Shrill: Notes from a Loud Woman
Shrill: Notes from a Loud Woman | Lindy West
Hailed by Lena Dunham as an "essential (and hilarious) voice for women," Lindy West is ferociously witty and outspoken, tackling topics as varied as pop culture, social justice and body image. Her empowering work has garnered a coast-to-coast audience that eagerly awaits SHRILL, her highly-anticipated literary debut. West has rocked readers in work published everywhere from "The Guardian" to "GQ "to "This American Life." She is a catalyst for a national conversation in a world where not all stories are created equal and not every body is treated with equal respect. SHRILL is comprised of a series of essays that bravely shares her life, including her transition from quiet to feminist-out-loud, coming of age in a popular culture that is hostile to women (especially fat, funny women) and how keeping quiet is not an option for any of us.

I didn‘t find Shrill to be a particularly funny book, despite all the blurbs and reviews calling it “hilarious”, “uproarious”, and “laugh-out-loud funny”. I did, however, find it thought-provoking, and galvanising, and insightful, and surprising, and honest. All of these are wonderful things that don‘t need to make us snort-laugh. I am forever going to be grateful for Lindy West, and specifically this book. It‘s helped me open so many conversations with family members that I otherwise wouldn‘t have had the courage to start. ❤️

Read on Kindle, so have a pic of a massive hot chocolate!

Shrill is a funny & observant collection of essays exploring misogyny in comedy, society's treatment of fat people, vicious internet trolls, love & grief.

Lindy takes no prisoners in her cultural critiques & she makes passionate, persuasive arguments for her opinions.

Our views aren't interchangeable, but Lindy is an important voice in feminism, giving lots of food for thought.

My Kindle has been getting more use lately. I particularly like using it for non-fiction - essay collections, for example.

No reading sesh at 200 degrees would be complete without a smoothie, a chai latte and a big piece of frosted carrot cake 😁

Today I'm back in my usual spot at Al Fresco with an iced latte, avoiding the rain.

KristiAhlers I love all of these life choices! ❤️ 1y

Holy Shit. Laughing, Crying, Anger. I confirm all these happened while reading. I had no idea how much of a force West has been in getting feminist, fat-positive truths out into the world, battling the Trolls of the Internet, the insensitive dicks of comedy and journalism, making a good life for herself, all the while acknowledging where she needed to grow and where those who recognized the errors of their ways began to show growth. Recommended.

Has anyone watched the hour-long cut of Lindy West‘s interview with her husband & their partner, announcing their polyamorous relationship? It‘s behind a $2 Patreon paywall…but I‘m considering paying for it.

One of the most interesting observations to come of the whole thing, I think, is that Lindy‘s noticed people are more loyal to the idea of monogamy than they are insistent upon the unacceptability of fatness. Exposing society‘s tender spots.

monalyisha Here‘s the (free) 28-minute video: https://youtu.be/xWJWx4HnaxY 3y

Soubhiville Thanks for sharing that! I watched the shorter one. I hadn‘t heard about it before. 3y
monalyisha I just went for it. Very little self-control. 😅 Will report back. 3y
monalyisha Update: The longer cut isn‘t a must-watch. Most of the added length just comes from editing choices. Everything that needs to be said is present in the shorter version. I‘m not mad that I effectively watched the interview twice, though! 💗 3y
RaeLovesToRead I recently bought her book because her essay on Love Actually is the funniest thing I've read. Plan to read it soon! 💕 3y
monalyisha @RaeLovesToRead She has a newsletter you can sign-up for, too, where she continues to review questionable movies. It‘s called BUTT NEWS. 🍑 I can‘t even with her. 😂 She‘s a wonderful human. 3y

🚨PSA:

While I don‘t have *zero* skills, I‘ve never had the patience to actually learn how to do makeup properly. Lindy West recently sought help from her sister-in-law, Ijeoma Oluo, author of So You Want To Talk About Race? I watched the tutorial. Because, of course.

It was the only way I was ever going to watch a full beauty tutorial. And it‘s only now that I feel brave & competent enough to rock winged eyeliner for the first time in my life.

monalyisha I should note that I‘m 35; it‘s not like I‘m new. 😅 Tutorial here: https://www.instagram.com/tv/CNx242AlUag/?utm_medium=copy_link (edited) 3y

"When I think back on my teenage self, what I really needed to hear wasn't that someone might love me one day if I lost enough weight to qualify as human - it was that I was worthy of love now, just as I was." - Lindy West

Finished this book yesterday and felt seen by this quote, especially growing up hearing the very same thing said to me by one family member in particular. It felt validating.

? Lindy & Aham looking ? on their wedding day.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I agree! I want to say there is a lost generation of us...but generations is probably more accurate. I think the turning point to not caring so much was when I took care of my 92 year old grandmother, who at 92 was still worried about being fat, commenting on others fatness, and didn‘t want you to tell anyone her age. It was then that I thought, what a waste of time all that worry is, we all grow older and we all eat...don‘t waste your life ⤵️ 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Stressing about it. 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa And I should add she was a tiny little lady who was obsessed about it, and I refuse to be an old lady worried about 5 pounds or 105 pounds, not now and not if I‘m lucky enough to live to 92. 🙄 4y

Hooked_on_books I love Lindy West. I feel like she‘s exactly what I need. She‘s fierce and fabulous and tells it like it is. And @Riveted_Reader_Melissa my goodness, that is such a waste! So many negative emotions are wastes of our time and so much effort we don‘t need to expend! How sad that this has been the way for too many women. 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Hooked_on_books Right! I was so excited for her long life and accomplishments. I remember saying to someone once, she‘s almost 93, and she was aghast...don‘t tell them that, I‘m only 92. I was more proud of her age, she was ashamed of it. If I make it to 92 I‘m telling everyone and bragging! 😂 4y
Hooked_on_books @Riveted_Reader_Melissa As you should! You could even lie and say you were over 100. 😬😉😆 4y
Librariana @Riveted_Reader_Melissa - Agreed! It is such a waste of energy to worry so much about the opinions of others, especially if these are strangers. A friend of mine once said that people don't think about us as much as we *think* they do. Trying to gain people's approval is completely different from gaining their acceptance. 4y
Librariana @Riveted_Reader_Melissa - Making it past 90 is indeed quite an accomplishment and it ought to be celebrated! 4y
Librariana @Hooked_on_books - Holly, this was the first book by her I've ever read and I'm eager to get to 4y
Hooked_on_books I enjoyed Witches, because I love Lindy, but Shrill has a special place in my heart. I actually got her to sign my copy at the Portland Book Festival a few years ago and fan-girled all over her. She‘s just amazing. 4y

This is my 3rd time reading this book, and it really helps me when I‘m down about being fat. One of her best pieces of advice is to look at pictures of fat people doing normal things. Thanks to her, I follow many influencers on Instagram that are fun, fat, & give great beauty advice!

This book also does a great job of calling out rape culture in comedy & internet trolling and normalizing abortion. She hits the right voice between serious & light!

Great collection of essays covering fatphobia, trolling, censorship, feminism (obvs), rape culture and grief. I would recommend reading it before watching the tv series (also excellent) as I think it would provide a bit more depth and context to the show. Very inspiring read for anyone who needs confidence to call out BS when they see it!

There's not much I can say that hasn't been said about this collection of #essays. Just that I'm late to the game and so glad I've finally read it. I have watched a few episodes of the series on Hulu but can't wait to watch the rest. Also, adored her second collection "The Witches are Coming" possibly even more because I read it as soon as it came out which means everything was very current. If you haven't already, read both! #audiobook

When I first picked this book up 2-3 years ago, I read the first chapter and thought "nah." It just wasn't the right time, but now, omg. Lindy is able to articulate every argument I have in my head where the words don't reach my mouth. She seems like the type of person you could form an instant connection with. I loved this book, she's gained a lifelong fan. I'm silently in her corner, inwardly cheering from afar
