The Outcast Dead
The Outcast Dead | Elly Griffiths
Elly Griffiths draws us all the way back to prehistoric times . . . Highly atmospheric. New York Times Book Review The service of the Outcast Dead is held annually in Norwich commemorating the bodies in the paupers graves. This years proceedings hold special interest for forensic archaeologist Ruth Galloway, who has just unearthed the notorious Mother Hook, hanged in 1867 at Norwich Castle for killing multiple children. Now Ruth is reluctantly starring in a TV special, working alongside the alluring historian Dr. Frank Barker. Nearby, DCI Harry Nelson is investigating the case of three children found dead in their home when another child is abducted. A kidnapper dubbed the Childminder claims responsibility, but is the Childminder behind the deaths too? The team races to find out and after a child close to everyone involved disappears, the stakes couldnt be higher. An uncommon, down-to-earth heroine whose acute insight, wry humor, and depth of feeling make her a thoroughly engaging companion. Erin Hart, Agatha and Anthony Awardnominated author of Haunted Ground and Lake of Sorrows Elly Griffithss Ruth Galloway novels have been praised as gripping (Louise Penny), highly atmospheric, (New York Times Book Review), and must-reads for fans of crime fiction (Associated Press). She is the winner of the 2010 Mary Higgins Clark Award.

It's always lovely to be back with these characters.

I wasn't super intrigued by the mystery in this book. But this was a comfort read for me and worked really well for that.

Delightful. Though I think I have more invested in following the lives of the main characters than the crime/mystery.
Also discovered this is not the authors “ real” name. She is Domenica de Rosa. She has published under that name also.

Suet624 I often wonder why authors choose to write under several names. 2y

This Ruth Galloway novel was all kinds of complicated. The discovery of the skeletal remains of a woman imputed to be a baby killer, are discovered, and Ruth becomes part of a documentary debating the woman‘s guilt or innocence. This discovery hits too close to home for someone, however, and it seems that history may be repeating itself. All kinds of truths are revealed. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Book 6 in the Ruth Galloway series finds her excavating a body which appears to be that of a notorious 19th century child killer, while DI Nelson is investigating the mysterious death of a child. These books are an easy read with characters who I enjoy. You don't need to think too hard and while it is becoming a little formulaic plot wise there is usually a climactic ending which is enjoyable.

Another winner in this series. I am wondering if all the books will involve a child either kidnapped or murdered. Though I enjoy the books so much because of the characters not the mystery. The crime solving just added a little more to the books. 4.5 ⭐ Book 16 for #Scarathon2021 @Clwojick #TeamSlaughter #SpookOween #Necronomathon @Patchshank #Wickedathon @StayCurious #LittenListen @aperfectmjk #BookSpinBingo @TheAromaofBooks #SeriesRead2021

Mehso-so

Unfortunately my memory of the events and backstory of the first book, which I read this time last year, is rather vague, so a lot of this book was lost on me. Atmosphere and characters are what this author does best. The actual events are rather forgettable.

I'm dithering between a pick and so-so.

Book 6 of the Ruth Galloway series. Ruth has to solve the mystery of the notorious Victorian childminder Mother Hook. Did she kill her charges or love them. This is one of the best so far. 4.5⭐

I flew through this, the 6th installment of the Dr. Ruth Galloway series. Just a rip-roaring good story. These books are consistently good, but this may be my favorite so far. I am trying to ration myself to one a month, so that I can savor them and not run through the series too quickly. Was the baby murdered? How does it tie in to the child abductions? And where does the subject of the archeological dig fit in? Engrossing.

MamaGina Love this series ... Just found out my library hold is in for the latest one!🤓 6y
Lynnsoprano @MamaGina My library‘s collection of these is kind of hit or miss. Can‘t understand why they wouldn‘t have all the books in the series if they‘re going to have some🤷‍♀️ 6y

Waiting to be discharged all day and my sister in law (god love her I am truly blessed to have her in my life) had my little one. I heard a knock on the door thinking it was my surgeon and I see this little nugget instead. Instantly made my day. On a side note I'm almost done this book 😂

Another excellent Dr Ruth Galloway story! Maybe I‘m dense, but I can‘t seem to figure out whodunnit in these books. That‘s rare (and exciting) for me!

And now I‘m starting the next one. I can‘t stop reading these, though I just have 7 & 8 left to read and then I‘m out! 😱

For those who‘ve read the series, who is your favorite character? I think mine is Cathbad. 🔮

MicheleinPhilly I need to pick this series back up. I‘ve been busy with Helen Grace! 7y
kezzlou85 I'm up to the ghost fields and my fave character is Cathbad too. He's brilliant. 💛 7y
MallenNC I love this series. I can't remember if I've ever figured out the culprit or not. I love Ruth and all the recurring characters more than the mysteries. I finally caught up on the series in December so now I'm anxiously awaiting the next one! 7y

LauraBrook @kezzlou85 He‘s so great! And I love how he‘s changing Ruth and Nelson and everyone else too, in good ways. 7y
LauraBrook @MallenNC Yay, more Ruth fans! I agree, the characters keep me coming back. Only 4 months until the new one comes out! 7y
kezzlou85 @LauraBrook yeah me too. He's such an interesting character. Hoping to be caught up before the new one comes out. Plus I live in Norfolk and near many of the locations so that's always fun too. 7y
LauraBrook @kezzlou85 SHUT UP I am so jealous that you live there!!! Have you been to some of the locations? (The real ones, of course.) That‘s so cool! I don‘t think there are any books set near where I live - there‘s a cozy mystery series, but all locations where anything happens are fake. 7y
kezzlou85 @LauraBrook its so cool. Yep I have. I live between Kings Lynn and Norwich so been to both of them. In my current read they're at Hunstanton which is a lovely seaside town. Best fish and chips around. 7y
LauraBrook @kezzlou85 Adding all of those places to my Visit In England list! 7y
kezzlou85 @LauraBrook oh lovely. Norwich still has a quite big outdoor market which is worth a visit and of course the castle and cathedral. 7y

This is one of my favorite mystery series, and this one was another pick for me. The way the modern case wove into Ruth's archeology case was clever and the additional element of the documentary was fun to read. I'm glad I still have a few more of these to read before I catch up on the full series.
