Merry Adventures of Robin Hood (Revised)
Merry Adventures of Robin Hood (Revised) | Howard Pyle
"No archer ever lived that could speed a gray goose shaft with such skill and cunning as his, nor were there ever such yeomen as the sevenscore merry men that roamed with him through the greenwood shades. Right merrily they dwelt within the depths of Sherwood Forest, suffering neither care nor want, but passing the time in merry games of archery or bouts of cudgel play, living upon the King's venison, washed down with draughts of ale of October brewing."Not only Robin himself but all the band were outlaws and dwelt apart from other men, yet they were beloved by the country people round about, for no one ever came to Jolly Robin for help in time of need and went away again with an empty fist."Pyle takes the reader along with Robin Hood and his band on their merry adventures. They tell of Little John, Will Scarlet, and Allan a Dale, and how they came to join the band; how Robin Hood escaped the arrows of the grim Sheriff of Nottingham, and later revenged himself; what happened at the court of the gentle Queen Eleanor. The tales go on to tell of Little John as a barefoot friar, and Robin Hood as a beggar; the chase by the quick-tempered Henry II; a visit from the good King Richard of the Lion's Heart; and all the other exploits of Robin Hood and his band. This is the best version of the classic stories and the only edition that reproduces both the original (1883) Pyle text and the famous Pyle illustrations in their entirety, including the page decorations. A favorite for generations, it will be welcomed again by parents and children alike in this sturdy paperback edition.

This was a different read. It wasn‘t like the stories I heard as a kid. It was interesting to read new stories about the famous Robin Hood. The ending was not what I expected. Still overall it was a good read. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I remember liking this children‘s story. The adventures of the famous outlaw who lived in Sherwood #Forest near the town of Nottingham, who stole from the rich to give to the poor.

1.5-2🌟 First, let me say that I really like Robin Hood stories. I like the legend and I like the idea of humanitarianism. It is from these stories that I first came to believe that the wealth of a nation should be the wealth of the entire nation not just the select few. However, I was not a great fan of this particular telling of it. Pyle talks to the reader as if they are both travelling with Robin or spying on him. (cont‘d below)

GingerAntics Not sure this is really for children with the length of the chapters, but perhaps this is something that has changed since this book was originally written in 1883. The language is very formal and antiquated for modern readers. The approach to the story telling is also very dry. I had to push through the vast majority of this book. I would have preferred a more modern telling of the Robin Hood tales. 19th century English is just so harsh to me. 6y
GingerAntics It was equally interesting and annoying to see how Pyle used this legend to further Christian religious teachings and social expectations of piety. Clearly people in this period were not concerned with misappropriation. Never mind how disturbing it was that Pyle suggested that being hit hard enough would wipe out one‘s sins. 🙄 There are also way too many songs that are way too long in this telling. 6y
GingerAntics Perhaps they aren‘t so daunting in writing, but in the audiobook there were songs that went on for 10 full minutes, sung in a monotonous tune by the narrator, Christopher Cazenore. It was painful, and if I‘m honest I skipped passed any song that went beyond a few repeated melody lines. I actually found that I could hit the “15 secsonds ahead” button, sometimes multiple times, and still didn‘t miss anything or get lost. (edited) 6y

GingerAntics Too wordy in so many places, but the few place where I wanted more words, there were surprisingly few words to be had. It was skipping from chapter to chapter. This is a great legend turned into 19th century tripe. This may be an unpopular opinion, but I‘ve read better versions that were older than this. I had to force myself to finish the whole thing.

Texreader Oh ugh! Especially the singing! Really!!! 6y
GingerAntics @Texreader yeah, it was bad. It would be like taking the first two lines of twinkle twinkle little star and repeating them over and over, with different words, for ten minutes. 🙄💥🔫 6y

It‘s very obvious that this book was written in 1883. The language itself is kind of antiquated and can get frustrating at times. I am determined to finish this book despite the drier nature of the writing. Lots of thous and thines. I even skipped past two different 5+ minute long songs that the narrator insisted on singing to the same monotonous, mundane melody.

My choice for a classic for #agameoffavorites is a double choice, my mother had a gorgeous copy of both the tagged book and Howard Pyles “King Arthur”. I was OBSESSED with the illustrations and read both books over and over.
My interesting fact about Pyle: he also wrote and illustrated a book about Pirates, and he is credited for basically inventing the “pirate costume” we know today. @ErinSueG #robinhood #kingarthur #pirates

This is an illustration from a vintage copy of Robin Hood that I pored over as a kid.
