Castle of Water: A Novel | Dane Huckelbridge

Two very different people, one very small island. For Sophie Ducel, her honeymoon in French Polynesia was intended as a celebration of life. The proud owner of a thriving Parisian architecture firm, co-founded with her brilliant new husband, Sophie had much to look forward toincluding a visit to the island home of her favorite singer, Jacques Brel. For Barry Bleecker, the same trip was meant to mark a new beginning. Turning away from his dreary existence in Manhattan finance, Barry had set his sights on fine art, seeking creative inspiration on the other side of the worldjust like his idol, Paul Gauguin. But when their small plane is downed in the middle of the South Pacific, the sole survivors of the wreck are left with one common goal: to survive. Stranded hundreds of miles from civilization, on an island the size of a large city block, the two castaways must reconcile their differences and learn to draw on one another's strengths if they are to have any hope of making it home. Told in mesmerizing prose, with charm and rhythm entirely its own, Castle of Water is more than just a reimagining of the classic castaway story. It is a stirring reflection on loves restorative potential, as well as a poignant reminder that homebe it a flat in Paris, a New York apartment, or a desolate atoll a world awayis where the heart is.

I‘ve recommended this book to so many people. It‘s short and packs a big punch (and, it doesn‘t get the buzz I think it deserves).

The other “C” book that was really fantastic was Columbine.

Sophie and Barry find themselves stuck on an island. They don‘t necessarily get a long at first but quickly realise that they need each other for survival.

I felt like I was on an island with the characters while reading this book. There were glimpses of the present day throughout it and I kept on thinking of how it will end…

I adored this book! The author is a wordsmith! It felt like the story flowed as easy as waves upon the shore. I literally could have been in a hammock beneath a coconut grove while reading this. A story of 2 ppl from completely different worlds, end up deserted together on an unknown Island. The words were beautiful, and the story had me. The ending was perfect. I could not love it more. A perfect summer read.

Ok so still ADORING this book, BUT I have a bone to pick. These 2 have been living off of bananas for a year now, and still no mention of constipation or bloating? Come now 🤪

Curiouser_and_curiouser If you Google "Banana Girl" you will see that this woman actually only eats bananas for long periods of time, 30 a day from memory. She looks amazing! I don't think bananas could possibly constipate anyone, but I'm sure a lot of other more unnatural foods would most likely be the culprit. Bananas are full of fiber and energy. 4y
MynameisSnow @Curiouser_and_curiouser wow yeah she does look amazing. I guess it‘s unique to individuals then because I LOVE bananas but if I have more than 1 a day, I pay for it dearly. Doc told me they can be tricky in digestion when you eat too many of them. Then again I guess it‘s probable that they body gets used to what it‘s given. I do know that they are fullllll of nutrients. (edited) 4y
MynameisSnow @Curiouser_and_curiouser what would be your 1 food pick if you had 1 food to live off of for the rest of your life? Mine would be almonds 4y
Curiouser_and_curiouser @MynameisSnow you know, I probably would say bananas. They are my go to, esp when I'm avoiding bread/pasta/rice type foods. Love bananas. I buy kilos every week & they go fast in my house where we promote fresh food over packaged. My kids love them too. I could easily eat 5-6 a day if I'm avoiding white carbs. My daughter blends them with frozen berries & makes her own healthy "ice cream". Very versatile & yummo! 4y
Curiouser_and_curiouser @MynameisSnow We love almonds though, we make our own almond milk, it was my daughters first milk aside from breast milk. And our delicious flour free chocolate chia cake has lots almonds also. It's great to rely on if you choose not to eat flour based products :) Stay safe and healthy, esp in this current time. 4y

Not too far into this book yet, but I‘m immediately gripped. Eek at the Oceanic White Tip Shark scene!!!! In love with the way this story is narrated, sort of like Stranger Than Fiction style. Im in love with the character set up. I‘m in it, be back with you when it‘s finished for final thoughts ❤️

Thanks to all who wished me a Happy Birthday yesterday. I went birthday shopping for myself yesterday at Boswell Book Company on the east side of Milwaukee. While there were a lot of books that I could have bought, I settled on these two. I also found a pair of book nerd socks and a mug with the store's logo on it. It was a good day. 😊

I loved this book about survivors stranded on a Polynesian atoll Island. He is American and she is French. The story throws in a timeline of what is happening around them from the past and from what they are missing back home. I think this may now be my favorite book from this year👍🏼🛶🐚🍌🐙🌴🌊

4.5/5
Let me preface this by saying I have a terrible fear of flying. Of course, a few chapters in, there is a plane crash. That was just the beginning of the anxiety that persisted throughout the remaining chapters. This a very intense (sometimes humorous) story about the struggles that the two survivors endure while trying to survive on a small, uncharted Pacific island.

This book! You need to read it now. After a slump of reading blah, mediocre books, this one reminded me why I love to read. You‘ll fall in love with the main characters from start to finish and will want to learn to speak French if you don‘t already know how. I cannot wait for Huckelbridge‘s next novel!

This book follows the story of two castaways who are the only survivors of a plane crash. They must figure out how to get by on an island without many resources. Loved getting to know these characters and worried along with them as they faced more and more obstacles. (Plus, I realized I would be pretty much doomed if this ever happened to me!). ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
