Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy: A Graphic Novel
Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy: A Graphic Novel: A Modern Retelling of Little Women | Rey Terciero
31 posts | 35 read | 21 to read
2018 marks the 150th anniversary of the classic Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. Join Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy as they are reenvisioned as a blended family living in modern day NYC in this beautiful, full-color graphic novel. With their father away in the military and their mother working overtime to support the family, the March sisters have to rely on one another to make it from day to day. Whether they're arguing over the bathroom, struggling with homework, fighting off bullies, understanding their crushes, or battling leukemia, there's one thing the four sisters keep questioning--will everything turn out okay? Follow modern young women, Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy as they discover themselves and follow their dreams. This lushly-illustrated story is a must-read for fans of Raina Telgemeier's Smile and Sisters, Mariko Tamaki's This One Summer, Svetlana Chmakova's Awkward, and Victoria Jamieson's Roller Girl.

Continuing to read my Christmas swap books from @britt_brooke. She knows that my all-time favorite novel is Little Women. ☺ This was just lovely. Predictable, of course, because I know the original story so well, but that didn't take away from the enjoyment. It cleverly weaves the story with modern themes such as blended families & LGBTQ characters.

⭐⭐⭐⭐/⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Got side tracked with this retelling of the classic Little Women. I wasn‘t sure what to expect, but it was a heart warming retelling. I pretty much laugh and cried during this book. I think is better than having to watch it on PBS. Just my take - 8 out of 10. I totally recommend it.

⭐️ Utterly DELIGHTFUL. ⭐️

Fans of Little Women who love remakes and modern takes on this classic story (and who won‘t mind creative liberties) and who also want to see more diversity will enjoy this graphic novel.

This was a sweet, fun modern adaptation of one of my fav classics. The characters retained their key characteristics, but the time period change gave them the freedom to find out who they really were. One noticeable omission was the financial impact that a child in chemotherapy and a dad recovering from an amputation would have on a struggling family, but there were so many issues explored that I‘ll give it a pass...

Got this modern retelling of little women for my daughters 12th birthday - she read it first and loved it. “A lot of drama, Mum” 😂 she does like drama! Reading it together I definitely enjoyed it (though the 2019 film adaption has my whole heart) - it was a bit wordy in places but it was actually good for her to have a graphic novel with a lot in it to read. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

ElizaMarie @AkashaVampie hmm maybe! I wasn't a fan of the actual book.. But a retelling... its worth the look :) 4y

Diversity of the Sisters on the cover caught my eye which ended up being my favorite thing about the story. Blended family that loves one another. No evil step parents or sisters. A little to much information dumps at times, but overall the modernization into a graphic novel is well done. What I disliked was the exact same thing I disliked in the original: 👇

Crinoline_Laphroaig Amy's temper tantrum & destroying Jo's writing. Always felt like her bad behavior was just excused as 'oh she's just a child.' What she did was horrible. She's spoiled & mean spirited. Yes she does have a redemption at the end, in both the original & this modern retelling but I find her a hard character to like. Could have done with less of obnoxious Amy and more about Meg's character growth. Her descion at end, just kind of came out of the blue. 4y
Crinoline_Laphroaig Of course Beth doesn't die in this one because we have modern medicine. 4y
Crinoline_Laphroaig As for Jo - if ever there was a character that could be rewritten as gay it's Jo. "I hate to think I've got to grow up, and be Miss March, and wear long gowns, and look as prim as a China Aster! It's bad enough to be a girl, anyway, when I like boy's games and work and manners! I can't get over my disappointment in not being a boy." 4y

It's a rare morning in June when it's 64F and a forecast high of 78F. With clouds and wind there's even a bit of a chill in the air! I've got a day full of gardening planned. Since I don't have to rush to beat the heat I'm going to enjoy another Cup of tea and a Chapter of Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy. Diversity of Sisters on the cover caught my eye yesterday at bookstore. 😊

I loved this adaptation! That said, I‘m glad my daughter experienced the original — unabridged — edition first.

The blended family, LGBTQ addition — both worked well. My daughter is excited to reread this one now that I finally read it myself.

The March sisters, 21st century version. I enjoyed this blended family reboot of Little Women. It‘s set in Brooklyn, their father is serving in the military overseas & it‘s told in an appealing #comics format with brightly coloured cartoon images. Journal entries & letters provide a natural check to the momentum of the graphic sequences. Issues of poverty, bullying, war, serious illness, coming out, first love & sibling relationships. #kidlit

Riveted_Reader_Melissa That sounds really good! 5y

I'm not fond of LITTLE WOMEN, but this retelling corrected issues I had with the original. Sometimes the letters to their dad felt clunky and unnatural, like an info dump. The Women's March illustration at the end included some trans-exclusive imagery, which was especially disappointing considering how diverse and inclusive the book otherwise was. Overall, I did enjoy this retelling, and look forward to hearing what my 10yo thinks of it.

Lindy I‘m curious about the trans-exclusive imagery you mentioned. I‘m looking at the two-page spread at the end of the book and I don‘t see it. Please tell me what you meant. 5y
lovelybookshelf @Lindy The pink pussyhats make many trans folks feel excluded, and carry TERFy overtones. For the most part, cis women were very dismissive and didn't want to listen to the reasons why it's hurtful. I felt the book had an opportunity to show solidarity with trans women by leaving those hats out, and was disappointed that they didn't. 5y
Lindy @lovelybookshelf Ah! Thanks for explaining that. 5y

Lindy @lovelybookshelf What did your 10-year-old think of it? Has she read it yet? 5y
lovelybookshelf @Lindy She really loved it, except for those two pages at the end. (We're a queer/trans family, so she picked up on that immediately.) 5y

I read Little Women several times as a kid (Team Jo! Wasn't everyone?), but I don't have the same nostalgic attachment to it that I do to other favorites. That, and the fact that I tend to adore graphic novels made this a great pick for me. I loved the diversity, sisterhood, and getting through crap together as a family. It wasn't perfect, but it will introduce a classic that kids may otherwise miss. It is not Little Women, but it is a good book.

Really enjoyed this modern retelling of Little Women. It really makes you think about true original and the things you don‘t realize about the characters that are so obvious now as an adult. Super cute, fun and full of female empowerment, equality, embracing your identity.

I forgot I was supposed to check-in yesterday. I kept on thinking it was today 🤦🏽‍♀️. It‘s better late then never, I guess. Thanks @wanderinglynn for challenging us to be more health conscious as we enjoy our books! I definitely started moving more this week. I actually played tag with our preschoolers (I‘m sore now 😝). Didn‘t hit my 85,000 steps in a week goal, but I was very close. #BFC #bookfitnesschallenge

Cute adaptation, and I especially liked the addition of the LGBTQ storyline. However, I don‘t know if it was the format, or if they were aiming for a younger audience than the original, but it felt a little rushed and like there was less character growth. The email/journal entry device was interesting, but I think I would have preferred more of the comic panels. 3/5 #marchreads #graphicnovels #adaptations

I. LOVED. THIS. BOOK! I want to press it into everyone‘s hands - whether you like GNs or not, you need to pick this one up! I love that it follows the classic Little Women story, but it has so many great 21st century aspects to it. The March sisters, then and now, are one of my favorite fictional families 💕

Interesting updated adaptation of one of my favourite novels.

Some of the dialogue was awkward, but all in all very approachable. Hopefully it will encourage people to pick up the original.

Stumbled across this at Target today. 150 years!? Well, time I read the UNabridged edition I bought my daughter a couple years ago. Up until then, I thought my mom‘s copy from her childhood was the whole story 🤷‍♀️ Since I was 11, I read an abridged edition every year — not knowing so — until I went away to college! 🤦🏻‍♀️

I started the tagged book today. It is a fairly quick read, but being a fan of Little Women I knew I wanted to read the story. I have found some things in the first 25% that bother me, and maybe I'll post about them in the review. I would say this is at least a four star read so far.
