Over Sea, Under Stone
Over Sea, Under Stone | Susan Cooper
27 posts | 80 read | 32 to read
On holiday in Cornwall, the three Drew children discover an ancient map in the attic of the house that they are staying in. They know immediately that it is special. It is even more than that -- the key to finding a grail, a source of power to fight the forces of evil known as the Dark. And in searching for it themselves, the Drews put their very lives in peril. This is the first volume of Susan Cooper's brilliant and absorbing fantasy sequence known as The Dark Is Rising.

Remember this from your childhood? Me too. I love vintage children's books so I often re-read this.

Nicely written exciting middle grade or so tale of Arthurian returns, missing grails, and a mysterious great uncle with an interesting name.

I had this book marked as already read but I have no memory of it at all, just of the not so good movie I saw years ago.

And this series is one of my focus series #SeriesLove2023

Can't believe my reread of this is so slooow. Maybe I'll get more time for it this weekend. Feels like I need the beloved familiarity, as well-worn and well-loved as my paperback of the whole sequence!

Rereading this in preparation for a seasonally appropriate reread of The Dark is Rising! Least consequential of the series in many ways, and very young, but I still enjoy it.

Another wonderful middle grade fantasy series! I have one left to read. (A common refrain unfortunately...) They are pretty wonderful: atmospheric, folkloric, unsettling. These gorgeous new editions are from Puffin. #20series20days @Andrew65

If i was a kid, I'd have loved this book. As an adult, it's an enjoyable read, but nothing great. I'm torn about whether or not i want to try book two

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Give at least book 2 a try. It is VERY different in style and tone and was my jumping on point. Completely new characters except for Gumerry. 4y
AllisonM89 @TobeyTheScavengerMonk I'll give it a go then! I didnt have strong feelings about book one either way, but i also recognize that i probably should have read it 20-some years ago lol 4y

What is this pattern about English children always finding doors in and around wardrobes? Maybe if wardrobes were more popular in the US, we all would have had more exciting childhoods! 😂

Thanks for the tag @MoonWitch94 #two4Tuesday

1 - that‘s a loaded question! 😆 Assuming neatly organized stacks on shelves don‘t count...I can think of two. Otherwise, many!

2 - tagged, which I pulled this morning along with the second in the series to fit a couple of SRP prompts

Well, I loved this! It was iffy at first (all that talk of the natives) but then Simon, Jane & Barney found a map and their real quest (to find the grail) began. I loved the writing esp. the description of the Cornwall landscape. I loved how fully each kid was characterized. I loved the range of adults. I loved that it felt truly menacing at times. I loved how Arthurian myth was woven into the everyday. So fun! Now to wait for Book 2!

batsy Ooh, yay! So glad you enjoyed. ❤️ 5y

merelybookish @batsy I really did! The writing was beautiful and I was genuinely scared a few times. The situations felt real even with the fantastical elements. 5y
merelybookish @LeahBergen I had never heard of it till I went searching for a book published in 1965 for a challenge. But I'm so glad I discovered it. It's middle grade British fantasy at its best, I'd say. You should give it a go! 5y

I started reading this series as it was part of a recommended reading list in another book by Oberon Zell-Ravenheart and was instantly charmed. Though it is a little hard to read as she writes the accents really well. A lot slower then other books in the series but still a pick.

Finished this tonight as I sit here at the emergency vet with the doggo. I‘ve heard from many people that this series had a huge impact on them them as kids. I had never read it and decided it was time. I found it very underwhelming...slow pace, flat characters I never really cared for or connected with. I wanted to like it so much more! 😬

This book was a very slow read for me. The plot was there, the interest was there, but the pace and excitement were lacking. I never found myself saying "just one more page." A lot of times I made myself read further to a stopping point when I would've rather put it down mid paragraph. Lackluster is the word that keeps coming to mind. 3/5 ⭐'s

mcipher I loved these all as a kid, then re-read last summer and was surprised by how kind of boring they are - but loved them anyway because of the feeling they evoked for me. Did you read this now for the first time? 6y
WhatThePuck @mcipher yes, first time for me. I'm moving on to the second book, The Dark Is Rising. 🤞🤞 6y

xicanti I loved these books SO MUCH when I was 10, and they bored me silly when I tried to reread them in my early twenties. Sadness. 6y
Onceuponatime I‘m reading this now and came to Litsy to see what people think of it...because Im finding it pretty slow. I‘ve heard people rave about this series and how much they loved it when they were young, but I am about to bail on it. 😢 Have you started the Dark is Rising yet? Is it better? 6y
WhatThePuck @Onceuponatime I'm not very far into the 2nd one, but it already appears to be faster paced. 6y

I've been wanting to reread The Dark is Rising sequence for quite awhile--maybe this year? The Sword in the Stone is still on the #neverendingtbr list. #Stone #ReadingResolutions

LibrarianRyan I love this series. I too have been wanting a reread. I even have a set already. 6y
TK-421 @LibrarianRyan 🙌 My first encounter with this series was in grade 9 English when we were assigned The Dark is Rising. I recall daydreaming about it on the bus on my way to school & I don't remember being affected that way by a book since reading The Egypt Game & Ring Rise, Ring Set in elementary school. It wasn't until I was in my late 20s or early 30s that I realized The Dark is Rising was part of a series. 6y
LibrarianRyan @TK-421 I read it pretty young. It was part of my read the entire library while living in Alaska. I didn't read Egypt Game until I was an adult. I had friends who loved it and I think I missed something. To me, the Westing Game. OMG!! 6y
TK-421 @LibrarianRyan I'm sure I read The Westing Game when I was about 13, but I don't remember a thing about it! I'm looking forward to rereading it. Yeah, I have fond (though vague) memories but I'm not sure how the Egypt Game will hold up reading it as an adult 30+ years later. 6y

Okay I am going to hit a few with this post. It's a fantasy #saga that was made into a depressingly okay movie about 10 years ago. Some were #publishedinthe70s as they range from 1965-1977. This was such a fantastical #journey when I was a child that when I saw a box set I had to buy it. One day I will pass it to my nephew even though I have had this set so long it's yellowed. All these books #gotogether never to be parted. #junliantjuly

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Love love love love love. 7y
LibrarianRyan @TobeyTheScavengerMonk I know right. I picked up a box set years ago for a reread and haven't gotten to it yet. 7y

Some of my favourite #fantasy books. Love the books that depict growing strangeness and unease when the lines between this world and an unknown one start to blur, with elements of mythology, folklore, and the old religions. #ReadingWomenMonth @thereadingwomen

I already used this for one #aprilbookshowers prompt, but since I finished it now and it fits the prompt for today, I'm using it again - three #siblings go on an Arthurian themed adventure. I liked the relationship between the siblings. They worked together well, if sometimes grudgingly, but they each also got to have their own piece of the adventure! Here's a picture of my sibling (and mom), while we are on the topic :)

leslieisreading I LOVED those books when I was growing up! 👍🏻 8y

Finished this last night. Was a fast read and engrossing enough, but not my favourite book ever. I was undecided between giving it "pick" or "so-so" but in the end I had to go with pick, I did enjoy the characters and it certainly leaves a promise of lots of interesting things to come. I enjoyed it enough to want to read the rest of the books. Being a children's book there were some twists that were obvious and so, but all in all a fun read.

Peddler410 I‘m reading this to my daughter — it‘s her current postal book club book. I read the others in the series in college but never read this one. Have you finished the series? 6y

The story of how I got this book: when I was about 8-9 years old and fully obsessed with Harry Potter a friend of my parents told me she'd read a book series when she'd been my age that she loved and thought was a perfect fit - she gave me her whole collection...At the time I couldn't read in English so I stored them to read later and forgot about them - they were mentioned in the latest book I read and I knew it was time to read them!

TobeyTheScavengerMonk This one is a little slow, but book 2 is incredible. 8y
hlgreenfield @TobeyTheScavengerMonk I was finding it a bit slow, but I was enjoying the characters enough that I'll probably be giving the rest of the series a chance! ( Unless it suddenly gets very bad in the second half of the book) 8y
