Women Talking
Women Talking: A Novel | Miriam Toews
A transformative and necessary work--as completely unexpected as it is inspired--by the award-winning author of the bestselling novels All My Puny Sorrows and A Complicated Kindness. Based on actual events that happened between 2005 and 2009 in a remote Mennonite community where more than 100 girls and women were drugged unconscious and assaulted in the night by what they were told (by the men of the colony) were "ghosts" or "demons," Miriam Toews' bold and affecting novel Women Talking is an imagined response to these real events. The novel takes place over forty-eight hours, as eight women gather in secret in a neighbour's barn while the men are in a nearby town posting bail for the attackers. They have come together to debate, on behalf of all the women and children in the community, whether to stay or leave before the men return. Taking minutes is the one man trusted and invited by the women to witness the conversation--a former outcast whose own surprising story is revealed as the women speak. By turns poignant, witty, acerbic, bitter, tender, devastating, and heartbreaking, the voices in this extraordinary novel are unforgettable. Toews has chosen to focus the novel tightly on a particular time and place, and yet it contains within its 48 hours and setting inside a hayloft an entire vast universe of thinking and feeling about the experience of women (and therefore men, too) in our contemporary world. In a word: astonishing.

I know this has many big fans but sadly, I was not one of them. The story is provocative and challenging, and horrifying but I found the telling of it to be lacking. I think the author did a bit of a disservice in “filtering” it through the lens of a somewhat neutered male. I think also I‘ve become somewhat numb to stories reminiscent of Handmaid‘s Tale even though this one is based on real life events. 3⭐️

This is a great book so far but it is making me angry. When it comes to being raped and attacked you do not ever do nothing even when people don't believe you, ridicules you, shames you being quiet is never an option even if you stand to loose everything.

Readers appear to hold very strong opinions about this book—definitely get a love it or hate it vibe from a lot of reviews. In the aftermath of the discovery that for two years men in their Mennonite community have been drugging & raping women, a group of 8 women meet to discuss what should happen next—stay & do nothing, fight or leave. Horrifying, haunting & enraging, this factionalized account of real events makes for a powerful read.

Miriam Toew's Women Talking is so, so smart. It's based on the true story of a Mennonite community in Bolivia in which eight men drugged and raped women in their community over several years. (You can easily find out more via a simple Google search.) In this audiobook (I listened via @scribd, and Matthew Edison is an excellent narrator), (continued in comments)

UnabridgedPod we are there for the aftermath of the revelation that these women weren't being visited by the devil each night, as some (male) community members claimed but were, instead, the victims of an insidious plot to take advantage of their innocence and ignorance. Initially, I was surprised that a male narrator would read a book called Women Talking, but that choice tells the story through the filter of a male member of the community. ⬇️ 3mo
UnabridgedPod He's an outsider, unimplicated in the assaults, who is asked to take minutes of the women's discussion. At the heart of the discussion is whether the women should do nothing, should stay in the community and fight, or should leave. They discuss blame, the obligation to forgive, the worth of obligated forgiveness, the value of knowledge and reading . . . ⬇️ 3mo
UnabridgedPod I could go on. It's only a six-hour audiobook, but it's so, so powerful and beautiful and painful. Absolute recommendation (definitely on audio, but I imagine it would be equally powerful as a text). 3mo
Reggie I liked the in between moments she puts in there to break everything up, like how the sister will run her hands through her sister, Salome‘s hair when she‘s fired up, or how the boy will drive his invisible car around honking and shouting numbers. This is one of my favorites of the year. Great review! (edited) 3mo

A short and powerful novel based on an actual incident of a group of Mennonite women who are drugged and raped repeatedly by the men in their colony. The author imagines what might happen as the women discuss how they might save themselves and their children from a horrific patriarchy. So good. A must read for anyone who loves feminist lit.

Based on a true story, the book isn‘t about the rapes. It‘s about the culture in which they occurred. It‘s about whether forced forgiveness is really forgiveness. It‘s about whether you can disobey the Bible when you‘ve been kept illiterate and can‘t read it or interpret it for yourself. Do you stay in a system that used and brutalized you? Forgive your attackers so you can enter Heaven? Or leave when you know nothing about the outside world?

SW-T An interesting book and a good read. I‘m giving it a so-so because I personally dislike books where quotation marks aren‘t used for conversations. A formatting pet peeve. 4mo

Unpopular opinion - this just wasn‘t for me. Maybe because the “narrator” was male; I wanted more about the female characters; for being so short it seemed redundant.

It‘s horrific to think this is based off real life events and I applaud the author for bringing what happened to light.

This book was very emotionally challenging. It focuses on a group of women living in a Mennonite community who have been repeatedly raped by the men they know. As the story unfolds, these women find ways to protect their daughters and themselves from these brutal attacks. The novel is based on a true story, which makes it all that more horrifying. It has many similarities with A Handmaid‘s Tale, but lacks the powerful prose offered by Atwood.

This is hard reading.
It's wonderfully crafted, centred on the discussion between two extended families of women on what they should do, as their bailed rapists, journey back to the colony. They debate their options, reflect on the abuse, sexism, repression, the patriarchy, religion & their need to education their sons & protect their daughters. The 48hrs is tense, filled with anger, passion, rage & hurt. But it is also hopeful & at times funny.
