My final #Booked2021 prompt (#Blackjack21) was also my November #doublespin pick (yay for two birds, one stone!). I enjoyed this one, but do be warned -- it's a book about suicide. I actually put this down after a really fast start as a cautionary measure because of some stuff I was going through -- but it wasn't really necessary. There is hope in here!!

Oh gosh! I was NOT prepared for the emotional roller coaster this book took me on! In short, it was simply amazing! I really loved and felt for the characters, which made it even harder to read at times! Oh, make sure to read the TW! I don't think I would be able to recommend this book enough. It left me speechless, breathless, scared, worried, happy, angry, and every other emotion under the sun. One of my top 5-star picks for the year! #5star

Nute Seems like an important story to read. Stacking! (edited) 3y
alexus_sb @Nute In my option it really is! But I think it would be different for everyone. If you have the time I would recommend! 3y

I‘m kind of posting this at the last minute today so I‘m very sorry 😭😭😭😭 but here‘s mine!
Since the song is about heartbreak I decided to go with this one. Planning on reading it soon but I need to be emotionally prepared because I know it‘s really sad.
The subject matter this book deals with is a very delicate topic that may be triggering to some, so I suggest checking Goodreads if you wanna know what it‘s about 😊

The Kindle finally got to have its moment with my August #bookspin book. I fell in love with the two damaged, depressed characters in this book about two kids who make a suicide pact. While I think the message that love essentially is all you need to overcome depression is wide of the mark (I think that might be how we all *want* it to be), I still loved this book‘s honest portrayal of depression and the relationship the main characters have.

“Anyone who has actually been that sad can tell you that there's nothing beautiful or literary or mysterious about depression.”

LiterRohde While I think it is important to share, both for the writer and the reader, as I believe we can heal and learn a lot from each other‘s stories, and I do believe our experiences inform our creativity, I do kind of hate the trope of the romanticized brooding artist. 5y
Megabooks Completely agree with this comment ⬆️! I love reading the quotes you select! 5y
TK-421 I love everything about this post: the quote, the image, your comments 👏👏👏 I don‘t particularly care for that trope either. It doesn‘t do anyone any favours. I have to say that in my experience, the other side of the coin, mania, also isn‘t beautiful or mysterious. 5y
LiterRohde @TK-421 Agreed. Frustrating & Exhausting. 💯 Beautiful & Mysterious. ❌ And that doesn‘t mean that something good can‘t be made from a person‘s experience. But the thing itself is not good. 5y

I have very mixed emotions about this book. I already know where life has brought me and I‘ve never had a suicidal thought. On one hand, it would bother me to recommend this book to a mentally unstable teenager because they might think that a suicide pact is a great idea. On the other hand, the author handled a very though idea with thoughtfulness and hope. Maybe If a young person read this book, they may be able to help someone else who is need.

Very good, insightful look at depression and teen suicide... at least in the first half. Gets a little muddled in second half when an unnecessary romance takes over.

I don‘t post a lot of book reviews but I felt I needed to for this. I started this book when I was in a dark place and I‘m not going to say that it brought me out of it but my own natural progression seemed to follow Aysel‘s. This is the first time I‘ve had a fictional work (book/movie/show) actually describe my experience with depression accurately. If you or someone you know has depression, I‘d suggest reading it.

CouronneDhiver Great review! A personal connection makes for an excellent recommendation 6y
Shibbyfruitfly @CouronneDhiver Thanks! I saw a few bad reviews on GoodReads where people said that it didn‘t accurately describe their experience so I thought I‘d put it out there that everyone experiences things differently (which is actually one of the points the books tried to make.) 😊 6y

Loved it. The parts I appreciated most, were oddly the small things Aysel would point out. Like if they teach you to look friendly without smiling in medical school. I related heavily with the characters, and Aysel‘s depression, at least for me, was represented very well.

The friendship between Aysel and Roman begins under disturbing circumstances: they decide to become suicide partners. These characters—their circumstances, feelings, and intentions—broke my heart as together, they share their stories and their pain and prepare for the big day. Through it all, Aysel‘s narration is endearing, smart, and a little humorous. I don‘t think the ending was handled in the best way, but I did enjoy this book overall.

I really love this quick read! I'm experiencing depression/anxiety as well (but not to the point of planning suicide like Aysel) but then I met this girl that understands me and listens to my problems. She became my best friend. I can really relate to the book because when Roman came to Aysel's life, everything got better.. just like me and mah bestieeee😂❤

#MayBookFlowers #day24 #readthisnotthat This was a hard prompt because I don't like criticizing books. But, if you're looking for a book like one of these, I much preferred My Heart and Other Black Holes. In the end, I felt it was much more hopeful. Plus, the author is local to Cincinnati and super sweet. 💙

“I once read in my physics book that the universe begs to be observed, that energy travels and transfers when people pay attention. Maybe that's what love really boils down to--having someone who cares enough to pay attention so that you're encouraged to travel and transfer, to make your potential energy spark into kinetic energy.”

This book was not for me. Suicide is such a heavy topic, but I found myself very detached from both of the main characters. I easily tire of contemporary YA and so I feel age was a factor. Maybe 17 yr old me would find this book more sad and tragic and would be moved by the angsty teenage romance. 33 yr old me was thinking about her next read. ⭐️⭐️.5/5

LazyLibrary @cinfhen I'm getting to that point too. when I'm reading this deep and tragic teen story, full of overdone turmoil and tears, but then they break to go to gym class...🙄or the teen finds out she's really an angel being chased by a demon...but she has a chem quiz 😂 I can't. 8y

YES YES YES. I loved this book so so sooooo much. I would say it's probably one of my favourite books ever. I loved the characters so much - I literally decided that I wanted to call my children Aysel and Roman after reading. The book perfectly touches on depression, how soul crushing and debilitating it can be. PLEASE READ.

This photo is the author's note at the end of the book and this blurb explains it much better than I could about what this books message is.

The story is about Aysel and Roman who are both dealing with depression and make a pact to commit suicide together. It is so beautifully written. It doesn't make depression seem romantic like some other books I've read have done despite what happens. This book is about being open about mental illness. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
