie That‘s exactly it! 4mo
LeahBergen @vivastory Right? What‘s wrong with a quietly malevolent ending? 😆 4mo
Cathythoughts Great discussion! I really wish the modern thriller writers could see this thread 👍🏻 4mo

mavey @5feet.of.fury Yes! It was good! Have you tried any of Foley's other books? Any recommendations?😊 5mo
5feet.of.fury @mavey I read this one and the Hunting Party so far, loved them both. Heard great things about The Paris Apartment but I haven‘t gotten to it yet 5mo

I read this b/c of the Agatha Christie comparisons, which is silly because I don‘t think I‘ve ever read an AC book. The victim isn‘t revealed until the end, but I kept thinking I spaced some portion. I often feel like I‘m reading great books, but don‘t know it.

Holy Beep! This book was a ride! It started off slow for me and I had to push through for a bit, but oh my stars am I glad that I did! I love the authors style of writing of you now knowing the killer or victim until the end, it makes the guessing so much more exciting. In fact I think with my reaction to the ending I have convince members of my family they need to read her books. Highly recommend!

My first Lucy foley did not disappoint. Devoured this one quickly and loved it. The characters weren‘t exactly likeable but boy did it keep me guessing right till the end. So satisfying. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Another hugely entertaining and moreish mystery novel from up-and-coming crime author, Lucy Foley.

They aren't top quality literature, but they are readable, fast-paced and full of twists.

Remote, eerie location, some thoroughly HORRIBLE characters and a satisfyingly dramatic ending.

This was a fun “closed room” thriller about a wedding on a secluded island that seems perfect but there are many cracks in the veneer. I wasn‘t sure I was going to stick with this one because it is full of unlikeable characters, but it has some great twists and a highly satisfying end. 4⭐️

A sort-of locked room mystery where the characters weren't likable. Some were even assholes (talking to you, men-who-still-behave-like-demented schoolboys). The constant chapter switching got to be a bit annoying as well; some chapters were only 1-2 paragraphs! One had to suspend her disbelief as well, especially the link between the victim and several wedding party guests. Still a fun read, but it didn't leave me feeling satisfied at the end.

It' was good at times like the setting are devilish characters. But the book was too long..... Like... Get to the point!! I think this book would of been so much better if it were shorter. It took me all summer to read because.... I didn't really care what happened... But I kinda wanted to know??

DrexEdit It takes me a long time to decide to DNF a book like that. I usually end up finishing them, like you did. 9mo
dabbe I totally agree! I didn't like any of the characters either! I still had to read it, though, because it was fast-paced (plus, I kept hoping things would change). 7mo

Really enjoyed this audiobook! Loved all the different narrators (and their various accents, even the smarmy posh Brit a-hole one). I also didn‘t guess the ending, which is always nice. Lucy Foley is pretty reliable after this and Paris Apartment - this isn‘t my favorite genre but I‘m a fan!

3.75/5 - second time reading it
Quite entertaining, you want to know who did it, what happened, etc.
Are the characters likeable? Most of them are not. Are they superficial? Several definitely are.
It's a well constructed book. I liked the gothic atmosphere with the island seeming so alive, being a character in itself.
Great book to unwind and relax

There is so much to say about this book! It‘s captivating in a creepy yet mysterious way. I love the way it can gather everyone‘s lives from their eyes and draw you into the emotions of each character. It‘s an extremely good book with twist and turns that make you almost addicted to the world it creates. Definitely a must read if you have not!

Unabridged Audiobook (4/10):
There are awesome revelations throughout this book, but I didn‘t need 7 of the 10 hours of this book to simply be buildup for those revelations. There‘s awesome descriptions of different mental health issues and some are easy to connect with (looking at you Johnno and Olivia).

I genuinely don‘t think I would recommend this novel, but I think it might make a pretty decent hour and half film.

Mandycolesings Agreed. This book needed 150 pages gone.... Time waster. 9mo

I started listening to this book on Friday and couldn‘t stop. I listen whenever I could. At first I thought it was taking place in the 1950s but nope it‘s the 2000s. It‘s a thriller so I think that was a plus to keeping my interest.

It took forever to get to the point, but the last third of this book just about swallowed me whole. Character development was superb. I also hate the cover that is too small for the book-leaving that silly little slab of the second page sticking out, like your ankles poking out of a pair of long johns you found in the drawer from 7th grade. Still 8/10

My book club picked the tag, which I read last year. So I did a puzzle while listening to the audiobook for a quick refresher.

Still a very well paced book that perfectly balances motives to keep you guessing both the victim and murderer up until the end.

And the drama! I know all these characters are adults but they act like horny, emotional teenagers with adult problems! Better than a soap opera, lol. Everyone‘s got skeletons 💀
