During the month of October, openers and closers clash together. The openers wish to open the gate to the Elder Gods, while the close try to keep the gate shut. The tale is told by Snuff, guard dog to Jack the Ripper. The book is a lot of fun and includes illustrations.

Another book from my #31DaysOfHorror marathon in October I‘m late on posting. I enjoy reading this every year, reading a chapter a day (even though this is a fairly short book). I generally like books that use classic characters (Dracula, Sherlock Holmes, etc), and they are so well done here. The new characters (the animal companions) though are the real stars here. The world is enchanting and puts me in the Halloween spirit every time.

This was interesting…it reads like a Victorian murder mystery with tons of creatures and horror icons. It‘s witty and unique enough to hold my interest. However, it has the limitations of many old mysteries in lacking character depth. So I was pretty indifferent once they started disappearing. The one character I absolutely loved was the “experiment man.” The entire book builds to the big ritual battle which has a nice twist to finish things off.

This book follows the adventures of Snuff the dog and his master over each night of October as they compete against others to be the first ones to complete a supernatural ritual. I don‘t know, the plot looks a bit murky, but this is supposedly a fun Halloween read! I was supposed to read it as part of a group read last year and didn‘t stick with it. So here‘s to reading it this year.

I still find this book entertaining and reread it in October sometimes. Basically a bunch of horror archetypes and their animal familiars are scrambling to complete a ritual before the others. The story is told from the viewpoint of Jack's dog. Hilarity and spookiness ensues.

This is an entertaining and some times confusing (because of the number of characters) story about a dog named Snuff and the crazy supernatural game him and his master are preparing for 🎃

I ended up liking this book okay. I had to refresh my memory of some of spooky literature in order to get some of the references. If you are not familiar with Lovecraft, some of it won't make sense. But it was humorous, narrated by a dog, and my money was always on the cat.

4th book read for #OutstandingOctober @Andrew65

#LonesomeOct

Also, the book was written in 1993 and refers to Romani people as Gipsies. No other apparent disparagements.

MidnightBookGirl October 4th starts off with Snuff doing his rounds, and I have to say, I find the Things trapped in the house to be pretty funny. Also Snuff spies a newly joined player and his pet squirrel, Cheeter. Openers and Closers are mentioned again, and Jack captures starlight. Not sure what to make of the wolf howl (or dog howl?) of the word lost and the way it makes Snuff react. 3y

MidnightBookGirl Chapter 3, where Snuff is a good doggie. Jack continues to collect ingredients for some mysterious purpose, and they are chased- by competitors? Also, Snuff meets Needle the bat, who belongs to the Count (I assume Dracula, because why not). It's also the first time openers and closers are mentioned. It's been too long since I read this book and I totally don't remember the ending, so it's all only vaguely familiar, lol. 3y

MidnightBookGirl Chapter 2 is short and sweet, but we meet Graymalk, cat to Jill (crazy Jill who lives over the hill). Snuff and Graymalk each give the other some important information about who else has been skulking about (and setting deadly traps for the other). A few other players and their consorts are mentioned- Nightwind, an owl, belongs to Morris and MacCab, and Quicklime, a black snake who “lives in the belly“ of the mad monk Rastov . ⬇ 3y
MidnightBookGirl And I can't help but think of Rasputin, right? 3y

MidnightBookGirl I read the intro and chapter one- October 1st, in which we get to meet Snuff, a most dedicated watchdog to his master Jack, who keeps Things trapped in every day items. Mirrors, wardrobes, etc. I really love the vibe of this book, the creepiness of hanging out in the cemetery whilst Jack digs up graves. Can't wait for more, although it will be hard to limit it to just a chapter a day! 3y
Eggbeater I like the loyal graveyard dog. I wonder what exactly the Things are. 3y

A quick fun read, that you can flip though in a day or read it one chapter per day, every day of October. I would say the first half of the book is just about discovering the plot, what is actually going on and what is going to happen at midnight of the last day of October. The plot is difficult to describe without giving anything away, it is mysterious and I loved putting all the pieces together.

Putting Dracula, Frankenstein, the Wolf Man and Sherlock Holmes together just before Halloween and having the story narrated by Jack the Ripper's dog sounds like a great idea, but sadly Zelazny doesn't really know what to do with his cast once he's got them and the Gaimanesque blend of creepy and whimsical never really catches fire. Pity.

I got this book as a gift in a Halloween book swap, and boy, am I glad I did! It took me a few pages to get into the rhythm and style of the story (Victorian, Poe, Lovecraft?) but then it hooked me. I love the creativity of both the story itself and the perspective form which it's told. The book is split into 32 chapters and it was suggested that I read one chapter every night during October, ending on Halloween. I plan to do just that next year.

Re-reading an old favorite. Narrated by Snuff, the watchdog of an occult practitioner named Jack, the thirty-one short chapters chronicle the thirty-one days of a particular October. A group has gathered to play an ancient game with high stakes. The tale is told through the familiars of the (mostly) human players as they negotiate to alternately aid and confuse the other teams. But you can't say which team you're on untill the last moment.

Every Halloween that coincides with a full moon, an odd group meet up. Some are Openers, hoping to welcome the Elder Gods to Earth. Some are Closers, hoping to shut out the Lovecraftian horrors.

This book deals with one such Halloween in which Jack the Ripper, the Wolfman, Dracula, Dr. Frankenstein, a Satanic Vicar and others play a round of this deadly game. Sherlock Holmes shows up too!

All narrated by Jack‘s pet dog Snuff.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk It was solid and occasionally fun, but lacked the punch to send it over the edge into Pick territory. 7y

I've never read any Roger Zelazny, but I've always loved this title whenever I came across it, so I picked it up to read this year.

If I'm understanding the premise it's about Jack the Ripper vs Sherlock Holmes, and Dracula and Frankenstein's monster get involved somehow... all told from the point of view of the Ripper's dog, Snuff.

31 chapters and the back of the book recommends one a day so that's what I'll do. #thefinalcountdown #Rocktober
