Abarat with Bonus Material
Abarat with Bonus Material | Clive Barker
47 posts | 88 read | 36 to read
Discover the magical and illuminating world of Clive Barkers bestselling Abarat. This ebook also includes excerpts from the sequel, Abarat: Days of Magic, Nights of War, and the long-anticipated third installment: Abarat: Absolute Midnight. It begins in the most boring place in the world: Chickentown, U.S.A. There lives Candy Quackenbush, her heart bursting for some clue as to what her future might hold. When the answer comes, it's not one she expects. Out of nowhere comes a wave, and Candy, led by a man called John Mischief (whose brothers live on the horns on his head), leaps into the surging waters and is carried away. Where? To the Abarat: a vast archipelago where every island is a different hour of the day, from The Great Head that sits in the mysterious twilight waters of Eight in the Evening, to the sunlit wonders of Three in the Afternoon, where dragons roam, to the dark terrors of Gorgossium, the island of Midnight, ruled over by the Prince of Midnight himself, Christopher Carrion. Candy has a place in this extraordinary world: She is here to help save the Abarat from the dark forces that are stirring at its heart. Forces older than Time itself, and more evil than anything Candy has ever encountered.

What an odd, quirky confection of a story which is very much, as reviewers have said, a cross between Alice in Wonderland & The Lion, the Witch, & the Wardrobe with emphasis on the weird, head scratching wackiness of Wonderland. As for a plot, a girl travels from her town in Minnesota to a fantastical archipelago where each island is a different time of day. There, she runs into a great evil & learns she‘s the key to whatever is coming next.

Dove deep into my TBR and just grabbed for my next read. This is what wound up in my hand. This is my first by Barker and I have no idea what to expect…and I‘ve had it long enough I don‘t remember why I got it in the first place. 😬🤷‍♀️ I‘ve seen good reviews so 🤞 it‘s a good read.

I'm not someone who usually intentionally #DNF's books, but I'm doing it now. This is just one of those MG/YA books that doesn't appeal to me as an adult. The writing is good, but the story isn't offering me anything I haven't gotten from other books over the years. I'm giving it a So-So instead of a Bail because this mostly an audience mismatch, but figure even a well-read teen could have the same issues, so it still feels fair to rate it at all.

The Abarat #audiobook is super frustrating, track breaks have no relation to chapter breaks whatsoever. Is this just the #cloudLibrary version or is the audiobook just like that?

I know this is fantasy, and I know this is young adult. This gives the author free reign to create a fictional world and incredibly unique characters. But, honestly, some sections of this book read like someone having fun stringing words together. There is a story. There is a world. And there is substance. But some of it is just a little too much. Anyone else feel this way? #whatdidIjustread #newdimension #fantasy #mixedemotions 🤔😱

#tarottakeover #death Clive Barker always writes novels where broad sweeping changes occur. Some good, some bad. But Miss Candy Quackenbush from Chickentown, Minnesota has her entire life flipped upside down when she discovers Abarat and is reborn into someone much braver and with a far bigger purpose than she would have ever expected. This is one of the most magical, beautiful storybooks ever.

Underrated book appreciation post! Abarat has always been one of my favorite series and not many people that I‘ve talked to have read it or even heard of it. All of the books are feature painting by the author and the world is so amazing! I wish more people could appreciate this series. What is a series you wish more people knew of?

Scott_BookInvasion I‘ve heard a lot of good things about this. I don‘t read many series books that aren‘t comical/humorous - Magic 2.0 by Scott Meyer, Space Team by Barry J Hutchinson, Critical Failures by Robert Bevan 6y

"Perhaps a wiser eye than hers would be able to read tomorrow in tonight's stars, but where was the fun in that? It was better not to know. Better to be alive in the Here and the Now--in this bright, laughing moment--and let the Hours to come take care of themselves."

I'm a day late! Abarat has some of the best illustrations and an amazing story. Clive Barker does YA almost better than anyone else!

3/5 ⭐ Really enjoyed the worldbuilding & fantastical elements. (I don't think there's a more delightful place name than Yebba Dim Day. 😄) Probably would have liked it even better when I was younger. Prose presented events & creatures in a beautiful and engaging way. However, there's not much dimension to the characters or plot beyond the interesting world, so I won't be continuing the series. Thanks @briary for the #projectTBR rec! #projectnew

"For some reason, the doodles that she had drawn in her workbook came back into her mind. Only this time, instead of being black lines on gray, recycled paper, they were bright in her mind; very bright. And all kinds of colors, the way the sun appeared in your mind if you looked at it for a moment and then closed your eyes. Dozens of little suns: green and red and gold; then colors, too, that you couldn't even name.

#projectnew #projectTBR

hissingpotatoes That was the way the lines looked in Candy's mind's eye.

And they were moving. The wavy lines were rolling across the darkness inside her skull, rolling and breaking, the brilliant colors bursting into arabesques of white and silver."

This entire scene was written so well it was like I was watching a movie. I could sense the heartbeat-metronome getting louder over the thematic contrast between Candy's thoughts and the reality of the classroom as she blooms into color alongside the lines in her mind. So, so good.

I didn't realize I had an ARC of Abarat (have no recollection where or when I got it). I don't like reading ARCs because I feel compelled to read the final version, and I don't have time or inclination to reread books that may or may not be 90% the same. I prefer to experience the final version. So I'm reading a library ebook copy and following the illustrations in the ARC as I go.

The world of Abarat is very dreamlike. I feel like not many people have heard of this series. It is incredible, similar to Alice in Wonderland in which the main character is transported to an unbelievable world. The books also feature artwork created by the author.

Cliffhangers... I'd rather jump off a cliff than read or suggest series that are not completed again. Two names : Michel Folco and Clive Barker. Both wrote amazing first books that ended with a to be continued. One took 6 years of going no it's not published yet ad nauseam to patrons. One is not even now completed in French. Dante's Hell for cliffhangers. George R R Martin who? #maybookflowers #cliffhangers

He had not had pleasant experiences where love was concerned. It could break your heart, if you weren't careful. It could make you feel so lost, so confused, and so worthless that life didn't seem worth living. This wasn't something he knew from books; these were the bitter lessons of his life.

My #TBT book is Abarat, the first book in Clive Barker's young adult fantasy/horror series. Written for his daughter, each book (three so far) is filled with Barker's artwork. The downside: he's taking his time writing, and there are two more books in the series, so who knows when it'll be complete.
