Alone on a desert island everything and everyone he knows and loves has been washed away in a storm Mau is the last surviving member of his nation. He s completely alone or so he thinks until he finds the ghost girl. She has no toes, wears strange lacy trousers like the grandfather bird, and gives him a stick that can make fire.Daphne, sole survivor of the wreck of the Sweet Judy, almost immediately regrets trying to shoot the native boy. Thank goodness the powder was wet and the gun only produced a spark. She s certain her father, distant cousin of the Royal family, will come and rescue her but it seems, for now, that all she has for company is the boy and the foul-mouthed ship s parrot, until other survivors arrive to take refuge on the island. Together, Mau and Daphne discover some remarkable things (including how to milk a pig, and why spitting in beer is a good thing), and start to forge a new nation. Encompassing themes of death and nationhood, Terry Pratchett s new novel is, as can be expected, extremely funny, witty and wise. Mau s ancestors have something to teach us all. Mau just wishes they would shut up about it and let him get on with saving everyone s lives!"

Third book Finished in December.

This was a very enjoyable audiobook read by Tony Robinson. A good story with interesting themes developed through it, but was disappointed to find it was an abridged version. This should be more transparent - don‘t understand why books are abridged! #AuthorAMonth @Soubhiville

A good standalone book.

#ReadAway2024 @DieAReader @Ghabi4Roses

AnnCrystal Never liked abridged, they should define that on the about page! Or stamp the front. (edited) 3w
Ruthiella The only book I‘ve thought could have easily been better if abridged was Les Miserables…the Waterloo chapter was almost my Waterloo for reading the book! 😅 3w

Started a new audiobook, Nation by Terry Pratchett, for #AuthoraMonth. This one is read by Tony Robinson (of Blackadder fame) - a cunning plan!

Look forward to listening to this and not really sure what to expect. Wasn‘t on my #20in4 plan, but I am ahead of schedule.

🎧 Loved this story. You‘ll laugh & cry. Listen to the author‘s note at the end for author insight.

A terrible storm kills everyone on the Island Nation except one young boy. The same storm shipwrecks a young girl in line for the throne. The boy saves the girl. They live on the deserted desert island accepting a steady stream of others who were also displaced by the storm.

The story will mean as little or as much as you give to it.

My first #auldLangSpine read from@barbarajean For some reason I wasn‘t expecting the humor, but I liked it! It was a fun read! Reminded me of the style of My Lady Jane by Jodi Meadows. Also my #doublespin book for #bookspin

Two coming of age stories set with the backdrop of an unimaginable loss, restoration after a natural disaster, a condemnation of colonialism, & a reconciliation of faith and science.

I liked this a lot. We get distinct & amazing characters I loved. A slow plot, but interesting world building. But the epilogue? I am not ashamed to say the epilogue brought me to tears. What better things are we capable of building after such loss? 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

DrexEdit I read this book in 2008 and don't remember much about it at all, except I did apparently enjoy it (4 ⭐ on goodreads). 3y
khooliha I love this book, it's one of my signed Pratchetts, but I read it at the start of the pandemic and I know I couldn't read it again right now - my current headspace is too cynical and sad to be open to the message of loss. I do love it, though. I look forward to the day I can read it again. 3y

Bailedbailed

There were plot passages I found interesting but in the end I needed to bail. From the moment the “enemies” entered the story instantly fell boring for me. I just couldn‘t bring myself to read the last 100 pages to finish this.

I skipped large parts and read the last few pages of the last chapter. And I did take nothing out of either the ending nor the plot.

I liked some philosophical bits, yes, but that doesn‘t carry the whole book.

I started this last Sunday and after 65 pages I was reluctant to pick it back up because I felt the plot wasn‘t really moving. You know, I had understood quite well that Mau‘s world has drowned but wasn‘t too keen on observing everything he does after returning “home”.

I moved on 70 more pages today (👏🏼) and it seems, finally a story I might like evolves.

I gave this one 85 pages to hook me, and it was amusing in places but at 85 pages it still felt like I was forcing myself to pick it up instead of enjoying it. I‘m a little bummed because it seems to be well-loved, but I guess it‘s just not my cup of tea. That‘s one book down for the #bookspinbonanza #bookspin

TheAromaofBooks I've heard a lot of good things about Prachett but haven't read any of his books yet myself. Sorry this one didn't work for you!! 5y
Dilara This one is my least favourite Pratchett. He wasn't at the height of his powers when he wrote it, I don't think... Still, there are plenty of other, better, Pratchetts 😋 out there. 5y

I‘m not sure what it is with #bookspin and hardcovers, but I always seem to end up reading big, have hardcovers from my TBR. The upshot is that reading big heavy hardcovers frees up more space on my shelves for....more books! Anyhow, Nation is the first read of my May #bookspinbonanza so gotta finish up My Dark Vanessa today and get down to business! 😀📚

I loved the way this book flowed. It shows the lives of the characters before and after a natural disasters, and the slow process of trying to see past your own culture to understand someone else's perspective. It's packed full of delightful humor as well. #diversity #colonialism #culturalappropriation #survival

This falls between Pick and So-So for me, so I'm erring on the side of generosity as Sir Terry has entertained me mightily in the past. I guess I was in the mood for something more silly and funny, in keeping with Pratchett's other books I've read.

When your coming-of-age is interrupted by a tsunami, do you try to rebuild the life you had, or something better? Pratchett's satire skewers colonialism, religion (but not belief that is flexible enough to accommodate evidence), cricket, and much more.

Hooray! I have officially lost my Terry Pratchett virginity. And I‘m thinking this book was really not the right one to start with! Such mixed feelings. While I adored the concept and the deep philosophical messages, something about it felt unpolished to me. I had trouble getting into it and much of the book failed to grasp my attention. ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

I put in a library request for a proper DiscWorld book, so I‘ll see if that‘s more to my liking!

My one and only reading goal this year was to read a book by Terry Pratchett. As a lifelong fantasy geek, it‘s inexcusable that I‘ve never read anything by Pratchett (except for Good Omens, which only half counts). I have failed to do this, but I still have a few days left! I figured my Pratchett intro would be Discworld, but my library doesn‘t have any of the starter books, so I went with this one. No idea what it‘s about or what to expect!

A day late for #setonanisland - this is the first book that came to mind for the category. This was a fantastic book- rich in questions about religion and faith (as well as ideas on colonization) explored through two very different protagonists: a South Pacific Islander- sole survivor of a wave that wiped out the other inhabitants of his home island, and a young British girl, shipwrecked on the island by the same storm. #seasonsreadings2016
