Detective Kyochiro Kaga of the Tokyo Police Department has just been transferred to a new precinct in the Nihonbashi area of Tokyo. Newly arrived, but with a great deal of experience, Kaga is promptly assigned to the team investigating the murder of a woman. But the more he investigates, the greater number of potential suspects emerges. It isnt long before it seems nearly all the people living and working in the business district of Nihonbashi have a motive for murder. To prevent the murderer from eluding justice, Kaga must unravel all the secrets surrounding a complicated life. Buried somewhere in the womans past, in her family history, and the last few days of her life is the clue that will lead to the murderer. From the international bestseller Keigo Higashino, author of The Devotion of Suspect X, comes one of his finest works of crime fiction yet.

Wow, I loved the way this unfolded! It‘s more like a series of short stories that form part of the larger mystery but still have their own resolution. Over the course of the book, there is a subtle shift to more of a traditional narrative. It‘s just so well done, I love how each of these Kaga mysteries is a little different!

With this finished, I‘m caught up on the Detective Kaga mysteries! First series done for #SeriesLove2024

I'm with the Independent, on the basis of this book at least. Didn't realise it was part of a series featuring Detective Kaga.

BarbaraBB I‘m with The Independent too 😀 9mo

Such a comfort read again, this second Detective Kawa mystery. Set in Tokyo, a woman is murdered and she seems to have no enemies. Who did it? Kawa has been assigned to the case and his investigation is mainly psychological. No violence, just that typical Japanese serenity.

Cinfhen Fauda is already in season 4 and it‘s an older series first produced on Israeli TV but I‘m watching it now on Netflix‘s because of the subtitles- it‘s deeply upsetting but I find it completely compelling. I finished season 2 last night - that‘s 24 episodes in 3 days!!! 14mo

Detective Kaga is super cool! This is the second book in his series. I wanted to read it this week so I could jump into the latest one, which was released last week. With Higashino‘s books, they seem to be extra special because they take so long to be translated! #hoopla

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

BarbaraBB I just purchased this one. Happy it is as good as I hoped! 1y

A detective mystery with many small riddles that get solved along the way in addition to the murder itself. As I said before, it was a bit slower than I hoped it to be, but that was largely due to the fact that I didn't read it in my native language, which kept me at arm's length from the characters. One minor point of critique is that it wasn't as gripping and didn't feature such insane twists as some of Higashino's previous books. ⬇

Yuki_Onna (continued) That was something I really missed as it was what got me interested in this author in the first place. Nevertheless, it's a solid detective mystery. 3,5/5.
My #Doublespin, #Scarathlon2020, #Screamathon and #October20in4 read.

My current read for #bookspin, #Scarathlon2020 #TeamSlaughter and #Screamathon. It's a bit slower than I hoped it to be.
But then, I tend to enjoy Japanese authors and stories much more when I read them in my native German. than when I read them in English. The foreign language and the quiet way of Japanese storytelling combined often keep me at arm's length.
Conclusion: The book is great, just that I'm reading it in English makes it a bit slow.

TheAromaofBooks I always think translated work is interesting because so much depends on the translator. And I wonder if certain languages translate better into other languages? Maybe Japanese rolls over into German better than it does English? 4y
Yuki_Onna @TheAromaofBooks You're right, it all depends on the translator!!! Murakami, for instance - I love his work in general, but especially when it's translated into German by Ursula Gräfe. When I read him translated by others, it's still good, but... not as good as it could be, you know?
Oh, that's an interesting theory! I've never thought about that before. You might be absolutely right there!
4y
Yuki_Onna @TheAromaofBooks The thing is just - most Japanese books don't get translated into German. So if I want to read them, I've got to read them in English... 😑 4y
TheAromaofBooks It may just be that certain translators “get“ an author's work better than others. For instance, I love the book Heidi, but I read one translation that I couldn't even finish because it was so badly done, while other versions I've read read so seamlessly that I wouldn't have guessed that they were translated at all. 4y
Yuki_Onna @TheAromaofBooks Jep, some translators seem to be on the same wavelength with certain authors. I love when that happens - it makes all the difference between something hardly readable and a masterpiece.
Oh, I didn't know there were so many different translations of Heidi into English! That was one of my fave books in childhood as well. 💞

This was an interesting mystery that I enjoyed! The story follows a detective trying to solve a murder but you also see into the lives of everyone he‘s speaking with. My only issue is that I found myself confused at times due to so many different characters.

This was one of my selections from #gettbr (Tailored Book Recommendations).

Not my normal mystery book but I enjoyed the vignettes of the peoples lives. This was also for one of my mystery book clubs. Next one we read is under it. Had no idea who had done it til the very end either. Tho that‘s a double edged sword for the writing.

Detective Kyochiro Kaga of the Tokyo Police Department is a most unusual investigator:

“Oh, I am investigating the murder, of course I am. But my job as a detective should go beyond that. People who‘ve been traumatized by a crime are victims too. Finding ways to comfort them is also part of my job.” 🕵🏻‍♂️

HardcoverHearts I‘m new to this author and just impressed with everything I have read by him. I hope you enjoy it. 4y
MamaGina @HardcoverHearts Yes, me too, I read 3 books by him last year and am enjoying this one too. It has a unique structure—you follow each witness and are introduced to the detective through their perspective and in that way learn more about him through each interaction. 🔍 4y

An intricate riddle that takes a while for every piece of the puzzle to come together. And when it does, all the pieces fit perfectly!

Newcomer may not be an exhilarating fast-paced crime thriller but its storyline is no less intriguing and the main character, Detective Kyoichiro Kaga, is a charming and unconventional character.

I thoroughly enjoyed this police procedural. Lovely unwinding of the clues and story as the investigation proceeds and Detective Kyochiro Kaga is a quirky and methodical hero who I would gladly follow on other adventures. #netgalley
