A wedding celebration turns dark and deadly in this deliciously wicked and atmospheric thriller reminiscent of Agatha Christie from the author of The Hunting Party. The bride ? The plus one ? The best man ? The wedding planner ? The bridesmaid ? The body On an island off the coast of Ireland, guests gather to celebrate two people joining their lives together as one. The groom: handsome and charming, a rising television star. The bride: smart and ambitious, a magazine publisher. It's a wedding for a magazine, or for a celebrity: the designer dress, the remote location, the luxe party favors, the boutique whiskey. The cell phone service may be spotty and the waves may be rough, but every detail has been expertly planned and will be expertly executed. But perfection is for plans, and people are all too human. As the champagne is popped and the festivities begin, resentments and petty jealousies begin to mingle with the reminiscences and well wishes. The groomsmen begin the drinking game from their school days. The bridesmaid not-so-accidentally ruins her dress. The bride's oldest (male) friend gives an uncomfortably caring toast. And then someone turns up dead. Who didn't wish the happy couple well? And perhaps more important, why?

I was on the edge of my seat until the very end! So many twists. I found myself empathising and caring for the characters, while also in the back of my mind thinking “but did YOU do it!?“ It was definitely entertaining and kept me coming back for more.

Unabridged Audiobook (4/10):
There are awesome revelations throughout this book, but I didn‘t need 7 of the 10 hours of this book to simply be buildup for those revelations. There‘s awesome descriptions of different mental health issues and some are easy to connect with (looking at you Johnno and Olivia).

I genuinely don‘t think I would recommend this novel, but I think it might make a pretty decent hour and half film.

I started listening to this book on Friday and couldn‘t stop. I listen whenever I could. At first I thought it was taking place in the 1950s but nope it‘s the 2000s. It‘s a thriller so I think that was a plus to keeping my interest.

It took forever to get to the point, but the last third of this book just about swallowed me whole. Character development was superb. I also hate the cover that is too small for the book-leaving that silly little slab of the second page sticking out, like your ankles poking out of a pair of long johns you found in the drawer from 7th grade. Still 8/10

My book club picked the tag, which I read last year. So I did a puzzle while listening to the audiobook for a quick refresher.

Still a very well paced book that perfectly balances motives to keep you guessing both the victim and murderer up until the end.

And the drama! I know all these characters are adults but they act like horny, emotional teenagers with adult problems! Better than a soap opera, lol. Everyone‘s got skeletons 💀

Ohhhh man this one was good fun. If you‘re weird like me and consider a weekend murder read “fun” (yep I do, I truly do), this won‘t disappoint. You want to hate so many characters in the book - rich, spoiled, annoying, but find comfort because you won‘t be alone. Many characters in the book are right there hating‘ on each other. You just have to unearth the “why?” Happy digging. ScrappyMags.com for full review

Cortg Would this fit the challenge “a book about a secret?” I added it to my #pop22 challenge? It sounds like a fun read! 4mo

All have a secret. All have a motive. Only one is a murderer.

I pretty much devoured this in one sitting. It‘s fast-paced with the POV changes, but I didn‘t have any trouble remembering who‘s who. I don‘t think I liked any of the characters, except maybe Olivia, but that was probably the point. I can‘t wait for Lucy‘s new release this year!

I had about a million predictions which kept changing as I was reading as to how everything was going to play out in the end. For the most part, all of my predictions were completely wrong. I was able to guess one major twist pretty early on but other than that, I was completely shocked by all of the twists and turns! So, so good! The only thing that bothered me was how conveniently the characters were connected to the groom.

This was a fun thriller - a wedding on a remote island. A storm that cuts everyone off from the mainland. A guest list full of people with dark secrets. It‘s literally a recipe for murder. I don‘t think there was a single character I liked, but that was completely okay. I had my suspicions about how it would end, but I have to admit while I guessed he who, I missed all the whys. A great first book from @katiekat311 #NYWD22 list!

I really enjoyed this #newyearwhodis pick! The story is set around a wedding, which I am a sucker for. 😁 Jules and her semi-famous husband get married on a remote, secluded island.. What could possibly go wrong? 😅 I was intrigued the whole way through. I do wish a few of the storylines would have been tied up, I felt like we were left hanging a bit but still great! What a great list 😍 📚 @thegreensofa @monalyisha

monalyisha When I‘m at the Library, this book cover stops me dead every time I see it. Mostly because it‘s foreboding AND my maiden name is Foley. 😅 But still. Hooray for another win! 🎉 5mo
michellelav @monalyisha it's pretty good depending on what type of genre you read! 😁 5mo
thegreensofa I‘m so happy you enjoyed it too. I could imagine the whole thing taking place, it‘s written so visually. Just like being at the wedding in the background, and wondering what the hell was going on!! 👀 5mo

5/10
I personally don‘t enjoy slow burn books, especially ones that last about 75% of the books entirety. I can appreciate the plot and characters, but was mostly disappointed with the ending as it seemed more outlandish. It has that shock factor at the end, but I feel like by the time I got to it I was just ready to be done with the book and couldn‘t fully appreciate it.

Jennaree3 I'm halfway and it is taking me so. Long. To. Finish. But Reese Witherspoon liked it so it must be a literary masterpiece 2mo

I love books where the location is almost a character in itself, and it lent this book a truly atmospheric suspense. I loved how all the seemingly unrelated aspects of the book were in fact related, in shocking and surprising ways. The ending chapters were a rollercoaster of surprises, and I raced through them. 5* thriller

3/5 -- Foley kept me guessing about who the killer was until the end. I liked how everything ultimately unraveled. I enjoyed some of the characters and the audio production was good. I liked that it was set in the Aran Islands. It was slow for me, though. I admire Foley's ability to create anticipation for the reader but it was overdone. I'm a little disappointed!

Ottergirl I liked the story too, and the way you weren‘t quite sure but found the rest of the characters had unresolved stories at the end. That‘s what I found disappointing….. I‘d guessed that Aifoe was Loner‘s sister and that Freddie was his friend, but not that Jonno‘s whiskey business was a dud or that Hannah‘s sister‘s ex was Will. Lots of twists for some people I think but little resolution 7mo
sleepy.ash87 @Ottergirl I hadn't any idea about Aifoe being Loner's sister until the end! I did suspect Jonno's business wasn't real and guessed that Will was Hannah's sister's ex once I heard her story of what happened with the photos... They all had reasons to hate Will. I wish Jonno hadn't been blamed for the killing, though! I also wish more had been resolved around Hannah and Charlie's marriage. 7mo
Ottergirl @sleepy.ash87 I think i agree about blaming Jonno being a bit of a cop out…. And some of the characters were a bit unnecessary- the bride‘s mother didn‘t seem to have a role in the story after the dinner the night before. All in all it felt a bit like a school essay type ending. She‘s good at building a great story though. I‘ve read The Hunting Party and thought it was a good read too. 7mo

I finished this Symphyotrichum walteri (Walter's Aster), a September wildflower of North Carolina, while continuing to listen to The Guest List. This novel has been interesting enough, I guess? It has been a little slow... I still like that it is set in the Aran Islands. I'm going to stick with it and see how I feel in the end...

I started The Guest List.. I wasn't excited about this read at first because it felt like an odd follow after Hamnet, but I was won over upon hearing the descriptions of Inis an Amplora, a fictional location inspired by the Aran Islands. I spent a week in Inishmaan while in college, and the book has very well described the landscape and it's ghostly feel. As included in the book, the boat ride to the islands is *very* choppy. We were all sick!

This is in the same vein as The Hunting Party. The body is discovered early on, but we don‘t know who died and who the murderer was. Told from different perspectives, alternating between present day & the day before the extravagant wedding, backstories, and dark secrets are revealed as the story unfolds… and many with a motive! Overall a fun book to get lost in.

Set on a remote island in Ireland during a few days for the much anticipated wedding of Jules and Will, this book tries to keep the reader guessing who died and who did it. Perhaps most disappointing is the superfluous dialogue steeped in toxic masculinity. This book is like “vegan bacon.” Don‘t get it if you‘re looking for something savory and satisfying because all you‘re getting is a steamed carrot with some paprika. 🛑: toxic masculinity
