Black Panther: A Nation Under Our Feet Book 1
Black Panther: A Nation Under Our Feet Book 1 | Ta-Nehisi Coates
A new era begins for the Black Panther! MacArthur Genius and National Book Award-winning writer T-Nehisi Coates (BETWEEN THE WORLD AND ME) takes the helm, confronting T'Challa with a dramatic upheaval in Wakanda that will make leading the African nation tougher than ever before. When a superhuman terrorist group that calls itself The People sparks a violent uprising, the land famed for its incredible technology and proud warrior traditions will be thrown into turmoil. If Wakanda is to survive, it must adapt--but can its monarch, one in a long line of Black Panthers, survive the necessary change? Heavy lies the head that wears the cowl! This had a bit more of a complex storyline than the last one (probably because it was written by Ta-Nehisi Coates 😏) but not overly so. The illustrations were absolutely beautiful and it was good to get a bit of a backstory for Aneka, a character who will be played by the lovely Michaela Cole in the upcoming movie 🥰

Littens! I‘m late to this but Amazon has several of the Blank Panther comics available for free right now! This is super cool! Loved the movie and I‘m excited to get more story in the comics!

Breathtaking art paired with powerful story and prose by Ta-Nehisi Coates.

#ReadHarder2018: a comic written or drawn by a person of color. I agree with other reviews that Marvel shouldn't have marketed this as an entry point for new readers who came to the comics from the movie -- it's a nuanced, thoughtful dive into Wakandan politics and leadership that goes deeper than a newbie might be prepared to go. But for folks who know their comics lore, it's a great read.

This book deals with a lot of backstory, which I don‘t have but explains well enough that I could follow along. It was a decent comic, but there was so much going on that it felt a bit underdeveloped. I do enjoy that the main question is: can a revolution that is supposed to be for the people by the people be founded on blood shed. I give this a 2.5/5. I‘m glad I read it, but happier I didn‘t buy it.

I found this book confusing as it drops the reader into the middle of the action with no backstory. I don't know who I'm supposed to be rooting for, as every character seems to have good and bad characteristics. I am wondering if I missed too much being a Black Panther newbie (and really a newbie to superhero comics in general). But I will continue with the rest of the story with hopes that things will become more clear.

I really wanted to like this more. It was good enough to get me interested in Vol 2. A lot of time was spent on the psychology of a monarch and the psychology of a revolutionary. Hopefully it comes to a head on Vol 2.

Though the actual storyline was confusing in this version, I loved reading it because of the beautiful artwork and extras like a map of Wakanda, sketches, and a chronology of all the comics Black Panther appeared in. And the original 1961 Fantastic Four comic, in which he first appeared, is included in the back!

I enjoyed the writing with this one, but I have to admit I initially found it confusing. Readers are dropped right into the middle of the action, and it isn‘t until the closer to the end of the comic that we‘re given a more (but not completely) fleshed out idea of what‘s going on. But I liked the storyline and the art, so I‘ll continue with the series!

Unfortunately, there's too much established history and too many characters for a newbie to the Black Panther comics to follow. We're thrown into a story with little explanation, and no reason to root for one side over the other. Wakanda is in dire straights, and I have no clue how they got there, how T'Challa could possibly get out of it, or if I even want him to prevail. He's the hero, but I know very little about this comic version of him.

CindyE09 I tried to read this too as a Panther comic book newbie, but I had the same problems with lack of backstory and explanation. 6y
RachLovesTV @CindyE09 Glad it wasn't just me! I've hopped into other long-running titles at the start of a new run/new author and it's never been a problem before. Definitely a bummer. 6y

Finally finished this...and it was alright. As someone who saw the movie THREE TIMES in theater, I think it was hard for me to adjust to how dystopic Wakanda is in this volume. Plus you get plopped right in the middle of a conflict and have to kind of figure what‘s going on. That said, the writing and the IMAGES are both beautiful 😍🙅🏽‍♀️

[Book 7 of 2018] Okay, I hate to give this a so-so but I somehow found it both confusing and too slow. Will need to reread it before I continue the series, though, because now I've seen the movie and forgotten this. Sigh. (I'm behind a few months in posting)

This isn't my favourite of the BP comics I have read so far, but still really good. The art was really pretty (particularly the scenery) and the story was incredibly intriguing. I loved seeing more of Aneka and Ayo after reading World of Wakanda. Looking forward to the next volume, but also to previous runs.

Heideschrampf By ta nahisi coates??! I didnt know he wrote comics now too. Awesomen (edited) 7y
elizabethlk @Heideschrampf Yep! He has been doing the most recent run of the core series of Black Panther, along with some work on World of Wakanda and BP and the Crew. You can tell he is new to both the medium and the genre, but it is still great stuff. 7y

I had a hard time rating this one. I am not a comic book fan, but I chose this to fulfill one of the #readharder challenges. I love the illustrations, they are colourful and rich in detail. I struggled with the story. This was my first exposure to the Black Panther, and I found the narrative hard to follow without knowing the backstory. That is why I gave it a so-so rating.

alisiakae @Phlamboyant I have read a few Black Panther issues before (around the time when he married Storm and the Civil War issues). That helped, as did Google. The 2nd volume was much easier to follow, and I‘m definitely more invested in the story now! Oh, the days of reading while nursing! I remember them well! (edited) 7y

You guys, I just got out of the Black Panther movie & it is amazing. By far one of the best superhero movies I've seen, from the acting to the set design. Just incredible. & I'm almost certain it has more prominent female characters than any other superhero movie (including Wonder Woman considering Themyscira is only briefly the focus). If you love comic book movies or are just looking for something really great to watch, go see Black Panther.

Chelleo I hope to see it next weekend! 7y

It's always difficult to give graphic novels a full five stars because I always feel as though I'm entering the story in the middle without all the needed background information. One day I shall read all the connecting storylines and then I might be able to come back and change 4 stars to 5 stars.

Even feeling a little out of the loop, I still found this graphic novel engaging and entertaining. So I would call it a success.

I was just a little disappointed in this one, I so wanted to love it after seeing the movie previews, which look fantastic, but I have Vol 2 here also so hopefully it‘ll grow on me more as I get to know these characters more.

This comic is visually gorgeous and definitely worth the read, but while it's book 1 in a new arc it drops you into the middle of a revolution with very little backstory. It has a lot of potential but definitely not a good starting point for those unfamiliar with the character. #readharder2018 #readingblackout
