Sad to say, my first book for #cloakanddaggerchristmas was kind of a dud. I figured any book blurbed by Olga Tokarczuk would be good, but I think something was lost in translation. The language felt stilted & the social nuances of late 19th-century Poland eluded me. Plus, a wee bit of misogyny might have crept into the portrayal of a bored housewife turned amateur sleuth as imagined by two men writing under a pseudonym. Still an old folks home 👇

merelybookish Is an ingenious setting for a murder. So many past lives and unexpected connections to investigate. This was for the Feliz Navidad prompt. Onwards and upwards! @Ruthiella 4mo
Ruthiella Sadly, author blurbs can‘t always be trusted. Sorry this was a dud, but here‘s hoping the next one is awesome! 🤞 4mo
jlhammar I read this a few years go and remember feeling the same. Hopefully you just got the lone dud out of the way! 4mo

Wow! Can we appreciate this cover. 😍 Stumbled upon this gem on Libby.

Gonna start this audiobook. It's a historical-fiction mystery with a female heroin detective. The story is set in 19th century Poland.

I love Agatha Christie and Shelock Holmes so I should enjoy this one.

DGRachel Zofia is delightful! Enjoy! 1y

This was a great cosy mystery, set in nineteenth century Cracow.
The MC is a fan of mystery novels, and when a resident of the local retirement home goes missing she sets about trying to solve the case.

Hi to my #lmpbc group members! @Kayla.Adriena @shellleigh33 @sharread The choosing books part gets me excited every time! Here are some books I‘ve been meaning to read. Let me know if any look good to you! 🤷🏻‍♀️

See All 16 Comments
LiteraryinLawrence One Two Three is obviously the full book, not a small excerpt. But when I tagged the full book it didn‘t have a summary. The book is about 400 pages. 2y
Kayla.Adriena Gosh they're all so different from one another! I haven't read any of them so whichever you choose is fine with me! I read all the descriptions and if I were to pick top two would be the House of Silk or One Two Three . How cool is it that they let him write a Sherlock Holmes book?! 2y
shellleigh33 I vote for Instructions for Dancing or One Two Three bc they have been on my radar but they all sound great! 2y
sharread They all sound great. I'm up for Instructions for Dancing or One. My second would be House of Silk then One, Two, Three. 😄 Someone needs to be a tie breaker. 🎃 2y
LiteraryinLawrence @sharread Just to clarify, what‘s the difference between One and One, Two, Three in your comment? Want to make sure I‘m understanding! 2y
sharread @LiteraryinLawrence The 400 pages and the plot bored me from the excerpt. But if everyone wants that one I'm open to reading it. 😁❤ 2y
LiteraryinLawrence @sharread No, sorry. That‘s fine not to read that one. My question was, when you said you‘d like to read “Instructions for Dancing or One”, what did that mean? 2y
sharread @LiteraryinLawrence 🤣🤣🤣 It was a brain fart sorry. It was a typo. 2y
LiteraryinLawrence Ok, so for my pick it‘s down to Instructions for Dancing versus House of Silk. I‘m excited either way! Which do you prefer? @Kayla.Adriena @shellleigh33 @sharread 2y
shellleigh33 Instructions for dancing is my vote 2y
Kayla.Adriena Instructions for Dancing 💃 works for me 2y

Set in 19th century Cracow, the setting and information about place and time are the shining stars of this mystery. Main character Zofia is not entirely likable and her conclusions in solving the murder are not ones the reader could ever discern on their own. It‘s an interesting premise made just a touch too convoluted. Full review at https://booknaround.blogspot.com/2021/03/review-mrs-mohr-goes-missing-by-maryla....

Another historical mystery! Mrs Mohr goes missing is set in 1890s Poland and rich in historical detail. When residents of Helcel House die under suspicious circumstances, Zofia takes it upon herself to investigate, her professor husband none the wiser. The solution was clever and I really enjoyed the ending.

Zofia is excellent - she's both desperate to fit in to society & at the same time determine not live in the shadow of her husband. She's a refreshing mix of Poiret & Columbo with a distinctly feminine sense of wiliness & world vision. I loved her admiration of Poe & the rich depiction of 19th C Cracow. Historically interesting & wonderfully concluded - it just takes a little brain power to keep up with the different countesses & baroness!

This is an absolutely delightful historical mystery. Social climber Zofia Turbotynska discovers a knack for detective work when a resident of the local care home goes missing. I adore Zofia and her 19th century Polish manners. She has a flair for the dramatic, as evidenced by the Big Reveal. Her performance is worthy of Poirot. 🤣 I also appreciated that there is no gore. It‘s a classic mystery, not a modern thriller, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I really enjoyed this mystery. It felt very Agatha Christie but I loved that it was set in 1880s Cracow - a place a don‘t know much about. The main character was well developed and really entertaining to follow as an amateur detective. If the two authors write another I‘ll be happy to read it. This was a #myTBR recommendation and I don‘t think I‘d have found it otherwise. 👏🏻 #getTBR

What an awesome novel. Set in 1880s Cracow, you learn about customs of society. I didn't expect the twist. Zofia, the main character is so real, you laugh at the same time you roll your eyes at her thoughts. There was a chapter in which the characters decorated family tombs on All Saints Day and since that is the precursor for Halloween, I'm going to use it. 2 hours #OutstandingOctober #BookSpinBingo #October20in4 #Screamathon #lmpbc
