Everyone in Phoebe Ferris s life tells a different version of the truth. Her mother, Meg, ex-rock star and professional question evader, shares only the end of the story the post-fame calm that Phoebe s always known. Her sister Luna, indie rock darling of Brooklyn, preaches a stormy truth of her own making, selectively ignoring the facts she doesn t like. And her father, Kieran, the co-founder of Meg s beloved band, hasn t said anything at all since he stopped calling three years ago.But Phoebe, a budding poet in search of an identity to call her own, is tired of half-truths and vague explanations. When she visits Luna in New York, she s determined to find out how she fits in to this family of storytellers, and maybe even to continue her own tale the one with the musician boy she s been secretly writing for months. This soul-searching, authentic debut weaves together Phoebe s story with scenes from the romance between Meg and Kieran that started it all leaving behind a heartfelt reflection on family, fame, and finding your own way."

Not a bad coming-of-age story. A fun, simple YA read that‘s great for the beach or cabin. Has a lot of good points for book club discussions, and the easy text and light plot make it a good read for a variety of ages and reading levels.

3.5 stars

Nothing really amazing here, but a really sweet book about 2 sisters on the cusps of their lives. It‘s a great summer read - it‘s a seamless read - and it‘s quick. A great book to have around when you want something light & sweet.

This was a wonderful read. I loved how the point of view changed from present to past, daughter to mother. It gave a different story while answers questions from the first story. I started reading it and was hooked. I felt like I couldn't put it down because I just wanted to know what was going to happen next. I highly recommend this book!

I survived work!! You ever feel like you need a 🏅or🏆 for that?

Finished this sweet book on the way home yesterday. It's a cute story about two sisters, a mother, and some rock and roll. It was definitely more adult than the usual YA since some of the chapters were narrated by the mother about the end of her marriage. Solid narration. Overall, recommend! #botm #botmchallenge 29/35

A YA book about two sisters whose divorced parents are former rock stars. They have an estranged relationship with their father who is still in the music business and the older sister seems to be following in her parents footsteps. It isn't an overly exciting book - not a lot happens. But, as someone who is obsessed with music, it was nice to see something different and I loved the old musician references. It was cute.

Never would have discovered this book without Litsy and that would have been a shame. I picked up when I made my lunch and somehow it is getting dark. This is a great YA about a girl visiting her older sister in NYC for a few days and trying to navigate her way through all of gaps in what she knows about her family.

Reviewsbylola I was initially very skeptical of this one when it was a BOTM pick a few months ago. I am glad I gave it a chance because I loved it! 7y

I'm on my way to the airport in an hour and my carry on is stuffed full, so I had to hurry up and finish my book! This is one of those #botm books that I was completely uninterested in and now I am annoyed that I didn't add it to one of my boxes. It is the perfect example of YA done right. I loved following Phoebe, Luna, and Meg as they examined and reflected about their familial relationships and lives. #botmchallenge

I adored this book. It's a beautifully written coming of age story. McNally's background in poetry comes through in the writing. I found Phoebe a relatable and likable character and also enjoyed the chapters from the perspective of her mother at a younger age, which gave the story some much needed background and pulled it together. Some connections weren't made that I wish were... but for a debut novel, this was lovely.

Solid YA novel. 👌🏻 I really loved the story going back and forth from Phoebe's current day perspective to her mom's experience in the band in the 90s, which in turn was running parallel with Phoebe's sister's life in the present. It sounds complex, but it was honestly a sweet, quick, and interesting read and I'm glad this was my #BOTM pick for January.

This book was not an exciting page turner type of book. However, the gorgeous language and deep character development kept me reading and wishing for more. I love "I'm with the band" stories and the overall feeling of this story felt nostalgic of 90s bands. Sweet story of the choices we make based on what we consider as vital to our individual expression of our complex lives.

I'm working on getting better on this review part. The main character, Phoebe, feels so real I could slip into her. The relationships with her family and friends are well done, and kept the story going. Enjoyable easy read, loved the setting and the writing, very descriptive. I finished while Navi was doing a little bird watching.
