Wordslut: A Feminist Guide to Taking Back the English Language | Amanda Montell
A brash, enlightening, and wildly entertaining feminist look at gendered language and the way it shapes us, written with humor and playfulness that challenges words and phrases and how we use them. I get so jazzed about the future of feminism knowing that Amanda Montells brilliance is rising up and about to explode worldwide.Jill Soloway The word bitch conjures many images for many people, but it is most often meant to describe an unpleasant woman. Even before its usage to mean a female canine, bitch didnt refer to gender at allit originated as a gender-neutral word meaning genitalia. A perfectly innocuous word devolving into a female insult is the case for tons more terms, including hussywhich simply meant housewifeor slut, which meant an untidy person and was also used to describe men. These words are just a few among historys many English slurs hurled at women. Amanda Montell, reporter and feminist linguist, deconstructs languagefrom insults and cursing, gossip, and catcalling to grammar and pronunciation patternsto reveal the ways it has been used for centuries to keep women and other marginalized genders from power. Ever wonder why so many people are annoyed when women talk with vocal fry or use the word like as a filler? Or why certain gender-neutral terms stick and others dont? Or where stereotypes of how women and men speak come from in the first place? Montell effortlessly moves between history, science, and popular culture to explore these questions and moreand how we can use the answers to effect real social change. Montells irresistible humor shines through, making linguistics not only approachable but both downright hilarious and profound, demonstrated in chapters such as: Slutty Skanks and Nasty Dykes: A Comprehensive List of Gendered Insults How to Embarrass the Shit Out of People Who Try to Correct Your Grammar Fuck it: An Ode to Cursing While Female Cyclops, Panty Puppet, Bald Headed Bastard and 100+ Other Things to Call Your Genitalia Montell effortlessly moves between history and popular culture to explore these questions and more. Wordslut gets to the heart of our language, marvels at its elasticity, and sheds much-needed light into the biases that shadow women in our culture and our consciousness.

Absolutely loved this book! I have been looking at the way I communicate lately. Like what types of language I use when I speak with others and/or about myself and my surroundings. Also, looking at how words I choose provides others with all sorts of opinions about me.

Been a bit hard, though, coming from a Spanish-speaking family.

#JubilantJulyReadathon

Wordslut was on my TBR before I read Cultish & I finally finished it. That it took so long is because of a lack of time & other books jumping the line & not the book as I enjoyed it. I love language & its origins & Montell‘s witty irreverent exploration of words, their devolution & gender bias is informative & engaging. Frustrating to read especially in recent times, but ultimately a hopeful look at feminism & empowerment.

I had hoped to finish this in June but this week has not been good for reading. I‘m about 40% in & enjoying it. So interesting! Hope to finish it over the weekend. I did sneak in half a chapter with my favorite desk breakfast of fried rice with an over-easy egg on top from the local diner by work.

Looking forward to finishing the day & enjoying the long Independence Day weekend. I took Tuesday off too.🎉

This was lighthearted and it had charm because Montell is very open with the reader (though sometimes that made me wonder if it wasn‘t getting too subjective for nonfiction…) A lot of what was presented here wasn‘t new information, but it definitely deepened my understanding of the topics presented and the history behind them. My favorite parts of this were the ones where she suggested future steps for changing our language usage.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I enjoyed this one too, she definitely made it a fun read. 12mo

This was actually not at all my understanding of people who are two-spirit, but so far this book is really well researched so I‘m confused. A quick online search didn‘t answer my question. Do any Littens know if it‘s true that ALL two-spirit people are actually AMAB?

KatieDid927 No that‘s absolutely not correct. Not all Two-Spirit people are AMAB. Shit, I follow a couple on Insta that aren‘t. 12mo

This was a entertaining, interesting, no-holds-barred collection of feminist essays about how language relates to gender and sexual identity. Chapters tackle issues like swearing, how the ways we speak impact the impression we make and how much respect we get, degrading language, how we talk about our genitals, and much more.

This book was fabulous!! I only wish it had been longer- it left me with so much curiosity. It was a fascinating look at how English is commonly spoken currently, the origins of our common speech, how it‘s been warped by sexism and how we can reclaim the language as a whole. It covered cursing, gay and lesbian voices, pet names, harassment, and the interruptions and demeaning situations women (but also other non white, cis gendered people) face.

I found it really interesting, though the style was much more conversational and informal than I expected (probably because I‘ve read a fair bit of drier psycholinguistic stuff). Lots of food for thought and I‘ve been enjoying the discussions. Recommend for any word nerds and feminists out there.

I can trace my feminist roots to a 🤯 gender & communication class in college that includes discussion of how so many insults (at least in English) can essentially be traced back to demeaning women. This book made me think about how deeply personal language can be. When discussing an inclusive second person plural, Montell mentions the word “folks.” I‘m not comfortable saying that word — it sounds odd coming from me — but when Barack Obama says it, it sounds right. I prefer “y‘all,” but that can‘t always be swapped out for “folks.” Some suggested replacements are just awkward or take longer to say — Mx for Mr., Miss, or Mrs. #SheSaid

KathyWheeler The discussion on the difference between “woman” and “female” was especially interesting. I had no idea it was that complicated. And gender! It‘s very confusing but enlightening. 1y
Reagan This book is the best. She‘s amazing. 1y
KathyWheeler @Reagan I am loving it. Weird thing is, I started it a few months ago and put it down because I got bored. Picked it up again for this read along and now can‘t figure out why I was bored the first time. 1y

Very interesting! I‘d recommend this book to people who enjoy info about words, their origins, and speech patterns of different demographics. It was based on a combination of research and anecdotes, I‘d say. I didn‘t agree with all of Montell‘s points but I definitely found a lot of food for thought! Some of it echoed what I remember learning in a Linguistic Anthropology class 20 years ago, but some was more recent/relevant.

A weird month of reading as I had so little time to read..... and a lot more audio and nonfiction than I usually do....
Wordslut, World of Wonders and In the Kitchen were all fantastic in print, and the two kids books and the Poirot I listened to were really fun! 🎧💕
The McEwan was weird and a bit disappointing as I usually love him, but it was a so-so for me...
The Downton cookbook has so much great historical detail, loved it.💕

TrishB @Megabooks I think if we hadn‘t lived on top of each other for 24 hours a day for the last 7-8 months it wouldn‘t feel so weird. But I‘m very glad I‘ve got my furry friend tonight 🐶❤️ 2y
Megabooks @TrishB oh for sure! I know it‘s going to be a hard adjustment living by myself again when it happens, especially after 2020. 2y
Cathythoughts Thank goodness for Sansa ...🐶❤️ 2y
MicheleinPhilly Happy to hear about hubby‘s job though! I‘m sure Sansa will keep you warm! 😘 2y
TrishB @Cathythoughts exactly ❤️🐶 2y
TrishB @MicheleinPhilly it‘s a relief at the moment. Sansa was very happy to sleep next to me 😁 2y

#weeklyforecast
Took pic earlier when didn‘t know I‘d finish True Story this afternoon. The rest of this weeks choices will come from the others. Bit anxious about Only Good Indians as I read a review saying it had a lot of animal cruelty? Those that have read is it that bad, can I skip those pages?

Megabooks Enjoy Wordslut! It‘s fantastic. 2y
TrishB @Megabooks think that‘s going to be next. My daughter brought me it for my birthday 👍🏻 2y
BarbaraBB Great forecast. 2y

Reggie Um, the whole story hinges on a hunting incident. But I think most animal rights people would root for the supernatural in here. 🤷🏽 2y
TrishB @Reggie thanks 😘 it was a gift so I had no idea really what it was about. At least I am forewarned. 2y
Reggie Also, just thought of you cause I just read that the U.K. launched its first vegan butcher shop. Lol, which sounds crazy but it‘s a step forward right? 2y
Cinfhen Lots of good options... 2y
Oryx I struggled with Good Indians for that reason. I found it really unpleasant - I struggled through but I actually wish I hadn't. 2y
TrishB @Reggie I‘ll have a look for that! 2y
TrishB @Oryx thanks- it will probably be on the pile for a while now! I‘m not desperate for reading stuff. 2y

Pickpick

It‘s been a good time to #reread print books since my dad has been home. Lots of changes!

So glad so many Littens have enjoyed this feminist look at the English language!! If you haven‘t read it, this book covers everything from swearing like a lady to vocal fry and uptalk. Highly recommend!!

Cinfhen Not sleeping again??? 2y
Megabooks @Cinfhen I‘m changing medicines right now too in addition to the dad stuff, so my sleep schedule has been off some nights. Fucking US insurance! 2y
Cinfhen Insurance in general is the BIGGEST SCAM / such greedy crooks 2y

Cinfhen Hope you find the right cocktail xx 2y
Sace Ugh. Insurance is a nightmare! Hope sleep schedules get regulated soon! 2y
Chrissyreadit I‘m desperately hopeful for Single payer insurance and a system that puts people over profit. Hope you are able to get rest. 2y
Chrissyreadit Also I wonder if this would be a fun audio? 2y
Megabooks @Sace thanks! 2y
Megabooks @Chrissyreadit same! I‘m definitely hoping for a better insurance situation post election. Others have done Wordslut as audio and enjoyed it! 2y
Sharpeipup I just got it from the library! 2y
Megabooks @Sharpeipup awesome! Enjoy! 2y
