I'd Rather Be Reading: The Delights and Dilemmas of the Reading Life
I'd Rather Be Reading: The Delights and Dilemmas of the Reading Life | Anne Bogel
For so many people, reading isn't just a hobby or a way to pass the time--it's a lifestyle. Our books shape us, define us, enchant us, and even sometimes infuriate us. Our books are a part of who we are as people, and we can't imagine life without them. I'd Rather Be Reading is the perfect literary companion for everyone who feels that way. In this collection of charming and relatable reflections on the reading life, beloved blogger and author Anne Bogel leads readers to remember the book that first hooked them, the place where they first fell in love with reading, and all of the moments afterward that helped make them the reader they are today. Known as a reading tastemaker through her popular podcast What Should I Read Next?, Bogel invites book lovers into a community of like-minded people to discover new ways to approach literature, learn fascinating new things about books and publishing, and reflect on the role reading plays in their lives. The perfect gift for the bibliophile in everyone's life, I'd Rather Be Reading will command an honored place on the overstuffed bookshelves of any book lover.

Good. Nice short book about what it means to be a reader and our little quirks. Shows that we are all different in how we read and shouldn't be ashamed to not have read classics that you should just enjoy what it means to you.

Picking up the new Philip Pullman tomorrow as it‘s the first chance I‘ve had to get to town! Wanted something to last tonight and bus commute in the morning, but read with a cup of tea!
Nice easy reflection on being a reader. Loved the chapter on bookworm problems, probably things we could all relate to!
Now I still need something for my commute. Poetry here we come.

Serious readers will recognize a lot of what Bogel discusses in this brief book of short essays about reading. For a while, Bogel lived next door to a public library and, while she was already a reader, this experience shaped her profoundly. She discusses bonding over books, the joys and lessons of keeping a reader journal, and the powerful role books play in people's lives.

Absolutely loved it 😍📚. I‘m a sucker for books about the reading life and Anne did not disappoint! I read this in just a couple hours this afternoon, and actually like it better than Ex Libris: Confessions of a common reader. This one just spoke to me more. FYI if you aren‘t listening to Anne‘s podcast What Should I Read Next you should 😊. It‘s fantastic. I borrowed this from the library but will be getting my own copy ASAP

CogsOfEncouragement I have never set a goal, but I am always happy to be able to see how many books/pages I read and compare it to other years. I love that about goodreads. 6mo
Suelizbeth That was an interesting article. I have set a goal 3 years in a row. The first year, I exceeded my goal, so I increased it the second year and met it, but this year, I'm far behind, but I don't seem to care. I was in a bit of a reading slump, so I fell behind right away, but I'm not sure I'll try very hard to catch up. I am reading more intentionally so I'm reading more slowly and actually listening to more audiobooks and podcasts. 6mo
Sace @CogsOfEncouragement I am the complete opposite. I did the challenge and most years met the goal, but comparing year to year was taking joy out of my reading. I kept trying to outdo myself. 🤣 6mo
See All 12 Comments
Sace @Suelizbeth "reading more intentially" Love this. I found myself focusing more on quantity and not quality reads so I'm trying to be a better reader even if it makes me a less prolific reader. 6mo
booksandsympathy I find I'm not good at challenges. I actually made my Goodreads challenge smaller this year than I ever have before. I tried to do the whole, "read a book by a woman under 30, read a book that takes place in Africa, etc...." kind of challenge and it was an epic fail. I read according to mood, so that didn't work at all. 6mo
wideeyedreader I like to do the Goodreads challenge not because I need encouragement to read—but because I like to see how much reading I can do in a year. For me, it‘s less of a push to read more and more of a neat look at my reading, and how my life effects it. 6mo
Sace @booksandsympathy I read according to mood as well. I look at those category challenges as a life long project. I just keep a bunch of lists in my book journal and when I feel lost as to what to read I look at them for inspiration. 6mo
Sace @wideeyedreader i don't really need the encouragement and the focus on quantity ended up stifling some of the joy for me. I don't think I need any data beyond what I read and when I finished. I wasn't using goodreads in a way that was good for me. Paper and pencil seems to have gotten me back to reading again 😁 6mo
Sace @CogsOfEncouragement I'm glad. It's a popular challenge, it's just not for me. 6mo
wideeyedreader @RestlessFickleBookHoarder That‘s a good way to do it! Everyone likes different things, lol 6mo
DGRachel I found I had this demotivation problem with things like the Book Riot and Pop Sugar challenges, but not with Goodreads. I like setting an overall goal, but I also try to make it reasonable. The one challenge I‘ll probably give up next year is MountTBR, because failing that one crushes my spirit, which destroys the joy of reading. 6mo

I enjoy Bogel‘s podcast, “What Should I Read Next?”
This is a collection of short essays on Bogel‘s reading life. Most of what is covered in the book Bogel has talked about on her podcast, so nothing much new here. Still, reading this collection was a pleasant enough way to spend a relaxing hour or two after a stressful day at work.

Such a wonderful book about reading, reading habits and about being a bookworm. Divided in 16 chapters Anne Bogel talks about different parts of a bookworm's life. There are several chapters you smile the whole time while you read them, just because you are quite like that. A cosy book for everyone who loves to read and who is proud to be a reader. 😍 @rubyslippersreads thank you for sending me this book. 😍

Anne Bogel (of What Should I Read Next? podcast) narrates her own work in this short, uplifting collection of thoughts about our reading lives. Littens will identify with much, if not all, that she has to say. I especially enjoyed the chapter about reading author acknowledgements. I was sad, however, to learn that Bogel feels the need to apologize for reading some kinds of books, as when mentioning Drowning Ruth: “Confession: Oprah pick.”

I feel a bit stupid for not knowing that it was William Morris who is famous for saying “Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.” I thought that was Marie Kondo‘s original idea. In her book, Anne Bogel encourages people to keep books they‘ll never read as long as they find the covers beautiful—not at all in line with the KonMari method.
(Internet image)

AnneCecilie I haven‘t read the KonMari book, but I would definitely argue that a book with beautiful cover sparks joy. I know that a beautiful cover makes me happy 😊 6mo

DH was shocked to get home from last night's hockey game at nearly 1 am this morning to find me still working on my jigsaw puzzle and reading with my ears [and I didn't stop until well after he went to bed]. Before he left for tonight's game, he asked "What are you doing tonight?" I just held up my book. Follow-up question (with judgy tone): "Until what time?" Hey—I'm already in bed! That's promising, right? ?
