Winner of the National Jewish Book Award, "a triumphantly moving book."* Hannah is tired of holiday gatherings all her family ever talks about is the past. In fact, it seems to her that's what they do every Jewish holiday. But this year's Passover Seder will be different Hannah will be mysteriously transported into the past . . . and only she knows the unspeakable horrors that await. *"Kirkus Reviews," pointer review"

Looking at my TBR list, I decided to read Attack of the Black Rectangles. When I read the summary, it occurred to me to read this first. I was bummed to see that I'd be reading about the holocaust. I'm still traumatized by the last book I read a couple of years ago and took a break. It also occurred to me that I have only read one other book by Yolen, and now I can say that she's a genius. This book was amazing.

TheBookHippie One of my favorites - I‘ve read all her books. 2y
mandarchy @TheBookHippie the other book I've read, is Sword of a Rightful king, and I loved it. I may have read Briar Rose too... but it was in 2005, so I'm not certain. I see her books all the time and need to open them! 2y
TheBookHippie @mandarchy I am always so happy to see people reading her books. She really is fantastic to read! I love her older chapter books but her pictured books are so fun as well! 2y
mandarchy @TheBookHippie I have read a lot of her picture books, I have just neglected her chapter books. Her dinosaur series illustrated by Teague is a staple in my library. I also have her Here There Be series and no one ever checks them out and they look beautiful. I should just read them. I don't know what I am waiting for. But based on circulation, I should weed them, but I CAN'T! They look so amazing. 2y

Episode 199 of my book podcast features a real subject matter expert… who also happens to be a listener! Dr. Samantha Vinokor-Meinrath is a Jewish educator and author and was the perfect person to join me for a conversation about the stunning, heartbreaking THE DEVIL‘S ARITHMETIC. I learned so much from Samantha and loved talking with her. Link to listen in my bio!

Good historical novels can get the reader interested in certain time period, event or person, while curiosity and the desire to learn are fueled by many things, interest being one of them. The story‘s modern feel will make the story more real while the time travel aspect will help draw a young reader in. The number of Holocaust survivors is diminishing so stories like this become even more important to bear witness and keep the memory alive.

#ucflae3414f19 The Devils Arithmetic is a book that you cannot put down once you get into it. This book is about a young Jewish girl who experiences the holocaust and what her family endured through this devastating time period. I think this book best fits students in the 5th or 6th grade as it is more on the mature side.

Shannyblake I think this book best fits students in the 5th or 6th grade as it is more on the mature side. I would use this book as a way to open my classroom up to what the holocaust was and how it affected millions. This would be ideal for shared reading, as the class would share their thoughts and opinions of what we read.
5y
Shannyblake The lesson plan I would use for this book is https://www.cpalms.org/Public/PreviewResourceLesson/Preview/29360

The UDL Guidelines that match this book are Offer ways of customizing the display of information (1.1) and the ESOL Strategy I would use is 1. Teach questioning for clarification

DrSpalding Nice job aligning universal design and English learner strategies. Good idea to use the Florida Department of education lesson plan resource site as your resource. 5y

4.5/5⭐ Everything a book about the Holocaust should be: brutal and important. Appropriately, I finished this book about the necessity of remembering today on #YomHaShoah, #HolocaustRemembranceDay.

I have met survivors from concentration camps, and my great grandparents were Orthodox Jews who immigrated in the early 1900‘s. So I am glad to share @Cinfhen ‘s link about Israel‘s National Holocaust Remembrance Day and a book that I always thought gave perspective. https://www.illuminatethepast.org/

Cinfhen I‘ve been meaning to read this book💔thanks for putting it back on my radar and thank you for sharing the link 🙏🏻 6y
LibrarianRyan @Cinfhen this was one of my favorites growing up. Made me a lifelong Yolan fan. 6y
Cinfhen Have either of you seen the controversial IG account that launched a few days ago @LibrarianRyan @Chrissyreadit it‘s called Eva.Stories It‘s based on an actual diary of a girl named Eva who was living in Hungry before & during the Nazi invasion. Told through IG stories it‘s a photo journal retelling of Eva‘s real experience. It‘s a powerful visual!! 6y
See All 7 Comments
Chrissyreadit @Cinfhen why is it. Controversial? @LibrarianRyan thanks for more info. I‘m going to look it up. 6y
Cinfhen Because some people feel using social media and making “Eva” a #hashtag is trivializing the Holocaust. That it marginalizes the true horror. I think it‘s a powerful teaching tool for this generation 🤷‍♀️ 6y
LibrarianRyan @Cinfhen I don't do instagram since it is owned by Facebook. But I had one for my library because you are correct, it is a great way to connect to the younger generation. Josh as an account, so I will take a peak when I get home. It sound interesting. 6y
Chrissyreadit @Cinfhen @LibrarianRyan I‘m watching it and am very impressed. And heartbroken. #neverforget 6y

Wow, this book really got to me. Books about the Holocaust are always so hard to read, but I found this one especially brutal. It was just such a good story, though. A modern-day Jewish girl is transported back in time to experience life during the time of the Holocaust. It gives her perspective on how her family members survived.

An interesting time travel story and a great read. It also lets younger readers identify with the horrors of the Holocaust from a teenager‘s perspective. During Passover Seder, 13-yr-old Hannah, who doesn‘t care much about her family heritage, is transported back to Poland in 1941. There she experiences the life in a concentration camp, or ‘death factory‘ as is known, and learn of the struggles of her family and the Jewish people.

A complete insight into a Jewish concentration camp through the eyes of a young girl. It opened my eyes and began my obsession with world war two literature. A phenomenal rendition with eye opening exerpts and heart wrenching retellings.

This HF novel is great for a LC, and IR I love this book. I recall first reading it in the 6th grade and it has always been a book that I constantly think about. It is about a girl, Hannah, who hates attending her family's Passover Seder. She does not appreciate or care about her culture and the past. During the Seder, she is transported back in time to WWII to experience the Holocaust in a concentration camp.

DominiqueL http://www.cpalms.org/Public/PreviewResourceLesson/Preview/29360 Cpalms provides a lesson on how and why the setting change in the book has an impact on the characters and the story.

Well. This was probably one of the hardest books to read since I read The Kite Runner. This is historical fiction. A girl named Hannah gets transported back into time right before WWII. She is then Chaya, a Jewish farm girl who's got memories of being Hannah, & knows that Nazi's are dangerous & that they all shouldn't get on the trains... As the story progresses she slowly forgets who she used to be... check out: www.janeyolen.com #ucflae3414sp17

CaitlinPVeal This sounds super interesting! Do you think this would be good for a 6th grade classroom? I think it would be a great lit circle book if so! I also like that you put the authors website. 8y
BrielleR @CaitlinPVeal I think it is appropriate for 6th graders! I think it's a great book to use for literature circles! 8y

I read this while my son was reading it for school so we could discuss it as he had questions. Tough subject matter but good themes of the resilience the human spirit and a strong reminder of the importance of remembrance so we never repeat history.

This book was amazing, harrowing, heartbreaking. This is a Jewish fictional tale about a young girl, Hannah, transported back to 1942 and experiencing first hand the atrocities of war and the concentration camps. It was utterly compelling and heartbreaking in equal measure. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

shawnmooney It reminds me of Octavia Butler's 'Kindred,' about a 1970s African-American woman transported back to the days of slavery in the Deep South. 9y
Eatingbooksforbreakfast Ooh I've read that too....and loved it. Not read any other of Butler's books, so if you have any recommendations...? 9y
