This is a wonderful story to read to children that shows them that anything is possible if you try hard enough to succeed

#BabyBookMail today!

Our local library got some funding for Dolly Parton's Imagination Library so of course we signed up! Took some time to come in but our first book came today.

My birthday is coming up on September 2nd, and I‘m strongly considering getting a tattoo referencing my favorite children‘s book (or a few other things). I found this pic online and love it. Hubby doesn‘t like it, but he also doesn‘t love this book as much as I do. What do you all think? I‘m a bit sad we can‘t comment with pics, because I‘d love to see everyone‘s literary tattoos.

The Little Engine That Could by Watty Piper is a classic TL/F-PR/RA/CR book that many of us know and love. In this book, a train,
that has very important toys and candies inside for the children on the other side of the mountain, breaks down. The toys ask different engines if they can pull them, but none can. Until then little blue engine comes along and proves that even if you‘re small, you can do big things! #UCFLAE3414SP21

melodyp UDL 9.1 (promote expectations and beliefs that optimize motivation) and EL 17 (provide contextual support though audio visuals, models, demonstrations, etc) are good strategies to use.
This website has the movie version of this book which would be so fun for the students to watch as a treat at the end of the unit! https://www.amazon.com/Little-Engine-that-Could/dp/B088K2XVJ4

PatriciaS This is a wonderful picture book 📚 great read aloud to encourage those struggling students. Great pick for classroom library 😊. Thank you for your review and resources. 4y
DrSpalding This book has a message that all students should hear… They can all do big things! This should be a read aloud that of course you could watch the movie as well, in kindergarten and first grade. 4y

valeriegeary @Hestapleton it's a flip page spread! (I made that up I don't know if that's what you call it...I wish I could show you a video. 😄) The page in the middle is trimmed so that the booked 2021 title stays visible as you flip the page to summer and fall. I'm going to color in the top section of the boxes when I finish and obviously write the titles inside the main box. I'll show more pictures as I go. 4y

This book is good because it teaches a lesson to the children about not giving up and having hope in yourself to accomplish things even if you have doubt.

“I think I can, I think I can”. In this moment, the children can start saying it with the train because it is repeated so often.

I would read this book to a younger aged classroom. There is a lot of emotions that children feel reading this book from sadness for the children to hopefulness for the little engine. It‘s such a fantastic book.

I love this book. As a child, I always sympathized for the children in the town that needed wanted their toys. Everything in this story is very well done. The illustrations are incredibly detailed and the writing is easy enough for any child to understand. I adore this book and even remember the plot several years after reading it.

The Little Engine That Could by Watty Piper is an F book that is considered to be an American fairytale (so maybe it is a TL), and it would be great for an S or an RA. It is a cute story about a train who thinks she can (and, spoiler alert, she does)! Find a lesson plan at www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/little-engine-could-teaching-plan/ #LAE3414sp19

alexandracarpenter The UDL I would apply to this is 8.1 - heighten salience of goals and objectives, because it is about reaching goals! The ESOL strategy I would use is 14 - simplify your speech by making it slower and redundant. 6y
caldwellalex95 @alexandracarpenter This picture book was easily one of my favorites when I was a child! I almost used it for one of my Litsy posts as well! This book is so cute and the underlying message is so special. Thank you for providing a lesson plan provided by Scholastic. Scholastic is very reliable and I enjoy their resources. Thank you for sharing your feelings about this book! 6y
Zmohammad Wow, this is fantastic! The ESOL strategy is excellent for all students to comprehend the story. 😁 6y
jessicabaksh Kids really do like this book and it does teach a great message. Your UDL principle fits perfectly with this book! 6y

Who here reads to their children? If so what kind of books do you read to them? Ages? 😃

#RaisingReaders

ravenlee I read everything to my daughter! I started reading novels to her while nursing when she was about a year old. We went through scores of books by the time she weaned! She is an avid reader herself, but I still read to her during her snack times (novels) and we read picture books to each other. 6y
Butterfinger My favorite time of the day is when I snuggle with my 7 year old and she reads to me. Right now she is into DogMan. I read to her from my book while she goes to sleep. 6y
TheBookAddict My stepson reads to us. He really enjoys the Wimpy Kid series. He‘s 9yo. (edited) 6y
See All 10 Comments
Cailey_Mac My parents read to us every night; I remember the earliest book was this illustrated kids version of the Bible(we not hugely religious, but the pictures made it really fun), and then after we would pick a book. I know I really enjoyed it, and it helped shape me into the reader I am today! 6y
WhatThePuck We have abridged versions of Frankenstein, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and Dickens classics. We have a full illustrated version of The Wizard of Oz. Currently reading a version of Beauty and the Beast over and over bc he "doesn't know this page yet." He won't give a book up for another until he can give me a page by page synopsis. We read anything else we have. Those are just his favorite. He turned 4 on New Year's Eve. 6y
Littlestbookshelf We have read to our 2 year old since birth. Now that he is 2 he won‘t sit still to listen but I keep going until he comes over to me and says “the end” and closes the book. Hopefully it‘s just a phase! His room is done in “book theme” 😂 so hopefully he likes reading! 6y
Princess-Kingofkings We homeschool and our 12 year old so who's getting read to ~ some of that may be that he doesn't love to read, weirdo! I enjoy reading history to him while he enjoys when I read science to him. (We are studying reptiles right now, yuck.) 6y
sixgun I homeschool and I read every night to my now 6 year old. She likes repetition (who doesn't) so we often read the same book for weeks at a time. But then she'll take a suggestion. Her reading skills are quite good and she's reading many of her favorite on her own. I know that every time we sit down to read, she calms, and she learns. 6y
SleepyDragon 3 yr olds - mostly boardbooks and picture books, but we are starting to branch into early readers. Going to start workbooks and letter/number soon to prep for prek next year ... if they ever figure out the potty. Lol I haven't read to the 11 yr old in years, for a while in 2nd grade we were reading Magic Treehouse books together, till he started reading ahead. He's definitely a solo reader, but likes to listen in when we read to the little ones. 6y
Tianarose I have read to all three of my kids since birth. Now I have three voracious readers on my hands. 😍😍📚📖 6y

Well this just gave me a little buoyancy. I set my reading challenge at 50 last year and didn't reach it. I've read larger books the last 2 years and a toddler, now preschooler, that requires all of my attention. I wasn't sure I'd make it this year either! Gone are the days of my 125 book challenge that was surpassed.

JennyM I‘m just coming out the other end of little kidsville and having more time to read - I feel you, hang in there, the books will be waiting 😘 6y
WhatThePuck @JennyM I have a 12 year old, but I just don't remember not reading any less than I did before. Maybe because I didn't have previous book challenges to look back on. Or maybe because she slept better and I wasn't as exhausted. 🤷🤷 I need to start counting the books I read to him. How many times can I count The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in a year??? 😂 6y
Elizabeth2 I feel ya! I‘m on the other side of little kids too, and had a couple great reading years. But then I started working, my parents aged & needed more of my time and my kids are in a ton of activities now. 🤷‍♀️ I have ten more books to go as well, and was on track. But just got a book club book that‘s 1,000 pages long. I‘m cramming in a few more before I start that one! 😬 6y

Gezemice I remember those days. You are still reading twice as much as I did back then! Great job! 6y
Prairiegirl_reading “Comparison is the thief of joy” Theodore Roosevelt. Spending time with your little ones is what you need to do right now. Enjoy being present. When they‘ve grown and spread their wings then enjoy being present with books. Also (if you want to compare) the average American reads 12 books a year and you are well beyond that. In October. It‘s all good, as long as you enjoy it! 🤗 6y
WhatThePuck @Elizabeth2 @Gezemice 🤗🤗🤗. I also just thought about the fact that I went back to work 5 days a week the last 2 years too. I used to work 3 - 12 hour shifts and be off 4-5 days in a row. I'm sure that accounts for something. I also used to read at work when I had to sit with confused patients for 12 hours. 6y
WhatThePuck @Prairiegirl_reading how true. I usually try not to. I'm always reminded that I read way more than average even if it is a fraction of what I used to read. After the year I read 130 books I cut my reading challenge way down. I felt that I was reading to reach that goal and not for fun and by the end of the year I couldn't keep all of the books straight and would have to read most of the synopsis before I remembered what it was about. 6y
