Wings of the Dove
Wings of the Dove | Henry James
With an Introduction by Nicola Bradbury, University of Reading. The Wings of the Dove is a tale of desire and possession, of love and death. It is in essence a simple story, but one that opens up the great subject of art: life itself. To tackle this, James moves between fairytale storylines and the startlingly modern techniques of his testing late style. An unspeakable subtext lies beneath the silence. Distinct points of view and different centres of consciousness betray the dislocation of the social facade from the desolation beneath. For all the familiar signs, there is a gulf between glamour and the underlying threat of loss. The eternal triangle of romance is played out here like a game on an international stage for the very highest stakes. It centres on 'the dying girl who wants to live - to live and love.' But those closest to her are in competition for what she can leave behind. Milly Theale, 'the heiress of all the ages', is imaged as a dove, a princess, a Renaissance beauty, but these symbols come at a dreadful cost. By the end of the novel we know, 'We shall never be again as we were!'

I‘m just sure you‘ve been waiting with bated breath to hear what I thought of the book that some of you might have wondered if I‘d ever finish. No surprise: I hated it. Full review at https://booknaround.blogspot.com/2023/11/review-wings-of-dove-by-henry-james.htm...

I have finally picked this one back up to try and power through it. It‘s definitely a slog. James likes to hear himself talk/write and circles round again and again and again. It remains to be seen if I make it through before I need to pick up my book club book but I‘m over half way! 🎉🎉🎉

Balibee146 I read this for uni, plus another James, several decades ago and just couldn't get to grips with it. A frustrating convoluted writer for me. 6mo
dabbe Hello there, snuggly kitty! 🖤🐾🖤 6mo
CarolynM I started reading this one for my book group a few years ago. There were sentences in it that I could not make any sense of, no matter how hard I tried. I had to give up🤷🏻‍♀️ 6mo
Ruthiella I joke that I‘ve read this book multiple times because I had to read many sentences twice or three times! And like @CarolynM , I couldn‘t understand all of them…too convoluted. 6mo

Yes, Ozzie, I usually feel the same way about books but I am really struggling with this one!

vivastory Henry James is very much a mixed bag. I find his earlier works are easier for me to get. I do like him & personally when I am in the right frame of mind I think they reward the attention they demand. Sometimes...I really didn't care for What Maisie Knew, lol 1y

KathyWheeler I don‘t normally feel this way, but because Henry James is a writer who uses 100 words when one will do and is sentences can be so convoluted, I find it easier to watch the movies based on his books first so that I have some understanding of the plot going in. (edited) 1y

I finally pulled this off the shelf. It‘s been on the tbr pile longer than anything else (since high school—and since I‘m in my 50s…ashamed shuffling going on). I said I‘d read it for the #pickleschallenge @RaeLovesToRead is hosting but I wasn‘t sure I‘d truly follow through. We‘ll see! #baneofyourbookshelf

RaeLovesToRead Woo! Good luck!!!! Pickles and I are rooting for you! 🥰 2y
KathyWheeler Henry James is always a chore for me; however, I love the movies made from his books. I think reading him is so difficult for me because he will always use 100 words when one will do — and I‘m a wordy person! (edited) 2y
Ruthiella I found this one to be tough going, but I did finish it! Good luck! 👍 2y
ravenlee I‘m limping along with my #Pickleschallenge book myself - after taking August off I finally read another section. Now I‘m all of 250/900-some pages in. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 2y

This one is for @BookNAround 💕

Just in case you thought Pickles had been distracted by morning cuddles... a gentle reminder that she is still very much judging you 😉

If anyone else wishes to join the challenge - all you have to do is pick the book that has been sitting on your shelf the longest or that you have been assiduously avoiding & get it read!

#pickleschallenge #baneofyourbookshelf

I'll do you a special Pickles post when you finish.

The plot is fascinating. A young couple, Kate & Merton, want to marry but don‘t have the money. Enter a rich American heiress Milly, who falls in love w/Merton. Kate realizes Milly is dying and wants Merton to woo her so she will leave her money to him. What follows is complicated by human emotions, guilt, & a trip to Venice. Unfortunately I think James was too long-winded in this one. It lost its emotional punch in a deluge of banal observations.

Was it contractually required that Helena Bonham Carter be cast in 1980s and ‘90s film adaptations of classic novels? I think so.

Kidding aside, I‘ve seen all three pictured productions and enjoyed them as well as the original source material... though I find Henry James‘ later novels to be “sloggy” and in the case of the tagged title, preferred the film over the novel.😀

CarolynM I once tried to read Wings but had to give up because I found there were whole sentences I just could not understand. 4y
Ruthiella @CarolynM I can honestly say, I LITERALLY read it twice, because I read every sentence at least twice if not three or more times (and still didn‘t get it). I saw the movie first, which was helpful. (edited) 4y

HannaPolkadots Vladimir Nabokov once said that reading Henry James feels like physical labor 😅 I love James, but I never read him to relax, because I really have to concentrate on what he's saying. However his sentences are often works of art, I see him as a sculptor of sentences - working at them too perfection ❤ Full disclosure: I did my master's thesis on James, so I am a bit biased 😉 4y
OriginalCyn620 👍🏻📚🎬 4y
Ruthiella @jenniferw88 I ❤️Helena too, though I wonder if she didn‘t long to do more contemporary roles at some point? 🤔 4y
Ruthiella @HannaPolkadots That‘s so cool! 😀You know what I found interesting? Sometimes even when I didn‘t understand each sentence, I still got the mood of the scene...and I thought, “how did he do that?” 4y

I think Henry James and I just don‘t see eye to eye. I liked the bones of the story but almost every sentence had nine or ten clauses (I counted some!) and it felt like a grammar exercise approaching some of them. I found the characters pretty stilted, I read a lot of nineteenth century fiction and this is the first time I‘ve ever gone ‘those aren‘t real people‘. I was surprised when I‘ve seen so much love for this but I just couldn‘t

CarolynM I tried to read this for my book group a few years ago. I got so frustrated I had to bail because I just did not understand what I was reading. I read some sentences multiple times but still couldn't make sense of them! 4y
Liz_M James is an author that I can't read. I decide that I saw the movie for this it counts as read. 😉 😁 4y

Hi all! My brain is suffering a little bit with the isolation and uncertainty so I‘ve been reading much more slowly than usual, but I‘m trying to focus on the positives and I‘m incredibly lucky to have a garden at my parents house on such a warm sunny day. I‘m not getting along great with Henry James unfortunately - does every sentence need to have 9 clauses Henry??? But I‘m finally getting through my tbr!

TrishB Same. Reading so slowly at the moment. Just accepting it for now. 4y
LinesUponAPage That might be my problem too. Not getting done the books i want. I keep having to switch books to see what is actually going to let me want to finish them. Glad you can soak in the garden the sun and nature might help us all! ❤️ 4y

Pleased to report that I enjoyed the latest #modernlibrarytop100 book by Henry James so much more than the other two I read this year. This is a the story of three young people: a couple who can‘t afford to marry, and the wealthy heiress whose money they want. I was eagerly anticipating the denouement from page 1 (I took the precaution of reading the intro to help me understand, so I was aware of the plot before HJ starts it halfway through).

batsy I love those Everyman Library editions 😍 5y

...So I‘m immediately starting the next #modernlibrarytop100 book, which is another Henry James novel.

Took the unusual step of reading the introduction to see if some context might help my enjoyment. It includes these gems:

“The aim of this introduction is to rescue [the book] from a tendency ... to stay away from James‘s late fiction unless their tastes are irredeemably highbrow.”

“[It] is James‘s most erotic novel.”

Here‘s the final result. After purging a bag full of books, setting a few aside to bring to my office, and double stacking most of the shelves, I was able to fit almost all of my books onto the new book case. Definitely going to get another set of shelves to set up next to this one so that I can organize the books more aesthetically. Probably will have to wait a week or two because I want to make my BF do it when he comes home from work.

It has taken me about a month to finish this book. helped by Shmoop, where I re-read every chapter to make sure I knew what had been going on.
It also took so long because I didn't care much about the characters or what would become of them.
And then, suddenly, it gripped me. Especially the development of the characters and the way they relate to what's going on. Suddenly they become so real to me, with their strength and weaknesses. #1001books

Allkat Good to know, I just started reading this one. The story sounds good but I have re-read the first chapter twice. Not easy! But will stick with it.🤓 6y
