Halla is a housekeeper who has suddenly inherited her great-uncle's estate... and, unfortunately, his relatives. Sarkis is an immortal swordsman trapped in a prison of enchanted steel. When Halla draws the sword that imprisons him, Sarkis finds himself attempting to defend his new wielder against everything from bandits and roving inquisitors to her own in-laws... and the sword itself may prove to be the greatest threat of all.

This book was amazing⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The characters, world building and witty laugh out loud banter was all perfections. Loved reading a cozy fantasy with an older FMC Halla was so relatable and funny. I didn‘t realize this was set in an established world from other series but that didn‘t hurt the story at all. I can‘t wait to get more books set in the world and really look forward to the sequel hinted at the end.

Tad bit more angst, moral grayness and murder than I expected, but overall, fairly fluffy romantasy with enough adventure plot and character development to keep me interested. Frequent bursts of hysterical giggling suggest T. Kingfisher can bring the humour regardless of genre. The HEA's never really in doubt. 😉 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? Zale is marvelous non-binary rep, they are simply they/them with no further discussion needed, fully fleshed out as a person, wry and wise - and a priest-lawyer is an invention I'm now surprised hasn't shown up in fiction before. 6mo
Robotswithpersonality 3/? I gather from the cover promotion this book is set in the same world as other books written by this author, but since I hadn't read them and in no way felt like I was missing anything, I can vouch for the ability to read it as a standalone. 6mo
Robotswithpersonality 4/? Head cannon: The whole book I couldn't help wondering if T. Kingfisher saw that scene (read that scene?) in The Princess Bride about "there's a shortage of perfect breasts in the world, 'twould be a pity to damage yours" and just built an entirely different story out of that scenario. 6mo
See All 6 Comments
Robotswithpersonality 5/? Always appreciate a mature heroine without interest in having children.
Kudos on the truly creepy new forest cryptid.
6mo
Robotswithpersonality 6/7 Not a particularly kind depiction of someone uninterested in sex, or maybe just not interested in sex with a particular individual, unfortunately a situation where we're not getting the experience from that individual's own perspective, just mentioned repeatedly in passing by another, for plot. 🫤 6mo
Robotswithpersonality 7/7 ⚠️suicidal ideation 6mo

An enjoyable fantasy romance in the world I‘ve already grown to love

A widow in peril meets a magic sword—or a rugged warrior inhabiting the magic sword in question. A fight for her inheritance ensues. There are also sword-related shenanigans, the scary Wandering Hills that refuse to stay where they should, and resourceful clergymen who‘d rather not use that crossbow, kind sir, but if they must…

Fun banter, fun worldbuilding, fun all around

This book is so good! I had seen it recommended on various book subreddits occasionally and grabbed it when it was 1.99 at some point. HILARIOUS female lead and fantastic magical sword/guardsman companion!

Kingfisher is a new favorite & an automatic buy. Her fantasy worlds are filled with interesting characters, intriguing magic, loads of humor & delightful banter—they‘re just fun stories to read. And this one, as much romance as fantasy, has an immortal swordsman, trapped in a sword & at the command of whoever holds it & a feisty, independent widow who just wants to live her life plus a monk, miscreants, obnoxious family, & more. So fun.

Liatrek Really looking forward to reading this one! I just finished my first book by this author and really loved it. 1y

Every bit as entertaining as I expected…and I‘ve laughed out loud enough I‘ve had to start reading passages to my husband because he keeps asking me what‘s going on. Kingfisher is definitely becoming a new favorite…

Going with a housekeeper who inherits an immortal swordsman trapped inside a…you guessed it…sword to start the morning. It‘s another Kingfisher book so I‘m anticipating a wildly fun story.

#fourfoursin22 unorthodox (taking this prompt as unconventional/unusual... I'd say a romance where one of the people is trapped in an enchanted sword is unusual) @Lauredhel

I've wanted to read this for ages and I'm so glad I finally did cause I loved it. Great standalone fantasy romance. I liked the romance but also loved the worldbuilding and secondary characters.

RosePressedPages I loved this book too! It took me forever to get to it but I‘m glad I did :) 2y

This was a fun fantasy/romance/adventure. The main character accidentally discovers a magic sword with an enchanted guardian. Things I love - older (late 30‘s) heroine & hero - delightful banter - great side characters. Our heroine can be a bit much at times, but still a great read. I am loving this author‘s humor and look forward to more reads by Kingfisher. 4.5⭐️

GondorGirl Ooo, I haven't read this one yet, but I'm a huge Kingfisher fan, so I'll have to check it out! 2y

I only discovered T Kingfisher about 8 months ago, and I absolutely adore her. I don‘t think I‘ve ever found an author who consistently makes me chortle whilst reading as she does. This was the fifth books of hers I‘ve read and it is as wonderful as the others - and can I just say how refreshing it is to read a book where the protagonists are 30+ years old? I hope that this does turn into a trilogy, as I definitely want to read more.

I didn‘t know what to expect when I started this book, but I‘m so glad that I gave it a chance. This book is hilarious with a great plot, wonderful characters, and a sweet romance. It was so good that I blew through this 426 page read. I look forward to reading more books from Kingfisher!

This story is a near neighbor of the Clocktaur War books. I came for the inventive settings, the amusing dialog, and the fun characters. I was ambushed by a Romance plot. (I'm not overly fond of romances; I think they're tedious.) I still had a great time. The best part for me was the heroine's superpower: the ability to confuse and confound any foe (and most friends) with stream-of-consciousness absurdities that almost make sense.

I loved this book so much more than I expected. It was SO funny - I was literally laughing out loud throughout (and I definitely scared my dog a couple times). It reminds me of another recent favorite - The Blacksmith Queen. Apparently books that are fairly violent, adorably romantic, absurd, and unexpectedly hilarious are exactly my cup of tea. I can‘t wait to read more from this author!

Someday I will post interesting pictures instead of just books at weird angles.

It has really been too long since I've read T. Kingfisher/Ursula Vernon. It's so hard to find good comic fantasy, you'd think I would keep the sources I know of near to hand.

I would read pretty much anything Ursula Vernon writes. Her blend of humor and world-building is just my cup of tea. This book is what happens if you cross Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams, and a D&D campaign. It is hilarious and smart and definitely worth the $1.99 that it‘s currently being offered at.

This #romantsy is so fun. The heroine, Hella is older, chatty, easily distracted and getting the chance to be her own hero for the first time because she accidentally becomes the wielder of an enchanted sword. The hero, Sarkis, is trapped in the sword.

Set in the same world as - and a few months on from - the Clocktaur Duology, this is another stonking book from T. Kingfisher/Ursula Vernon. The death of her great-uncle leads to Halla discovering she would rather kill herself than marry her cousin. Thus begins a romance featuring an enchanted sword, lawyerly priests, bandits and a very patient ox. Highly recommended!

A hugely enjoyable romantic fantasy brimming with humour and great characters. If you need a break from angsty grimdark fantasy where the fate of the world lies in the balance, read this. It's light, it's laugh out loud funny, and the romance is very sweet.

A pick, a pick, a pick! I chortled through the whole thing. The author seems to be creating the books in this Clocktaur world by sticking obscure D&D characters in a creativity box, shaking madly, and playing with the tropes, and oh, that route so works for me. I am super excited to learn that more books are planned!
