The New York Times bestselling author of No Cats Allowed and Arsenic and Old Books is back with more Southern charm and beguiling mystery as Charlie and Diesel must find a killer in a room full of librarians... Light-hearted librarian Charlie Harris is known around his hometown of Athena, Mississippi, for walking his cat, a rescued Maine Coon named Diesel. But he may soon be taken for a walk himselfin handcuffs... Charlie is stressed out. The Southern Academic Libraries Association is holding this years annual meeting at Athena College. Since Charlie is the interim library director, he must deliver the welcome speech to all the visiting librarians. And as if that werent bad enough, the keynote address will be delivered by Charlies old nemesis from library school. Its been thirty years since Charlie has seen Gavin Fong, and hes still an insufferable know-it-all capable of getting under everyones skin. In his keynote, Gavin puts forth a most unpopular opinion: that degreed librarians will be obsolete in the academic libraries of the future. So, when Gavin drops dead, no one seems too upset... But Charlie, who was seen having a heated argument with Gavin the day before, has jumped to the top of the suspect list. Now Charlie and Diesel must check out every clue to refine their search for the real killer among them before the next book Charlie reads comes from a prison library... From the Hardcover edition.

Bailedbailed

Written in the first person it took me a while to realise that this was a male voice. It did not get me in so finally I bailed. But not before reading who did it!

Jeg Just read that the author is actually an older white man! 9mo

An unpleasant keynote speaker at a conference at Charlie's library drops dead on stage, the water in his bottle having been poisoned.

Although the mystery was interesting, the various decisions Charlie and his family and friends needed to make in their professional lives and the possible consequences for this series kept me interested more. I must admit I wasn't keeping track closely enough to see whether there actually 12 librarians involved.

The title should have tipped me off. A murder where everyone is a suspect, especially the protagonist, because the victim had It coming.

I had a hard time believing this was written by woman, googled the author and found that "Miranda" is a pseudonym and these are in fact written by an old white guy from Mississippi. The protagonist's pay and cost of living made no sense and did not enjoy the serial sexual assaulter who is caught in the act and "encouraged to move on" rather than you know, arrested- tho at least that is realistic.

Purrsistently The MC works a part time job and somehow pays not only a mortgage but HOUSEHOLD SERVANTS that serve him breakfast in the morning and yet he can't buy a tie because he's too poor? You can get a tie at Ross for $4. What the heck are you paying your HOUSEKEEPER IF YOU CAN'T BUY A TIE. 5y
Purrsistently What part time librarian has household servants?! 5y

BibliOphelia Ugh. Male writer of cozies writing under a female pen bane is so cynical. If you write good stories/characters, no one cares what your gender is. 5y
Purrsistently @BibliOphelia yeah, it left a bad taste in my mouth. I get when someone creates a character that is part of the experience, like Lemony Snicket, and I get needing to mask your identify as an oppressed group, but pretending to be another demographic presumably to make those people feel safe with you feels gross. (edited) 5y

My daughter and I are struggling to adapt to a new library system (what a problem to have!). Old library had a three-week check-out period and no limit on number of books (movies and games max of five and one week only); new library has two-week period and max of forty books. That sounds like a lot, but we‘ve been known to have 60+ at a time.

Today the librarians hadn‘t checked in our massive return (cont. below)

ravenlee so we couldn‘t check out our almost-equally-impressive haul. So the librarian at the desk had to sort through all our returns, check them all back in, and THEN check out our next load. She acted pretty irritated about it, actually. It‘s gonna take a while to get into a good routine here, unfortunately. 😕 5y
DivineDiana You can do it! 🙂 5y
LibrarianRyan Ughhhh. I would have been so upset if that was my staff member. They should have taken you at your word and just override the system. Ughhhh 5y
See All 7 Comments
Clare-Dragonfly A two-week checkout period! That‘s too short. It took me a while to adjust to my current library‘s two renewals instead of three! 5y
ravenlee @Clare-Dragonfly I should be fair and mention they don‘t have fines for overdue books (which is very good as we‘re adapting, especially since I found one yesterday that was already six days overdue!), so that‘s pretty cool. 5y
ravenlee @LibrarianRyan What was irritating was that 3 librarians watched us put our books in the return slot - one even thanked us. Two of them were at the desk the entire time we were browsing, so 20-ish minutes. But nothing happened until we needed to check out, and then the lady doing it had to flip through every. single. book. we brought back before she scanned it in (as far as I can tell, she was making sure there were pages in the books). 5y
LibrarianRyan @ravenlee ughhh as I said my staff would have been reprimanded. That is just bad patron service. 5y

There was never any worry, but it baffles me that this many people would vote NOT to renew funding for our libraries!!! Who are these people (as I look around suspiciously)??? 🤔🤬🤯🤓🤨

Quirkybookworm You'd be surprised how many people don't read books nowadays. There are who despise them and even say waste of time. You can recognize them in bookstores, uncomfortable and wanting to get out as if they were in a lingerie store. 6y

After more than 200,000 views of Panos Mourdoukoutas' article stating that Amazon should replace public libraries, Forbes deleted the article in shame. Bravo. Next time, fact check in advance, idiots. Where was the editorial process?

britt_brooke It was such a stupid article. 6y
TheSpineView Agree! Idiots!😡 6y
2BR02B I didn't get a chance to read the actual article, but it sounds like the author was a privileged ass. 6y

ladym30 No cure for stupid! 6y
REPollock I saw something on Twitter about how Forbes has an option where if you pay something like $1500 you can publish an article you wrote on their site, and then be able to call yourself a Forbes contributor. And, that‘s what this was? Shitty, regardless. 6y
readordierachel @2BR02B The article is archived if you want to see it. It's poorly written, poorly argued, and just generally stupid: https://web.archive.org/web/20180722060035/https://www.forbes.com/sites/panosmou... 6y

Yes, it has been done. And do not get me started on gross stuff I have found in DVD cases and/ or discs 😳🤢Thinking about starting a blog with my fun and interesting stories I have from being a librarian. Only problem is I have tried it ( when I was in college) and totally forgot about it. Should I try it again?

I can tolerate a lot in goofy cat mysteries, but poor editing drives me crazy. If the characters are sharing a room at a conference on page 57, they can‘t have separate rooms on page 207.

24/ 7 Wall Street and USA Today, among others, have incorrectly reported false facts that Libraries and the job of a librarian are swiftly meeting their demise, and will be one of the first jobs to be extinct in the upcoming years. Here is the response #BOOM 🧐🤓🎉🙌🏻 https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2018/01/05/reports-libraries-demise-based-fl...

Nice light mystery starring a librarian solving a murder at a library conference. This series is an enjoyable, quick read. This author spoke at a conference I was at a few years ago, and I enjoyed the speech.
