Two Girls Down
Two Girls Down: A Novel | Louisa Luna
160 posts | 149 read | 193 to read
Opening this book is like arming a bomb--the suspense is relentless and the payoff is spectacular. Lead character Alice Vega is sensational--I want to see lots more of her.--Lee Child, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Jack Reacher series As addictive, cinematic, and binge-worthy a narrative as The Wire and The Killing, Two Girls Down introduces Louisa Luna as a thriller writer of immense talent and verve. When two young sisters disappear from a strip mall parking lot in a small Pennsylvania town, their devastated mother hires an enigmatic bounty hunter, Alice Vega, to help find the girls. Immediately shut out by a local police department already stretched thin by budget cuts and the growing OxyContin and meth epidemic, Vega enlists the help of a disgraced former cop, Max Caplan. Cap is a man trying to put the scandal of his past behind him and move on, but Vega needs his help to find the girls, and she will not be denied. With little to go on, Vega and Cap will go to extraordinary lengths to untangle a dangerous web of lies, false leads, and complex relationships to find the girls before time runs out, and they are gone forever.

I really fell behind on my August reading (and probably life in general). I am still working on the roll #28 (tagged) for August's #Roll100, which I am enjoying. I am also more than halfway through Fingersmith for August's #AuthorAMonth. Hoping to read a lot today and tomorrow.

I really enjoyed my first Louisa Luna novel. It‘s a bit of a spin on the classic crime novel. The central characters aren‘t cops, and this isn‘t a murder (or is it?). Luna pitches here complex, flawed characters perfectly- messy enough to be believable and compelling, but still likeable enough to keep you engaged in the outcome of the story. It‘s well-paced, with plenty of twists and turns. A lot to like here, it was a great holiday read.

I do enjoy Luna‘s thrillers featuring Alice Vega and this was a good one. Vega is a complex, troubled woman and you want her to succeed. Two young girls, Kylie and Bailey Brandt have disappeared and their grandmother hires Vega to find then. Vega hires Max Caplan, a former cop to help her with local issues. Their investigation leads to a pattern of a few other missing girls. The reason for their abduction is more horrible than we could imagine.

Loooooooved this one. I do love a traditional thriller/mystery with no psychological element. This was great. Vega did grate on me at first but I grew with her in the end.

Meh. This book dragged for me & the plot felt icky at times. I was surprised I didn‘t like it given the raving reviews about it, but I figure that‘s because a plot about two kidnapped young girls is not my jam. Live & learn. 📄: 369

Alice Vega tries to make sense of a fractured life by searching for children who have been taken from their homes and lives. Max Caplan works as a PI after resigning from the police department. Jamie Brandt‘s daughters, Kylie and Bailey have disappeared, seeming into thin air. What Cap and Vega find in their search is pure evil.

A great thriller!

Two young girls go missing from a shopping mall, and with the police department being overworked, the family recruits bounty hunter Alice Vega to help track down the girls. She then solicits the help of Max Caplin, a former officer to assist in the search.

A wide assortment of characters and lots of dark twists in this suspense novel, it was one that kept me guessing!

An enjoyable read!

Fantastic thriller! Alice Vega is an excellent lead—tough, smart, complicated. I loved taking this ride with her and partner Max. The plotting was on point but so was the development of every person Vega interacts with, no cliched, one dimensional “here‘s a good guy, here‘s a bad guy” characters. Every scene was set perfectly too, you are right in the action, every sense engaged. I look forward to diving into the next installment soon. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was a compelling book, and I was surprised by the ending! However, it‘s worth noting that there are several sensitive themes in this novel, so if you are easily upset by this type of thing and will dwell on it — like I am — it‘s probably best to skip it.

This book kept my interest and I definitely couldn‘t have guessed the ending. It had some problematic parts, but I liked that the protagonist is a hard female PI. However, I wouldn‘t recommend this on audio (the reader was great, but 80% of the character voices were very annoying albeit distinct).

This was a start-drinking-before-noon-on-a-Sunday ending. A damaged yet kickass female detective pairs up with a disgraced former cop to find two kidnapped girls. Edge of your seat action yet strong, descriptive storytelling from a new-to-me author. And those last 70 pages...get ready. Highly recommend. 4/5 ⭐️

Oh...and it‘s the first in a series, which in my world translates to “HERE TAKE MY MONEY.”

After I read The Janes, all I wanted to do was to read Louisa Luna‘s first book in this series. I wasn‘t disappointed. As a matter of fact, I wish I had read them in the correct order. Now I will wait, with great anticipation, for her third installment.

A good-enough mystery but there were some unnecessary elements (romantic connection) and some character action that just didn‘t make sense to me. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I did enjoy this mystery/thriller for the most part. I got bogged down in the middle as it slowed down and so many different characters were introduced. I also wasn‘t a fan of the romance in this. The chemistry was off. It didn‘t feel like it fit with the characters. The decision making in parts of this story too was not the best. All that aside, it was fast paced (mostly) and interesting.

TerriGreen This is high on my to read list. Did you audio this one? 5y
Tracyantoon @TerriGreen I did audio this. I thought she did a fantastic job, but I have seen quite a number of reviews on goodreads that found all her character voices a little over the top. 5y

After bailing on it *really* quickly last week, I gave this a second chance. It was better once Vega and Caps came in to the story, but it was overly long and fussy still. On the bright side, this is one less series for me to get sucked into. 😂

I'm only 3% in (24 minutes) and I can't get past the hateful mom. Should I stick with it (i.e. is the mom going to go away)? Are the bounty hunter and PI wildly entertaining?

I think the only thing I've bailed on sooner than this is Gone Girl.

Redwritinghood It‘s been awhile since I read it, but I remember being surprised how much I liked it by the end. It‘s not phenomenal, but I enjoyed it and I don‘t usually like books in this genre. 5y
JoyBlue @Redwritinghood Thanks for mentioning. I haven't returned it yet. I'll see if I'm desperate to try again in the next 20 days. 5y

Read this one based on a Sam Irby recommendation and was not disappointed. Not my preferred genre, I loved the characters, and the way the investigation unfolded. I was shocked by the ending, did not see it coming and yet it completely worked. The second Alice Vega book just came out and I will definitely be reading it. Great detective mystery thriller, kept me up waaaaay past my bedtime. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Just finished while waiting for my dr. appointment.

This was GREAT.

It's been a while since a #CrimeThiller has captivated me like this did. From the continuously twisty plotline to the unlikely yet perfectly paired PI duo of Cap & Vega, I couldn't stop listening. Hoping Luna will write more mysteries with Vega as her lead character. There's so much more to her mysterious background that I want to know!
