Daughter of the Forest: A Sevenwaters Novel 1
Daughter of the Forest: A Sevenwaters Novel 1 | Juliet Marillier
The first book in the epic and compulsively readable Sevenwaters series "I enjoyed it immensely... For an Irish resident, familiar with the mores and customs, Daughter of the Forest had special meaning and relevance." Anne McCaffrey "This saga will hold you entranced" Australian Women's Weekly Daughter of the Forest is a mixture of history and heritage, myth and magic, legend and love. Lord Colum of Sevenwaters is blessed with seven children but it is Sorcha, the youngest child and only daughter, who alone is destined to defend her family and protect their land from the invading Britons. For Sorcha is the only one who escapes the cruel influence of Lady Oonagh, her father's new wife. Exiled from Sevenwaters and cast out into the forest and the terrifying world beyond, Sorcha falls into the hands of the feared enemy. Now she is torn between a life she has always known and a love that only comes once. Fans of Marion Zimmer Bradley, Isobelle Carmody and Robin Hobb will love Juliet Marillier.

This treasure has taken the official spot as my second favorite book. Marillier is not only a master story-teller, world-builder, word-smith, and character developer; she beautifully layers so much meaning and emotion, bittersweet and heart-wrenching, like a literary lasagna. I loved the magic, the ending, the tension, the subtle romance, the themes of sibling relationships, and of trust and perseverance.

Loving this book! It's been a while since I've read a book that captivated me this much. No idea why it's taken me this long to discover this series. This first one was published back in 1999. I won't be able to sleep tonight until I finish this one. Thankful for a Goodreads Facebook post about which books are your favorites. So many great recommendations!

The downside to being on more than one book social is that sometimes you think you posted your review but totally missed one. I finished this at the beginning of the week and enjoyed it. There are some very dark events that take place but in general I found it to be a good read. Normally I find retellings to be hit or miss but I liked the atmosphere created and Sorcha was a compelling narrator.

Managed to finally finish Smoky this week but I didn't get as far as I'd like in the tagged. Work has hit crunch time so it's been 12 hour days and come in on the weekends.

Our big project has to be finished on Monday afternoon so hopefully I can finish something this upcoming week. Probably Daughter of the Forest.

I have a coworker that I have been passing my fantasy books on to once read but, sadly for him, he won‘t be getting this one. I loved it too much to part with. I think this may be one of my favorite fantasy reads ever. Sorcha must complete a painful task in order to save her beloved brothers when they are turned into swans by their stepmother. She also cannot utter a sound until her work is done. Her journey is difficult but she is resilient.

TrishB I loved this one 👍🏻 4y

Praise be to Booktube, w/o which I‘d never have read this. I LOVED it. Oh my Lord, just what I needed. Writing hit just the right note, beautiful & lyrical but not heavy handed. Sorcha is a terrific MC, brave & resilient but still human w/doubt & fear. The 6 brothers were all unique, the bond among the siblings was so moving. Don‘t often cry at books but teared up a few times! Def want to read on tho the 2nd is hard to find at low price. 5/5 ⭐️

alisonrose Only my second 5 star read of the year! 5y
alisonrose Oh and a note: there is a graphic scene of sexual assault on the page, which I was alerted to beforehand and skipped past. If you want to avoid it, in the mass market paperback it‘s from page 198 to 200. 5y

KarouBlue One of my favorites! 5y
alisonrose @intothehallofbooks It was amazing! Just wish I knew why the second book is so elusive! Either gotta fork out 30 bucks (for a MMP!) for new or 12-15 for used... 5y
alisonrose @RaimeyGallant Thanks! If only they‘d follow through on something brought up months ago and expand the character limit... 5y
alisonrose @MellieAntoinette 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻 5y
RaimeyGallant We're on opposite sides of the character limit debate, I'm afraid. :) I think the more characters in a post, the less people will scroll to see more posts. But you're right about it being a pain when we're trying to cleverly squeeze it all in. :) 5y
alisonrose @RaimeyGallant But just adding like 100 more characters would only add a couple more lines to a post, and it‘s really tough to say much of substance with the short amount of space we get 5y
RaimeyGallant Maybe a read-more option like on goodreads would be a good compromise? That way littens can still scroll at the same pace and read more if they want to? 5y

Such was the flood of emotion that there was no holding it back. My mind overflowed with pain and he took it all and never once spoke of it. But it could be read on his face. The worst of it was that I didn‘t care anymore. My brother was a man too. Perhaps it was just that he should share the damage that men have done.

Heroes by Peter Gabriel

Sorcha is not the typical hero type character but I consider her a hero because she she does fight and beat the odds to bring back her family.

I loved this story and I can‘t wait to get back to this world. Sorcha was and still is one of my favorite characters.

Wow! Great storytelling in this book. I remember the story of The Little Nettle Girl whose brothers were enchanted into swans and she had to sew shirts of nettle for them to become human but Marillier takes it to a whole other level. I was engrossed from start to finish; stayed up all night to read! The 7 siblings of Sevenwaters are cursed and the 7th child Sorcha must brave wilds and trials to free them alone & in enemy territory. 📚📚📚📚

Finished my ???th reread this morning and I felt both full and empty-or maybe drained is the more appropriate word. I love Sorcha‘s story with my heart and soul, especially the great lengths that she would go to show her family love and her long, hard journey to finally accepting that she is worthy of love like she gives.

This book is perfect and it is my favorite.

I adore this audiobook. One of my favorite audio purchases. The narrator is Terry Donnelly and her accent is lovely. She sounds exactly what I imagined Sorcha to sound like when I read the book for the first time. She pronounces words so beautifully that I would completely destroy. I highly recommend experiencing it by purchase or library loan!

This book is a total comfort read for me. A favorite. I will sing its praises forever, you guys.

I adore this book and have read it numerous times. It never loses its magic. It is beautifully written and the characters are fully realized, you come to love them. Plus the story itself is wonderful. It is a mix of fantasy and historical fiction, though more the former. Somehow Marillier made a character that doesn't speak wholly compelling. ❤️❤️❤️

In 2015 I mistakenly bought this book on my Nook, mixing it up with "Daughter of the Blood" by Anne Bishop. What a happy accident! This is one of my absolute favorite books. Period. The end. It is terribly painful to read in places: suspenseful, unjust... but equally as beautiful, rousing, and triumphant. I love this book (bonus: it's a series so you can go buck wild!), and I am a total Marillier fangirl because of it.

I feel like it took me a little bit to get into it but I love the subtle introduction of magic to a fairytale and the ending was much more than I expected it to be at the onset.

Bought the next book immediately and regretted putting off the initial reading as long as I did.

Good news! I found 2 of the 3 in the original Sevenwaters trilogy (and another by the author that I've never read) at Half-Price books and ordered the other from Amazon. Wasn't sure if they'd hold up since I first read them 10 years ago but Marillier's world building is fantastic and the first of the trilogy at least is still a good read. Now to wait for the second to arrive!

This #debutnovel by Juliet Marillier is a retelling of the story of the seven swans. Our protagonist is a young woman with brothers who become enchanted.
