Anyone else find themselves excessively browsing their own libraries? So instead of thinking about what actual book you own that you'd like to read, you just come up with a list of criteria and endlessly browse and re-browse your own library, waiting for a book that meets said criteria to suddenly materialize ... or is that just me? 😅 #moodreader

Here's a conundrum. Late last night and half asleep, I was half-heartedly reading a book for the book club I moderate. There was a sex scene. I thought nothing of it. Later, it seems to be revealed that the male party in the sex scene is actually a 10 yr-old boy... which means I've been tricked into reading what was actually a child rape scene! 🤬 I'm livid and want to bail. Is it okay to bail on your own book club?!

rabbitprincess Yes, definitely bail! 3w
Hooked_on_books Given the circumstance, yes. And if you‘re far enough out from book club, you could even contact everyone and change up the book. I‘m sure there are people who will be glad to not have to read that scene. 3w
See All 11 Comments
Soubhiville I‘d agree with @Hooked_on_books , let your club members know and suggest a change. Or if they choose to stick with the book, sit this month out or go without reading it. My bookclub usually has one or more members who didn‘t read or didn‘t finish the book who still come to the meeting to listen to the discussion. Sometimes talking about why you DNF can be one of the more interesting conversations. 3w
ShyBookOwl @Soubhiville @Hooked_on_books I appreciate hearing this! Thank you. I have set up a vote for the club to choose to power through or switch to the book that got the 2nd most votes when we chose this one. Either way, I've officially bailed and feel much better! 3w
Hooked_on_books Sounds like you‘re on a great path! And the fact that you feel better shows how important bailing was. 3w

I like this exchange. It's so simple, but touches on something so big. This idea of the femme fatale, or how female beauty is itself dangerous. An idea that has been used as a way to repress and oppress women since... always! Her response, so simple and nonchalant, but so perfect. Superpowers aside, this feels like a bigger statement Schwab is making.

This one had a great cold opening that hooked me right away, and I couldn't put it down for the last 15%... but everything in between really dragged for me. I almost bailed many times, but was just a little too curious to see if my theory about the killer's identity was right. I was close! Satisfying climax, but annoying characters and a slightly triggering pandemic backdrop made it difficult for me to get through.

A fun thriller with two intertwining storylines across two timeliness (and two murders). In the 70s, we have a group of rock stars and artists in the villa, and in the present, we have two writers seeking inspiration in the villa. While I found the present storyline a little unsatisfying overall, the past storyline carried the book for me, with interesting characters, good suspense, and a great surprise ending!
