Raymie Nightingale | Kate DiCamillo
109 posts | 128 read | 3 reading | 75 to read
Raymie Clarke has come to realize that everything, absolutely everything, depends on her. And she has a plan. If Raymie can win the Little Miss Central Florida Tire competition, then her father, who left town two days ago with a dental hygienist, will see Raymie's picture in the paper and (maybe) come home. To win, not only does Raymie have to do good deeds and learn how to twirl a baton; she also has to contend with the wispy, frequently fainting Louisiana Elefante, who has a show-business background, and the fiery, stubborn Beverly Tapinski, whos determined to sabotage the contest. But as the competition approaches, loneliness, loss, and unanswerable questions draw the three girls into an unlikely friendship and challenge each of them to come to the rescue in unexpected ways.

Another #BookSpinBingo space marked off which gives me two more bingos! @TheAromaofBooks

Like most of DiCamillo's books, this one is heartwarming, sweet, and a delightful read. Although her books are written for middle-grade, I find that they are wonderful for readers of all ages.

This story surrounds the budding friendship of three unlikely friends who discover they need each other more than they thought.

Kate DiCamillo is always a good choice, and this sweet, short MG novel is no exception. Raymie is a sweet, hopeful girl aiming to win the Little Miss Central Florida Tire contest so that her father will see her picture in the paper and come back home. On this quest she meets two unlikely compatriots who are struggling with their own hurts. This is a beautiful exploration of hope & friendship & plans gone awry...and rescue from unlikely places.

This book. This author. I CRIED. I haven‘t read a Kate DiCamillo book in YEARS and I don‘t really know why. Flora and Ulysses, the Tale Of Desperaux, The Magicians Elephant,& The Miraculous Journey Of Edward Tulane. Is it because I was afraid of the emotions that always come from reading any of her books? I really don‘t know, but I have MISSED her writing. Whatever you do, read this book.

MrBook Great review! 5y
LeahBergen I just read Edward Tulane and 😭. 5y
Emily92Bibliophile @LeahBergen that books WRECKS your emotional abilities. I haven‘t read that since my college Children lit class in undergrad in 2014, but that story still has stayed with me. Other than Rowling, DiCamillo is the most strongest influence on my life as a reader. 5y

This RF book is a National Book award finalist that deals with loss and separation. It is a story of Raymie Clarke so wishes to compete in the Little Miss Central Florida 1975 pageant, in hopes of gaining her run away fathers attentions. Through baton twirling, she meets Louisiana and Beverly and they go through many nerve wracking adventures together. This is the true story of friendship. This would be great to use for an AS of Kate DiCamillo!

MaddyJ https://create.piktochart.com/output/44786619-kate-dicamillo - My author study of Kate DiCamillo to share with students! UDL principle 5.1 (Use multiple media for communication) and EL 17 (Provide contextual support through audio visuals, models, demonstrations, realia, body language and facial expressions) would be covered by using this book and Piktochart to present an AS. There is also a book trailer for Raymie Nightingale in the above AS. 5y
DrSpalding I know I said this after you performed your author study, but I truly believe you should include a video of your baton twirling skills! The kids would be blown away. 5y

More like Winn-Dixie but less like Despereaux. Quite dreary for a children‘s book. Character development was very brusque and forced. For a couple hour investment it wasn‘t hugely disappointing.

This was sweet and surprisingly funny at times, while also touching on some heavier topics like abusive/neglectful parents, anxiety, and loss. I liked how the three girls come together to help each other and we see them all as multifaceted characters. I did think the dialogue was sometimes a bit mature for 10 year olds (even taking imitating grownups into account) & wish we‘d gotten a bit more resolution. But overall a sweet little book. 3/5 ⭐️

⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2 I didn't plan it this way but I ended up doing some season hopping. This was a surprisingly hard prompt as I have very few books gifted to me. Most people just opt for gift cards. I did manage to find this in my stacks. I'm a huge DiCamillo fan and I enjoyed this but I don't think it's as good as her others. Raymie decides to enter a beauty pageant in hopes to win her father back home.

Cinfhen Glad you found a book! If other‘s have problems with this prompt a book from the library will be fine...that‘s a gift, no?!?!! 6y

#AbbaInAugust Day 19: From Fats‘ review - In the #SummerNightCity of 1975, Raymie Nightingale tells the story of Raymie Clarke whose dad abandoned Raymie and her mom to be with a dental hygienist just two days prior. The chapters in Raymie Nightingale are short. Reading the book felt like peeling an onion one layer at a time. Full review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-eD8

Three 10-year old girls are thrown together one summer when they joined the Little Miss Central Florida contest. Each believes winning will solve all their problems. A lovely but sad story about their growing friendships, how they rely on each other and find courage. With reality themes like betrayal and abandonment, the story manages to lift our hearts and has its tender moments.

The realistic fiction novel is too real! Dicamillo perfect captures the anxiety, depression and hoplessness we all face at time. She simultaneously perfectly illustrates the difference a single experience can make(like a baton twirling class) in changing the course of our lives. This HF was somewhat a slow read. Not a bad read, by any means, but perhaps a bit mundane and less than engaging. Kate DiCamillo is a good author but fell short of our expectations on this one. A good addition to her other books in your classroom library if nothing else.

This HF is about 3 preteen friends and how they navigate through the hardships of life together & prepare for a beauty pageant. This story takes place in Central Florida which makes it interesting & relatable to readers. Although the book was cute, I personally found it to be slow and got bored with parts but it was still good book. A group discussion guide found here: http://www.candlewick.com/book_files/0763681172.bdg.1.pdf #UCFLAE3414su17

Elizabethhunt96 It's a shame it's slow. Can I ask why you particularly thought so? The topic sounds really interesting to me and I like that it takes place in central Florida! (edited) 7y
SamanthaPuglisi @Elizabethhunt96 I thought the topic was interesting as well and was so excited to read the book but as the chapters progressed I just found the story to be slow and dry. It may have just been that the author's particular style didn't click with me, but my group members had similar feelings. It wasn't a bad book by any means I just wouldn't ever assign it as a class reading because I don't think that it would be engaging enough. 7y
DrSpalding I am picked upon then discussion guide at ILA on Sunday. I agree with your comments @SamanthaPuglisi as I felt the same way while reading this title. 7y
