On the Road (Revised)
On the Road (Revised) | Jack Kerouac
The quintessential American vision of freedom and hope vibrant, compelling, and full of wonder On the Roadchronicles Jack Kerouac's years traveling the North American continent with his friend Neal Cassady, "a sideburned hero of the snowy West." As "Sal Paradise" and "Dean Moriarty," the two roam the country in a quest for self-knowledge and experience. Kerouac's love of America, his compassion for humanity, and his sense of language as jazz combine to make On the Road an inspirational work of lasting importance. Kerouac s classic novel of freedom and longing defined what it meant to be Beat and has inspired every generation since its initial publication more than fifty years ago. This Penguin Classics edition contains an introduction by Ann Charters. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators."

“...Ones who never yawn or say a commonplace thing, but burn, burn, burn like fabulous yellow Roman candles exploding like spiders across stars and in the middle you see the blue centerlight pop and everybody goes ‘Awww!‘”

Kerouac and his imagery!! Gives me the chills.

What about you? Have you read On the Road?? #nfnov #nonfictionnovember

Lifeisasnap @Freespirit yes, you should!! 3mo
Lifeisasnap @ljuliel well, I‘m only a few chapters in and it‘s like a travel book written Grapes of Wrath style. Descriptive, full of amazing imagery and even smells. I read it as a teen however, it seems like something I‘ve never read now that I‘m reading it today. It‘s very weird. 3mo
Lifeisasnap @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego so many quotes!! What you don‘t see in the photo is the numerous little tabs marking perfect imagery. It‘s been slow reading because of it. Which I don‘t mind. 😉 3mo
Lifeisasnap @readingjedi you should. To me it‘s a whole new book in my older age. 😀 btw- I love your profile name. 3mo

When I pulled On the Road out of my TBR to read for #1001Books, I didn‘t realize it (right) was the first draft of the novel. I compared some passages to the published version (L), and while I have some issues with both, feel the first draft is more honest. For instance, the sexual relationship between Neal Cassady and Allen Ginsberg is basically censored in the final version.

Real names were changed to fictional for the published version👇:

ValerieAndBooks Jack Kerouac = Sal Paradise, Neal Cassady = Dean Moriarty, Allen Ginsberg = Carlo Marx, William (Bill) Burroughs=Old Bull Lee (edited) 3mo
ValerieAndBooks I feel I should clarify I read the “first draft “ in its entirety but just a few passages from the published version. I don‘t feel compelled right now to read the full published version but maybe someday? 3mo
CafeMom This one is so-so for me too. 3mo

I am about halfway through On the Road: The Original Scroll, and starting to realize it‘s a lot different than the version published in 1957. I‘ve never read the latter, but just did some comparisons, as above. The scroll version (typed on one long piece of blank newsprint) has no paragraph or chapter breaks and was the very first draft. Pictured: intro lines from both versions. top is the published version. Bottom: the scroll aka first draft.

Suet624 Well that‘s interesting. Divorce or death. Which is it? 3mo

Sal Paradise seems like a bit of a #Partyman when he goes off on his road trips with Dean Moriarty.

#SoaringScores @Cinfhen @CrowCAH

Cinfhen Not familiar/ more info please 🙏🏼 3mo
TheEllieMo @Cinfhen it‘s a sort of autobiographical novel by Jack Kerouac; he is persuaded to go on several wild road trips, involving jazz, poetry and drugs. It‘s one of those books where I hated the characters, and their lifestyle, but the writing transcended both. It‘s a classic, a Boxhall 1001 3mo

On The Road is to the Beat generation what The Sun Also Rises was to the Lost generation of the ‘20s. You‘ll often see them compared, held up side-by-side. I didn't *love* either of them, but I‘m going to plant my flag and say that On The Road was the better of the two, because to my mind it presented a far more self-aware and nuanced treatment of masculinity. I‘m going to be away and/or busy over the next week or so! Which #1001Books should I take with me? Will probably just read for a bit each day.

We‘re first going to help daughter (last year of college 😮!) and her girlfriend move into their new apartment, then move youngest son (first year of college) in his dorm room. Our anniversary is also coming up and we may go somewhere for a couple days after dropping him off, but TBD where.

LauraBeth Why not leave On The Road behind in your son‘s place to discover and leave Kafka On The Shore behind for your daughter and her gf to discover? I‘d read A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian 🚜 I‘m a book leave-behinder 😂 5mo
JoyBlue Congratulations on all the milestones! 💙 5mo
CafeMom The only one I read was A Short History of Tractors which I loved. It is a dark comedy. I think you can't go wrong with a Murakami either. 5mo

Reggie I hope everything goes well and that you have a great anniversary trip!!! 5mo
Lynnsoprano I have Short History of Tractors... and have been thinking about reading it soon. Maybe our buddy read? We‘ve both had a tough year, but I‘d still love to do one. 5mo

I‘m maybe too old to appreciate this one?

In the beginning, I enjoyed the adventure of just taking off across the country with nothing. There are some phrases in this book that are just incredibly written. Around halfway through, I was sick of Sal‘s white male chauvinist homophobe semi-racist crap, and really wished something new would happen. Also, I wanted to slap the shit out of Dean. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Will Patton is cool, though. 😂

⭐️⭐️

#1001books

gradcat I love your review! 1y
dawn-pInk I would recommend Bonnie Bremser Frazer. 1y
CarolynM Yeah, it didn't do a lot for me, either. One thing I thought was really interesting though - nobody mentioned the war. There were a couple of mentions of being stationed somewhere or other, but nothing about the war itself, or any experiences in the military. Considering when it was set (and written) I expected it to come up somewhere. 1y
See All 17 Comments
sprainedbrain @CarolynM That was very odd... clearly the Beat Generation writers were anti-war, but you would think all these travels back and forth across the country so soon after WWII there would be some mention. 🤷🏻‍♀️ (edited) 1y
CarolynM Yes, you would think being anti-war would make them want to talk about the consequences, at least. 1y
BookwormM I read the book but personally couldn‘t wait to “get off the bus” 1y
BarbaraBB Still need to read this one. 1y
Victoriahoperose This one isn‘t my top pick by Kerouac. He actually has a strong connection with Buddhism which he explores deeper in The Dharma Bums. If you‘re trying to get into The Beats and want more about the state of the world, you may like Ginsberg better. I definitely recommend Howl and America (both poems) by him. He is a lot more reader friendly than Kerouac and super powerful. ☺️ 1y
Lauredhel I just can't stand these dudelit "classics" most of the time. Salinger. Hemingway. Bleagh. 1y
sprainedbrain @Victoriahoperose Thank you for this! I‘ve had Ginsberg on my tbr forever, so I will definitely give him a try. 1y
sprainedbrain @Lauredhel ‘Dudelit‘ made me 😂 (edited) 1y
sprainedbrain @dawn-pInk Thank you! I‘m going to see if I can track down a copy of Troia... that sounds interesting. 1y
ravenlee I tried to read it in high school and didn‘t get far because it just annoyed me. So maybe it‘s not an age thing so much as a taste thing. And @Lauredhel “dudelit” is perfect! 1y
Reviewsbylola I HATED this one!! 1y
Zelma I think this is pretty much written for guys in high school and college; it doesn‘t seem to have wide appeal. 1y
mrsh62010 It was a big time DNF for me for the same reasons. Sexism, racism and homophobia are my biggest turn offs. 1y
Blaire I liked this one but I read it in high school, might have a different impression now. 1y

One straight out of my Top-3!
You won't find like an actual story in this particular book, there won't be a beginning, a middle or an end....But you'll will find a certain magic that is hard to explain, a magic that comes out of the poetry that is in every page, that connects you straight to that era!

Oh dear, love his writing , not sure I wanna be like Jack! We both like cats but if I was too much like Jack I might not be on the planet anymore.

vivastory I'm nobody! Who are you?...er, I mean I'm Emily Dickinson 😄 2y
BarbaraBB @vivastory Me too... I was very surprised by the result, and you?! 2y
vivastory @BarbaraBB I was! But also really pleased. She's one of my favorite poets of all time. 2y
ValerieAndBooks I‘m James Baldwin. I‘m cool with that but wonder how I got him 😊! 2y

These two #journeystory books have been sitting next to each other, TBR, for a really long time on my shelves. I should get to them soon as they‘re both #1001Books. Which one should I read first 🤔? #maylovesclassics

Leftcoastzen My vote would be by order of publication. 2y
SqueakyChu Either one. I enjoyed them both. Well, maybe start with On The Road. 2y
OrangeMooseReads Start with On the Road. Both of these are excellent books 2y

Cathythoughts I was looking at On The Road in the shop today ... I must have at least dipped into it years ago 🤔, it was all the rage. . I‘d love to hear your thoughts if this is the one you go for 👍🏻 (edited) 2y
ValerieAndBooks @Leftcoastzen @SqueakyChu @OrangeMooseReads @Cathythoughts Looks like the vote is for On the Road first of these two 😊! It was indeed published first. The #Litsy rating is only 25% 😱 2y

Leftcoastzen @ValerieAndBooks Try to put it in its historical context , there were people who came back from WWII and wanted suburbia , the grey flannel suit, and then there were the ones wanted no part of the middle class American life, hipsters , dreamers , artists , authority and conformity was not their bag.Kerouac started it in 1949, though not published till 57.I think even if you don‘t love it ,you will get how it was a breakthrough,of sorts. 2y
Leftcoastzen Oh ,and look online for the key to who everybody is if it‘s not in the introduction. Makes it more fun ! 2y
