Punishment She Deserves: A Lynley Novel
Punishment She Deserves: A Lynley Novel | Elizabeth George
39 posts | 34 read | 19 to read
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers and Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley are forced to confront the past as they try to solve a crime that threatens to tear apart the very fabric of a quiet, historic medieval town in England The cozy, bucolic town of Ludlow is stunned when one of its most revered and respected citizens--Ian Druitt, the local deacon--is accused of a serious crime. Then, while in police custody, Ian is found dead. Did he kill himself? Or was he murdered? When Barbara Havers is sent to Ludlow to investigate the chain of events that led to Ian's death, all the evidence points to suicide. But Barbara can't shake the feeling that she's missing something. She decides to take a closer look at the seemingly ordinary inhabitants of Ludlow--mainly elderly retirees and college students--and discovers that almost everyone in town has something to hide. A masterful work of suspense, The Punishment She Deserves sets Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers and Inspector Thomas Lynley against one of their most intricate cases. Fans of the longtime series will love the many characters from Elizabeth George's previous novels who join Lynley and Havers, and readers new to the series will quickly see why she is one of the most popular and critically acclaimed writers of our time. Both a page-turner and a deeply complex story about the lies we tell, the lies we believe, and the redemption we need, this novel will be remembered as one of George's best.

I did not know Elizabeth George was of one of my favorite places, Whidbey Island. ❤️ Ok, I HATE the title, but as you read, you will understand how appropriate it is. A Ludlow Deacon is taken in for questioning under scandalous charges and commits suicide while left alone. Or did he? It‘s a long book as Havers & Lynley search out evidence re the death & charges.

“She charged up the aisle. She leapt onto the stage with such momentum she lost her balance. She fell and slid in Dorothea‘s direction, ending up at Dorothea‘s feet. And just as Lynley had instructed her to do, she made even that look like part of the show.”

He and Ardery were eyeball to eyeball. What ran between them would have kept a refrigerator operational for at least a month.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for this title in the Inspector Lynley series which should in this case be called the DS Barbara Havers series. This is a dense, satisfying mystery, made particularly diverting in the audio version read by Simon Vance. (This kitty of course deserves no punishment at all 😻.)

2. Back to the start. I wait a long time for her books!
3. Several books ago in this series the author killed off one of my favorite characters. I‘d definitely undo that!

rretzler I love the George‘s Thomas Lynley series. And I totally agree with you about Helen! I‘m curious to know what you think of the one you‘re reading now. I enjoyed it (because it‘s George and I waited so long), but I thought that Lynley acted differently than he used to - he did and said things that i thought were uncharacteristic of him. I‘m curious as to what others who like the series think. 5y
Bklover @rretzler Oh, this is one of those times I love Litsy! I‘m so glad to find someone who was upset about Helen! I was so mad I skipped the next two books in the series (and still haven‘t read them). I‘m not too far into this one, so I‘ll let you know what I think. I‘ve been reading George for years, and always wait for the paperbacks since they are such chunksters. (I may have to give in and read the ones I missed sometime!) 5y
rretzler Too funny! I skipped the next book too (What Came Before He Shot Her), but I‘ve read all the rest. I don‘t think I‘ll ever read that one, but I did read the one after and while it was weird, I‘m glad I did. The series certainly changed after With No One As Witness. What other mystery series like that do you read? 5y
Bklover @rretzler I like Maisie Dobbs-haven‘t read them all though. I also like Tana French. There are a lot of series that I‘ve read a couple of. I used to be in a mystery book group and got introduced to the first in a lot of different series. What are your favorites? By the way, I was looking at your feed and my first job was as a staff auditor at Price Waterhouse. Looooong time ago! (edited) 5y

The latest Lynley-Havers mystery may be one of the best. Lots of subplots and a fair number of characters, but not to the point that it made the story hard to follow. 4/5⭐️

Sergeant Havers and DCS Ardery are paired to conduct a follow-up investigation of an investigation into a death in custody. When Lynley and Havers return to conduct a third investigation, they discover sexual harassment, rape and murder, all linked to obsessively helicoptering parents. A complicated story, but one of her best.

Trigger warning: Ardery‘s alcoholism a central story line.

I love the world of Lynley and Havers. This book was a great continuation of the series. A bit slow to get into but the story was engrossing. At times Lynley and Havers feel like old friends and it was nice to visit their world for a time.

#GetMovin #day10 #SomethingLikeThis If you‘re a fan of Elizabeth George‘s Inspector Lynley series, I highly recommend Peter Robinson‘s DCI Banks series. Both have been going for a long time(over 20 books in each)both are British crime novels(Banks in Yorkshire, Lynley is Scotland Yard)& both are highly readable. I‘d recommend starting at the beginning for both though, the story arcs for both really need to be read chronologically. So get reading!

There‘s something to be said for a series. Book 20 in the #inspectorlynley series solidifies all that I love in these books: watching Lynsey and Barbara Havers grow and regress and change has made me love them so much. And the fact that it‘s a platonic relationship makes this great mystery series just that little bit different.

Who wants to weigh in on which woman the title refers to? Ardrey? Havers? Missa Lomax? Ding/Dena Donaldson? Clover Freeman? All of the above?

Excellent entry in the series. I hated the last scene between Havers & Lyndley, however.

Thomas Lynley mystery #20 and probably my favorite from the last few. All are chunksters and at 667 pages this is no exception. George is a master of interweaving many character studies while never losing the overall plot. This one involves an apparent suicide in custody of a deacon accused of pedophilia. Havers is back and trying to toe the line (failing as usual) Lynley has his everpresent love life and Ardrey‘s drinking is worse. 4⭐️

Readerann Aaah I love these. Hubby watches them on TV and I read the books. 6y
Booksnchill @Readerann I confess I do both but I really think only Havers was perfectly cast... 6y

In February, both of my sweet old cats died within a week‘s time. March got better. Then April started with this guy tearing his knee (think ACL, humans) - he did the same thing in early 2017 to the *other* knee - and as a result I‘m taking my first “vacation” in like ten years so I can be with him as he recovers from last week‘s surgery. We are both kind of miserable and very tired. I am so grateful for this Lynley book! Long and marvelous. 👍🐾

I enjoyed both of these immensely. This is the 20th in Elizabeth George‘s Lynley series, and I agree with others that it felt like she went back to the original recipe I‘ve enjoyed in the past. This was only my second Kristin Hannah (after The Nightingale of course) and she‘s become a favorite author of mine as well. I‘m looking forward to working my way through her back catalogue.

If you‘re one who stopped following #ElizabethGeorge‘s Lynely series because of disappointments a few books back, it‘s time to start reading again. She‘s back in top form, and this one features my favorite Barbara Havers, with lots of interaction with Lynely too. Fortunately, no whiney Deborah. It‘s long, but worth it.

bnp I've got this one on my audio hold list at the library. Good to hear you liked it and there's no whiny Debirah. 6y

Elizabeth George is one of the few crime writers I‘ve read who has yet to write an uninteresting novel. Every book I own written by her has enthralled me,her characters are well written, her research is impeccable & every plot is believable, so even though they‘re all chunksters you stay in that books world because you care. That‘s the mark of a great writer. DS Havers is forced to accompany DCS Ardery to Ludlow to investigate a death in custody.

Lynnsoprano Really looking forward to this. I love this series. 6y

It‘s 4.30am here in Sydney so it‘s my birthday! Kicking off with a few chapters of the brand new Inspector Lynley novel by Elizabeth George, released yesterday & given to me by my baby girl @Ciara_Rosey as my present. Probably get to bed soon before I pass out with a book on my face, she writes really heavy chunksters that could cause some damage.

I didn‘t like Ardery all that much when they first introduced her now at the end of part one really not liking her. Not liking Hillier that much either trying to get rid of our duo. Granted Havers can be a bit of a loose cannon at times but she‘s a damn good Detective and Lynley knows it too. Can‘t wait to see how the rest of this plays out.
