Dinner with Mr Darcy
Dinner with Mr Darcy: Recipes inspired by the novels and letters of Jane Austen | Pen Vogler
16 posts | 7 read | 20 to read
Food is an important theme in Jane Austen's novels - it is used as a commodity for showing off, as a way of showing kindliness among neighbors, as part of the dynamics of family life, and-of course-for comic effect. Dinner with Mr Darcy takes authentic recipes from the period, inspired by the food that features in Austen's novels and letters, and adapts them for contemporary cooks. The text is interwoven throughout with quotes from the novels, and feature spreads cover some of the key themes of food and eating in Austen’s time, including table arrangements, kitchens and gardens, changing mealtimes, and servants and service. Whether you are hoping to beguile a single gentleman in possession of a substantial fortune, or you just want to have your own version of the picnic on Box Hill in Emma, you will find fully updated recipes using easily available ingredients to help you recreate the dishes and dining experiences of Jane Austen's characters and their contemporaries.

Mehso-so

Jane Austen wrote & published most of her works during the Regency Period (1811-1820) & this book gives us a snapshot of the type of food that those who were quite well off would have been eating in this period. With recipes taken from the time, alongside quotations & short sections on different aspects of Georgian dining, this is a pleasant accompaniment to Austen's novels.

OutsmartYourShelf I enjoyed leafing through this one evening although it left me feeling a bit peckish. I quite liked the sound of syllabub (basically whipped cream flavoured with sherry or wine & fruit), & Bath buns, but being vegetarian, I wasn't so enamoured of the 'sweetbreads' or 'ox cheeks' recipes. Yuck! 10mo
OutsmartYourShelf One thing that really stood out to me though was how late into the evening/night they would eat - sometimes 1am. Seems like a recipe for indigestion & acid reflux to me. It's a light, fun read but I'm not sure that I will be attempting any of the recipes. 3⭐

This is a collection of recipes inspired by the novels and letters of Jane Austen, adapted by the author into contemporary versions. A few friends got together to celebrate all things Regency, Romance, and with comestibles selected from the book recently, and we cooked Bath Buns, Herb Pie, Spiced Mushrooms, Venison (substituted with beef) in White Wine, Buttered Apple Tart, and my contribution, Mrs Austen‘s Pudding. ⬇️

erzascarletbookgasm We even played a Regency Quiz! All great fun, even if we‘re all masked up when not eating! Recipes rating 6/10 3y
erzascarletbookgasm Also tagging #PemberLittens who may be interested in the book. @sprainedbrain 3y

Both books are pretty and nice. Tea with Jane Austen seems to be a smaller version of 'Dinner', with the same recipes, only the ones involved with 'tea' being picked up. #PemberLittens

I found my Mr Darcy cookbook, it wasn‘t packed! 🙌🏽🙌🏽

And just in time to look up the white 🥣 mentioned in Chapter 11, apparently a creamy chicken soup that is a highlight of ball suppers. This recipe uses veal bones, a boiling fowl with giblets, ham, and anchovies. #PemberLittens

MicrobeMom Interesting! I always assumed it was a white bean soup. Anchovies? 🤷‍♀️ 4y
alisiakae @MicrobeMom I have no idea if this is a regency era recipe, or just inspired by the regency era, but when I looked it up white soup is described as a creamy chicken soup. I wondered at the anchovies too, and if they were hard to come by in England at that time. 4y
Lcsmcat I found a recipe online, adapted from a period cookbook. See my post from yesterday. It has all the ingredients you mentioned, and sugared almonds! 4y

These recipes are inspired by Jane Austen‘s letters + novels. Many of the recipes are reworkings from cookbooks from that time. For each section, she includes excepts from Austen‘s letters/novels.

This is a lovely cookbook with a cloth cover, thick matte pages, + numerous color photos. There are informative two pages descriptions on things like mealtimes (General Tilney), servants, table arrangements. The best recipes are the deserts and breads.

CoffeeCatsBooks Also, when I was ordering this, it looked like the publisher is putting out a new blue hardcover edition, so I am not sure if that one will also have the cloth cover. 5y

These are Baked Compote Apples. The Bates‘ twice-baked apples 🍎 would have been left for 2-3 nights in a baker‘s cooling brick oven, but these can be made in a conventional oven.

A cookbook based on the works of #janeausten ? Yes please. Combines my two best loves of books and food.
.
Which got me to thinking, what book you love would make for a terrible recipe book?.
.
The fall of the soufflé of Usher? The Tell-tale Tart? Fear and Lemoncake in Las Vegas? Of Mice and Meringues? Let me know your tasty offerings ?.
