The stunning sequel to Maria Dahvana Headley s critically acclaimed Magonia tells the story of one girl who must make an impossible choice between two families, two homes and two versions of herself.Aza Ray is back on earth. Her boyfriend, Jason, is overjoyed. Her family is healed. She s living a normal life, or as normal as it can be if you ve spent the past year dying, waking up on a sky ship, and discovering that your song can change the world. As in, not normal. Part of Aza still yearns for the clouds, no matter how much she loves the people on the ground. When Jason s paranoia over Aza s safety causes him to make a terrible mistake, Aza finds herself a fugitive in Magonia, tasked with opposing her radical, bloodthirsty, recently escaped mother, Zal Quel, and her singing partner, Dai. She must travel to the edge of the world in search of a legendary weapon, the Flock, in a journey through fire and identity that will transform her forever.Told in Maria Headley s trademark John Green meets Neil Gaiman voice, Aerie is sure to satisfy the many readers who can t wait to return to the spellbinding world of Magonia."

This was a beautifully written book. It was fun to finally read this book. It definitely had my heart racing at a few points. It put a few smiles on my face. I would definitely recommend this duology. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Is anyone doing a reading challenge this year? I'm doing the Read Harder Challenge that I found on Book Riot- kind of a slow start for me 😓
Any suggestions for this list?
#bookriot #readharder2018

sherrynuts I read Red Sparrow for a book set in BRIC country (Russia) and The Wedding Date for a romance by/about a person of color. I enjoyed both, but did have few issues with Red Sparrow. 6y
sherrynuts Oh! And Binti for a sci-fi novel with a female protagonist by a female author. It's probably one of my favorite recent reads. 6y
VelvetSpade I second The Wedding Date. Also I read I‘ll Be Gone in the Night for True crime (& it counts as a posthumous book as well if you‘re allowing doubling up) 6y
See All 17 Comments
AWahle I did Britt-Marie was here for female protagonist over 60. Americanah or Homegoing are good for colonial or post-colonial literature. There's also a Goodreads group for this challenge with lots of suggestions! 6y
sherrynuts @AWahle how did you like Britt-Marie Was Here? I second Americanah. 6y
AWahle @sherrynuts I listened to the audio and enjoyed it. Not as much as My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry though. The narrator was awesome. 6y
DGRachel I normally hate everything Oprah picks, but I‘m pretty sure she picked The Road by Cormac McCarthy one year, and I loved it. Also, I recommend Lumberjanes for a comic not published by Marvel, DC, or Image. They are available on Hoopla, if your library has that option. 6y
glitterkitty459 @sherrynuts ooh! Binti looks awesome 6y
sherrynuts @AWahle thanks for the recommendations! I will pick up both of them at the library. 6y
sherrynuts @glitterkitty459 let me know if you read and enjoy it! 6y
RunningMommyCrazy A walk in the woods by Bill Bryson would be good for the book about nature. And it‘s hilarious 6y
azulaco Have you already read Ender‘s Game? That would definitely count as a classic of genre fiction. 6y
glitterkitty459 @azulaco i have read ender's game, but i read a lot of sci-fi already so was hoping to find maybe a mystery or something... 😁 6y
azulaco @glitterkitty459 How about Agatha Christie? Her books qualify as classic mysteries for sure, and there are so many! They‘re pretty short reads, too. Pick one that was published, say, before 1960 and you‘re good to go. Or the Father Brown mysteries by G.K. Chesterton. 6y
azulaco By the way, I haven‘t read Americanah yet, but Homegoing was great. I highly recommend it for the post-colonial literature prompt. I hear great things about Americanah too. 6y
glitterkitty459 @azulaco Yeah I think I'll go with Agatha Christie, thanks! Murder on the Orient Express (from 1934) sounds good and there's a movie too 6y
Squid I love this idea!! I want to add this to my English classes next year!! 6y

I like these books a lot. They've received a lot of criticism, but I enjoy Aza and the escapism so. That's what a books all about.

CaitlinSiem I really enjoyed Magonia. I look forward to reading this one. 7y
IndyHannaJones @CaitlinSiem I did too! Yes it had a few YA cliches but if you're going to get snobby about that I bet you are the kind of boring snobby person who would turn up your nose at a free kitkat because it's not organic dark chocolate. Or something haha 7y

Enjoyed this sequel to Magonia. The plot wasn't as exploratory or new, but I enjoyed the expansion of the concepts and world-building of the first novel, as well as the exploration of what is sometimes required of you once you've found love, namely communication and a constant, daily choosing to stay. The beginning was a bit strenuous, but ultimately I was glad I stuck with it. 🐳🐳🐳🐳 (4/5 squallwhales) #LitsyAtoZ #MountTBR #ireadya

TrishMcCallister 4/5 squallwhales ...🤣 that‘s awesome. I absolutely love the world building in this. Such beautiful imagery. 5y

It essentially took me a month to read The Steerswoman's Road (combining The Steerswoman and The Outskirter's Secret); the length of time is no reflection on my enjoyment of the books. But now I'm finally starting in on something else!

Illness has really impacted both my reading and my posting, so my #bookishresolutions are all about getting back into the swing of reading and reviewing! I'm starting a Bullet Journal to better help track, and I'm participating in #LitsyAtoZ...multiple times over (YA, Fiction, Non-Fiction, graphic novels)! Here's to the first batch, and here's to the new year! #readjanuary

elkeOriginal What a cool way to do #LitsyAtoZ! I like seeing your batch of 'A' titles across genres together👍 7y
aeeklund @elkeo I totally thought I'd responded to your comment! Thank you! I might do more letters down the line. 7y
elkeOriginal I am glad you brought me back to this post because now I noticed the Autoimmune Wellness book - I need that and did not 'see' it the first time! 7y
TrishMcCallister You can do it ! I had to take half of this year away from reading due to illness as well. Focus on your health and happiness and all of these wonderful stories will still be waiting for you 🙂 5y

I definitely enjoyed Magonia more than this one. I found myself getting a little bored with the concept and the story itself. However, it had a good ending with no loose ends, so hopefully the story is over.

While I love the voices of Aza and Jason, I didn't enjoy this book as much as the first (Magonia). Headley most definitely knows how to write the feelings associated with being completely and hopelessly in love- sooo many feels- but the plot didn't totally hold my attention. I would definitely pick up another book following these characters if Headley decides to write any others, but overall I was left wanting a little more.

brilliantglow I absolutely love the covers for this series. Just wish I had enjoyed Magonia as much as the covers lol 7y
Merethebookgal @melbeautyandbooks @Donna_sBookMinute Thankfully the power was only out for a few hours, and it was fun to read by flashlight- it felt light I was sneakily reading past my bedtime 😉 7y
Merethebookgal @brilliantglow These covers are seriously gorgeous! I'm sorry you didn't like Magonia- I really liked it, but I'm about halfway through with Aerie and I'm still not sure how I feel about it. 7y
