Call the Midwife: Shadows of the Workhouse
Call the Midwife: Shadows of the Workhouse | Jennifer Worth
34 posts | 52 read | 13 to read
The sequel to Jennifer Worth's New York Times bestselling memoir and the basis for the PBS series Call the MidwifeWhen twenty-two-year-old Jennifer Worth, from a comfortable middle-class upbringing, went to work as a midwife in the direst section of postwar London, she not only delivered hundreds of babies and touched many lives, she also became the neighborhood's most vivid chronicler. Woven into the ongoing tales of her life in the East End are the true stories of the people Worth met who grew up in the dreaded workhouse, a Dickensian institution that limped on into the middle of the twentieth century.Orphaned brother and sister Peggy and Frank lived in the workhouse until Frank got free and returned to rescue his sister. Bubbly Jane's spirit was broken by the cruelty of the workhouse master until she found kindness and romance years later at Nonnatus House. Mr. Collett, a Boer War veteran, lost his family in the two world wars and died in the workhouse. Though these are stories of unimaginable hardship, what shines through each is the resilience of the human spirit and the strength, courage, and humor of people determined to build a future for themselves against the odds. This is an enduring work of literary nonfiction, at once a warmhearted coming-of-age story and a startling look at people's lives in the poorest section of postwar London.

The first half was tough to read-mistreated, brutalized orphans, siblings being separated, and the life of those who stayed at the workhouses😫

I found the first part of this book quite hard work to read which coincidentally is the part about the workhouse. I found the second and third parts about sister Monica-Joan and Mr Collett much better and read these parts much quicker. It‘s awful to think that all of it was true and happened in the last 100-120 years. Again it was amazing to see so much of the tv was true!

The opening section, of children and families in a workhouse, is so horrific I had to take breaks for nausea -- I haven't had to do that since reading a Holocaust memoir.

A pick. Moving and powerful, and I highly respect Worth's strongly compassionate approach.

This, unlike the first book, was focused on the horrors of the workhouse and the people who grew up there. The stories about Jane and Frank & Peggy were tragic and disturbing. I loved Jenny‘s relationship with Mr Collett, a veteran of the Boer War. Also included was the trial of Sister Monica Joan.

The quality remains great, but I prefer the other two because they focus more on Jenny's experiences specifically. Still, the depictions of life in the workhouse and during the Boer War are incredible. #memoir

Had I not come across books 2&3 from this series in an LFL, I would not have borrowed and fallen in love with Book 1. Here, Book 2 is equally interesting focusing less on Jenny and more on people from the workhouses influencing her life.

Any Call the Midwife fans here? Oh my heart..? the relationship between Jenny and Mr. Collett cracked my soul wide open. I love how this series brings to light so many life lessons learned through hardships.

"You know the secret of life, my dear, because you know how to love."

The BBC TV series is excellent, but the books take you to a whole different level. To those who aren't familiar with it - it is based on true stories.

Book 2 in the Call the Midwife series. Heartbreaking at times, but well worth the read. The narrator did a good job of conveying the emotions. Insightful and touching.

Call the Midwife, book 2.

This follow-up is less focused on the author‘s midwife training and covers fewer patients‘ stories, albeit more deeply. Lots about the legacy of workhouses and the experiences of soldiers and their families during and after wartime. Pretty grim, but Sister Monica Joan provided some much needed comic relief.

Jennifer Worth wrote her #memoirs about her time as midwife and nurse in London's poor district Poplar in the '50s. I'm so glad times have changed in Europe. The books are worth a read, but to be honest I prefer the tv show.

PickwickPlockPlock @youneverarrived The series has used all the material from the books in the first seasons. The books are interesting because they are based on facts, but the series developed the characters. In other words, I don't think you are missing much! 6y

On this audiobook, for the first time I'm trying the speed-up feature, listening to it at 1.25x speed. Although it sounds a little rushed it's not TOO distorted, and I'll probably experiment with it more with future audiobooks. I'm curious what other people do - I've been hesitant to do it for some reason but it would be nice to get through books faster and be able to listen to more.

Oryx I'm really interested in what speed people listen at too. Meant to post a question about it too. I was initially appalled when my partner said he was listening to A Little Life at x1.5, but now I've tried speeding up and you really get used to it. I think x1.35 is about the fastest for me without distracting distortion. I've been listening at that for a while now. 7y
DGRachel I only speed up if I can't stand the narrator but really want to get through the book. I listened to one short story at 1.5, which was distracting, but so much better than normal speed and I listened to one entire book at 1.25 which was the fastest I could go without distortion. Usually though, if I can't listen at normal speed, I bail and read it in print. 7y
leslieisreading @DGRachel I like the narrator on this, but she stretches some dialogue out and I don't feel like I'm losing too much by having it a little sped up. I can't even bring myself to try listening to it any faster than 1.25 though! 7y
See All 6 Comments
leslieisreading @Oryx I haven't been brave enough to try 1.5 yet 😝 I don't think I'll speed up every book. Probably will end up doing it selectively. 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage My fav speed is 1.25 but sometimes I want to savor the book and / or narrator, so I'll go with 1.0. 7y
leslieisreading @BarbaraTheBibliophage there are definitely some audio productions that I would never want to tamper with by messing with the speed. I'm starting to think that 1.25 might be a good general speed for a lot of the books I listen to though. 7y

This book provides so much context about the dreaded workhouse, which I've seen referenced in many books set in 19th century England, but previously only had the vaguest understanding of.

I finished listening to The Hating Game yesterday (😍😍😍), so it's on to the next audiobook. I listened to the first in this trilogy a couple years ago and really loved it, but the second wasn't available in my library's Overdrive. Then I realized that I could recommend it, and my library bought it, and I was happy. 😊

I really like this book. It was a bit different from the first one. This didn't focuss so much in the midwife part of Jenny's life. It told the stories of few people and a few specific events. They were all very touching and in sister Monica Joan's case very funny. I liked reading more about workhouses. The stories were shocking and sad but still it was real history.

My #nonfictionnovember2016 hasn't gone as I originally planned. I haven't read that many books of that genre because the one I started with was so deep, dark and depressing that I needed a break. Now I'm ready to get back in line with this. I so enjoyed the first book. I hope this is just as good.

Suzze Call the Midwife! 💜 7y
Martta @Suzze Yes! I so love the non-fiction books that tell about the society from a different angle. I think I need to watch the tv-series when I'm done with these three books. 7y

I usually try to read as different books as possible. Meaning when I read for example a detective book after that I will read something like non-fiction or possibly an historical story. I'll try to read all the books in the image during November but probably will add some fiction into the mix. #photoadaynov16 #nonfictionnovember #TBR

TrishB I do that too! Never same genre in a row 😀 7y
Martta @TrishB Oh good! I have found that if I read several same styled books in a row I can not separate the events and characters so well. It also stays more interesting that way. 7y

Unflinching, transporting memoir-as-social-history/creative non-fiction treatment of the traumatic and taboo with tender and galvanizing sensitivity. Would have been worth my time just for the trial of nonagenarian esoteric philosopher Sister Monica Joan, conducted in part in Cockney rhyming slang. Nicola Barber's audio narration is first-class. A different experience than the first book or the television series and my preferred so far.
