The Girl the Sea Gave Back | Adrienne Young
An epic standalone novel set in the brutally stunning, viking inspired world that Adrienne Young crafted in her first novel, Sky In The Deep.

MY RATING⇢ 3 STARS | GRADE C
The action scenes were incomparable...but they weren't enough to carry the whole story. I wanted more than what this story delivered. I wanted the romantic tension that the first book had. Instead, there were only a handful of scenes with both the main characters present.

I loved this book. The descriptions were beautiful and the story followed a young woman trying to find her place.

I really enjoyed this story that follows Halvard, 10 years after Sky in the Deep.

I was pulled into the story from page one. I was really happy to be back in the world and to see what the characters were up to. I really enjoyed the intro to a new Viking clan. The only thing is I wanted more of Tova‘s people story! I feel like we barely scratched the surface with them and a book about them would be appreciated.

Guys, I loved this book! I‘m surprised it has gotten so many low reviews. I love the descriptive writing the Adrienne Young offers in her stories. I always feel like I‘m alongside the characters in the woods or along the bitter sea. I really enjoyed this one! Vikings, rune casting, female leads. All my jam.

Bookzombie I really liked Sky In The Deep and this one is on my TBR. 🙂 3mo
TheBookKeepers @Bookzombie I think you‘ll enjoy this one then!! I loved being back in the same world but with insight into new clans! 3mo

Sky In The Deep was one of my favorites last year, and while I didn‘t enjoy this one quite as much, it was still very good.

SoManyBooksNotEnoughTime is this a sequel to Sky in the Deep? or just same author? 4mo

While The Girl the Sea Gave Back didn‘t resonate with me as much as Sky in the Deep I still found it to be a worthy companion novel. Be prepared for the differences, but also try to go with the flow of what the novel is supposed to represent and I think you‘ll enjoy it. Thanks, #NetGalley, for the chance to read this one! While marketed as a standalone set in the same landscape as Sky in the Deep, I really consider this more of a sequel, though Eelyn is not the focus. The narrative has more voices & gives a more epic feel, though mainly it is split between Tova and Halvard (ten years past the events of the first book). It‘s a break in style & the ending calls for a more direct sequel. It‘s an exciting adventure!

I loved Sky in the Deep so I hate how disappointed I am in this book. I found the first part confusing but after finding my footing In the story I realized how little I cared about any of it. I was not nvested in either protagonist and most of the events were so predictable that there wasn't even enough suspense to keep me interested. I love the world that Young brings to the page but this was a miss for me.

hermyknee I felt the same way — I didn‘t even finish it 😕 6mo

I was so excited to get my hands on this because I had absolutely loved Sky in the Deep. While I did like getting a glimpse into the lives of those characters after ten years, the story itself was a bit of a disappointment. It wasn‘t that I disliked it - But the pacing felt off and it took me absolutely forever to get through. I don‘t regret reading it, but it wasn‘t the follow up I was hoping for.

***#earc thanks to #NetGalley for a fair review***

Like SITD, our two protagonists meet across a battlefield. They should be enemies. They should stand against each other. But the Spinners have spoken, their destinies are entwined, their stories spun from the same thread of yarn. When your fate is tied to the sea, but what will the tides bring? So good!!

She “would be Dagaz. A new dawn.”

But who‘s side will she defend? Tova is a Kyrr Truthtongue the sea deposited on Svell shores. She‘s a woman without a tribe, enemy in her own home, an orphan in all others.

“I‘d been born in the mountain, but I became a
man on the fjord.”

Halvard (the brother of Fiske/Iri) is a Nadhir warrior of some influence.

Which is probably my favorite thing about Young‘s writing. While most authors are manufacturing creative wartime tactics, Young is mired in the history of hand-to-hand compact, small, tight-knit tribes, enemies within walking distance, movement on foot, complete devastation of entire villages at the end of an axe.

“War is faithful to come looking for us time and
again.”

I ♥️ Young‘s writing having devoured both the wintry Sky In The Deep and this springtime story in a weekend! Though companion novels, they track very different tales. SITD is a bloody, battlefield romp in the aftermath of war. TGTSGB plots the political strategy of war. “Hagalaz: complete destruction, the storm that devours.”

Man, another #netgalley book I didn‘t like. They‘re never going to send me anything again 😭

This book really isn‘t terrible, it just isn‘t for me. I found Halvard incredibly boring and I didn‘t get behind him at all. Like I say in my review, had Adrienne Young focused solely on Tova, I would‘ve been more invested. Halvard is just so blllaaaaaah.

So when I signed up for #netgalley, I was like “this looks good and this looks neat and I wanna read that,” and was approved for 4 books right out the gate!

I‘ve only read one of those four and I DNF‘d it and gave it an honest, though negative, review. Now I‘m worried if I don‘t get some more of these ARCs read and (hopefully) positively reviewed, Netgalley will never approve me again.

Hope this one is a good one! Fingers crossed 🤞

Samplergal When I started I was the same. I reviewed children‘s books for a while to get positive reviews up. I don‘t know if it mattered. If you‘re comfortable with kids books, it may make a difference. 8mo
