This Side of Paradise (Wisehouse Classics Edition) (2016)
This Side of Paradise (Wisehouse Classics Edition) (2016) | F Scott Fitzgerald
"It bears the impress, it seems to me, of genius. It is the only adequate study that we have had of the contemporary American in adolescence and young manhood." -Burton Rascoe of the Chicago Tribune THIS SIDE OF PARADISE is the debut novel of F. Scott Fitzgerald. Published in 1920, and taking its title from a line of the Rupert Brooke poem Tiare Tahiti, the book examines the lives and morality of post-World War I youth. Its protagonist, Amory Blaine, is an attractive Princeton University student who dabbles in literature. The novel explores the theme of love warped by greed and status seeking. The novel centers on Amory Blaine, a young Midwesterner who, convinced that he has an exceptionally promising future, attends boarding school and later Princeton University. He leaves behind his eccentric mother Beatrice and befriends a close friend of hers, Monsignor Darcy. While at Princeton he goes back to Minneapolis where he re-encounters Isabelle Borg, a young lady whom he met as a little boy, and starts a romantic relationship with her at Princeton he repeatedly writes ever more flowery poems but they become disenchanted with each after meeting again at his prom . . . 104 years since its publishing, this classic defines America still. What is fake? What is real? What and who do we really love? Do we still have faith? And if we do, what do we worship? Disillusion, youthful rebellion, feminism and socialism vs. capitalism. It‘s all here. There was not one Lost Generation - there have been many. Frankly, there continues to be. Fitzgerald‘s prose is essential American Literature.

CarolynM I loved this when I read it as a teenager. I‘ve always wondered if I would still love it if I read it again. 8mo

Considered a quintessential work of the Jazz Age, the novel follows Amory, an impulsive young man who squanders his college education at Princeton and recklessly falls in love with a girl from the South.

My favorite almost-pick of the year? Fitzgerald's inventive writing saves this story of a Princeton student 'finding himself' from being boring. But it also seems meandering and uneven - not like Gatsby at all in that respect. For all the strangeness of the lost social norms of the period, it's crazy to me how similar the mc's character is to a contemporary college intellectual dude. @Cinfhen @BarbaraBB

BarbaraBB Love your drawing 😂 and am intrigued by the premise of the book. 1y
Cinfhen That is really crazy / goes to show not much has changed when it comes to privileged white kids at Princeton 😉 1y
Billypar @BarbaraBB Ha - thanks! It's not what I was expecting - sometimes with good results, but other times not. 1y
See All 6 Comments
Billypar @Cinfhen Yeah, he does have some character progression but it's something like 'aspiring snob with dreams of fame' to 'opinionated intellectual who refuses to get a job on principle'. 1y
Cinfhen So basically this was autobiographical for Scott 😁😜 1y
Billypar @Cinfhen He was the same age as the main character when he wrote it, so I wouldn't be shocked 😄 1y

I've never read anything else by Fitzgerald except the one we all read. While that novel is about someone looking back on his youth, his debut is about a young scholar who's looking ahead to his future with great zeal as he attends Princeton. Nas must have had a similar perspective when he made his debut album Illmatic, and I thought The World Is Yours is perfect for the theme. @Cinfhen @BarbaraBB

Cinfhen Brilliant! Once again you‘ve raised the bar ❤️🎶🙌🏻can‘t wait to see what you do with next month‘s prompt #DramaQueen 😂 1y
BarbaraBB I‘ve only read that one too 😊, looking forward to your review of this one. And I saw NAS live last year and he was so good, glad to add him to the list! 1y
Billypar @Cinfhen It took me awhile to come up with the choices for this month's prompt, but I thought of both a book and song for DramaQueen pretty quickly. Looking forward to it! 1y

Fitzgerald's first novel on a WWI-era Princeton student. He enjoyed adulation as the voice of his generation after its publication, but I'd prefer the hard-earned maturity of later works (The Beautiful & Damned & The Last Tycoon). A whiff of cocky undergraduate in the tone that's juvenile, though also poignant when one is mindful of what life had in store for the author, namely alcoholism & premature death

Although the writing was beautiful and I can see why this book made Fitzgerald famous, I don‘t feel like it had much of a plot. As a result, I didn‘t retain much of what I read and I‘m afraid the only thing I‘ll remember when I think about this book is the scene with Eleanor and the horse.

dabbe THE GREAT GATSBY was definitely Fitzgerald's magnum opus. I felt the same way about this book. 🤗 1y

This was not good. It was literally just a privileged man whining that no girls loved him for 216 pages. And why was one chapter written like a play when all the others were normal? 2⭐️

March 26,1920 The publication of F.Scott Fitzgerald‘s first novel was yesterday a hundred years ago?😱
Note the price ,$1.75 This is a Scribner ad that is in one of my favorite books about the Fitzgeralds , a large trim size book that reproduces the family scrapbooks ,The Romantic Egotists.from 1974.Oh yeah, Zelda probably would have dumped him if this book didn‘t come out when it did.

I enjoyed reading F. Scott Fitzgerald's first novel, a story about Amory Blane, a young college graduate trying to find his way in post-World War I life.
#ReadingThroughTheYears192021 #1920

jewright Amory annoys me so much! He‘s so whiny! What did you like about the book? 5y
CoffeeNBooks @jewright I really like Fitzgerald's writing style. He captures Amory's sense of angst over trying to find his purpose in life. 5y
jewright @CoffeeNBooks I love Fitzgerald‘s other books The Great Gatsby and The Beautiful and the Damned. I probably should try it again. 5y
CoffeeNBooks @jewright I love Gatsby! I have The Beautiful and Damned on my bookshelf, and it's the next Fitzgerald I plan to read. 5y

My first F. Scott Fitzgerald book. I got this book from the Christmas book exchange from the #bookclub @MrBook and @BookBabe wonderfully run. A very well-written book! Truly, one of the most well-written books I have ever read. The development of Amory Blaine was wonderful to follow. I loved and underlined many quotes. This book will surely stay with me.

This semi-autobiographical novel, Fitzgerald‘s debut, follows the life and many loves of Princeton student Amory Blaine as he drifts from romantic idealism and self-absorption into a more disillusioned adulthood. With its rhythmic prose and themes of materialism in post WW1 modern society, Fitzgerald captures the Jazz Age in a novel.
