Kill the Farm Boy: The Tales of Pell
Kill the Farm Boy: The Tales of Pell | Kevin Hearne, Delilah S Dawson
In an irreverent new series in the tradition of Terry Pratchett novels and The Princess Bride, the New York Times bestselling authors of the Iron Druid Chronicles and Star Wars: Phasma reinvent fantasy, fairy tales, and floridly written feast scenes. Once upon a time, in a faraway kingdom, a hero, the Chosen One, was born . . . and so begins every fairy tale ever told. This is not that fairy tale. There is a Chosen One, but he is unlike any One who has ever been Chosened. And there is a faraway kingdom, but you have never been to a magical world quite like the land of Pell. There, a plucky farm boy will find more than he's bargained for on his quest to awaken the sleeping princess in her cursed tower. First there's the Dark Lord who wishes for the boy's untimely death . . . and also very fine cheese. Then there's a bard without a song in her heart but with a very adorable and fuzzy tail, an assassin who fears not the night but is terrified of chickens, and a mighty fighter more frightened of her sword than of her chain-mail bikini. This journey will lead to sinister umlauts, a trash-talking goat, the Dread Necromancer Steve, and a strange and wondrous journey to the most peculiar "happily ever after" that ever once-upon-a-timed.

I had a $30 B&an gift card from work (we get Kudo points to buy gift cards, I guess it‘s supposed to make us feel better about our crappy pay and useless raises).
Thankfully there were sales!
I bought the tagged book because I wanted to laugh out loud reading the back synopsis.
Of course I‘m going to get the John Lewis book.
I‘m weirdly into food history after watching the History Channel series ‘The Foods the Built America‘

Okay, but the GOAT tho😂 This book is like reading a Mel Brooks movie, all spoof. Similarly, I found the conceit wore thin at times, but overall the story hung together well and the characters were so appealingly likeable that I‘ll give it a pick. Extra points for the cutting insights on politics in the last quarter there.

Comic Fantasy isn't usually my genre of choice, so I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. Yes I could have done with much less poo and fart jokes, but I found the characters engaging, and the puns and wordplay kept me chuckling. I'd be willing to visit Pell again in the future.

This was a great break from heavy worldbuilding that gave me a few laughs but I will admit you can only have so many poop jokes before they are just not funny anymore (not that they were funny to begin with). The character building was great though. I loved Poltro and I will fight all the chickens in the world for that girl.

SAT words! Puns! Sexual innuendos!

A Farm Boy. A Dark Lord with a potbelly, tramp stamp, & bread making magic. A bumbling rogue. A talking goat. A human/rabbit hybrid bard. A 7-foot-tall lady-warrior in a chainmail bikini. A Sand Witch. One of them is the Chosen One.

It started out really fun but it got to be a bit much with all the jokes, aimless plot, & little character development. After much deliberation I'm giving this ⭐⭐⭐. ⬇️

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I have book 2 so I will read that to see if the series improves. This was my #bookspin pick and also satisfies the #sagittarius #readyoursign challenge prompt 9 as the ensemble provides us with an adventurous character, a creative character, and a strong-willed character. @TheAromaofBooks @Clwojick @Meaw_catlady 5y

Yay for another #bookmap 🤗
I finally finished my first book for the #readyoursign challenge. This book covers prompt #9: Read a book with a character that is adventurous, creative, or strong-willed. Since this covers a bit of an ensemble cast, all three traits were found in at least one of the characters with whom we are traveling. Official review to come.

This is my prospective #sagittarius #TBR for #readyoursign but I might swap out another light blue book if the mood hits. @Clwojick @Meaw_catlady

I committed to 5 books but I should be able to read more. These cover at least a few prompts:

Adventurous, creative, or strong-willed character
Topaz (color on cover)
Light Blue (color on cover)
Read between 5-10am
Fire (element in title)
Birth year & Sagittarius author

Clwojick I loved The Bookish Life of Nina Hill! Hope you do too ♥️ 5y

1. Probably Chuck Palahniuk, though Stephen King and Neil Gaiman are up there.

2. A flight of beer, a nice dinner, and a concert or play.

3. Never thought of it before. I guess a distinct settings I remember most would be in medieval times, or similar fantasy lands.

I don‘t DNF but I‘m skimming most the the last 75% 🥺 it just won‘t end and doesn‘t hold my attention. I had high hopes too, the beginning was funny and who doesn‘t love a talking 🐐 but it reminds me of Family Guy when a joke starts out funny and they let it go on wayyy too long and your like “really...?” Time to move on...

This book was so much fun. It‘s a fantasy adventure full of laughs, crazy characters and puns. A talking goat, a woman turned into a bunny, a very tall woman in a chain mail bikini, a rogue who can‘t rogue, and dark wizards. It‘s making fun of all the white man tropes in fantasy books.

Book 2 finished for #EasterExtravaganga

The idea of this book was intriguing and the humor made me chuckle. But the big problem was too much content thrown in too quickly. I wish we had lingered with characters or situations instead of running through multiple places so quickly I couldn‘t connect with any of them in particular.

Would recommend as a library read, not a full purchase price.
