Winter's Tale
Winter's Tale | William Shakespeare
124 posts | 96 read | 1 reading | 28 to read
The Winter's Tale is one of Shakespeare's most varied, theatrically self-conscious, and emotionally wide-ranging plays. This 2007 edition provides a newly-edited text, a comprehensive introduction that takes into account current critical thinking, and a detailed commentary on the play's language designed to make it easily accessible to contemporary readers. Much of the play's copiousness inheres in its generic intermingling of tragedy, comedy, romance, pastoral, and the history play. In addition to dates and sources, the introduction attends to iterative patterns, the nature and cause of Leontes' jealousy, the staging and meaning of the bear episode, and the thematic and structural implications of the figure of Time. Special attention is paid to the ending and its tempered happiness. Performance history is integrated throughout the introduction and commentary. Textual analysis, four appendices - including the theatrical practice of doubling, and a select chronology of performance history - and a reading list complete the edition.

Actual photo of me when the king swore that the Oracle of Delphi lied about his wife not cheating on him, and his son immediately died. Otherwise I hated this. The story is horrible, and I listened to the worse quality audio recording I‘ve ever encountered. It sounded like someone put a tall mic in front of a stage and just ran the stage play. 😂 So hard to hear, except when they played loud trumped fanfares 😦 #Shakespeare

Kenyazero Admittedly, I mostly read this because I needed something older than 1800 and a Shakespeare play for two different reading challenges on The Storygraph. 1y

Still so chuffed about getting that iconic stage direction! Also, this play is fucking weird, is it a tragedy w/wacky bits? A comedy that starts hella dark? A mishmash of both & 5 other things? Yes to all. And I liked it! Very readable, has some great speeches from female chars, kooky but not slapstick, a wild twist & basically a happily ever after? Shakespeare was in his feels. Fun, weird, & GAY, Leontes & Polixenes were def doing it. 4/5 ⭐️

The Winters Tale | William Shakespeare

What u do
Still betters what is done. When u speak, sweet,
I‘d have u do it ever. When u sing,
I‘d have u buy & sell so, so give alms,
Pray so; & for the ord‘ring yr affairs,
To sing them too. When u do dance, I wish u
A wave o‘ th‘ sea, that u might ever do
Nothing but that, move still, still so,
And own no other function. Each yr doing,
So singular in each particular,
Crowns what u are doing in the present deeds,
That all yr acts are queens

alisonrose For God‘s sake, Litsy, give us more space in posts so I don‘t have to resort to u and yr in a damn Shakespeare quote to make it fit!!! 😠 4y

Though technically a comedy, there is plenty of tragedy in the first three acts, with Leontes‘ paranoia as dangerous and baseless as Henry VIII‘s, or Trump‘s, for that matter. The action moves along at a fast clip, and though I missed many fine points, I was pleased to find it easier to read than expected. It‘s been over a decade since I read Shakespeare, and the first time I read simply for my own pleasure. Love Paulina.

Michael_Gee Sculpture: “Zenobia in Chains” by Harriet Hosmer, c.1859 (St. Louis Art Museum). Hosmer was a feminist and this sculpture represented, to quote the curator, of “woman‘s ability to move beyond the constraints placed on her. Zenobia‘s bearing stresses her strength rather than victimization,” which also exemplifies Hermione, not to mention Paulina, who accepts no constraints society may put on her. 4y

I like Shakespeare, but this was a rather odd mixture of tragedy and comedy and neither really drew me in. I found myself kind of bored, although the later acts of comedy where definitely more interesting for me.

For #Popsugar this year, I had to read two books that share the same title. I read this one and Helprin‘s Winter‘s Tale.

Friends, I wasn‘t crazy about either of them. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Stuff and nonsense. I struggled to get into this, hence I fell far behind the #shakespearereadalong. Leontes, King of Sicilia, has a ridiculous hissy fit and thereby causes heedless death and suffering. Sixteen years later, Polixenes, King of Bohemia, has a hissy fit of his own which makes everything right in the end (if you can forget said death and suffering). And as for that ending?! Nope!
I liked Paulina. I loved the language. And that's all.

The Winters Tale is based off Robert Greene‘s Pandosto, it‘s kind of like Shakespeare‘s dramatization of the story. My edition to includes some excerpts from Pandosto (20 pages worth)... it‘s an elegantly written work on its own, even if it goes a bit silly in the comedy parts.

#shakespearereadalong

batsy Is this the Signet edition? I have the Signet one and there's quite a chunk of an excerpt as well, I should read it ☺️ 5y
Graywacke @batsy yes, Signet Classic. I‘m still working through the commentary stuff. The Greene excerpts are rewarding. Not sure about the rest. 5y
merelybookish Oh thanks for posting that! There doesn't need to be a reason for Leontes's jealousy because jealousy isn't reasonable! 5y
Graywacke @merelybookish yes...actually. I hadn‘t thought about that because in Greene‘s version there is good reason for suspicion. 5y

I admire this play more than I love it. It's a hard play to connect with emotionally, but there's so much going on that speaks to Shakespeare's maturity. It takes the jealousy & patriarchal poison of Othello & reworks it with the pastoral fantasy of As You Like It. But danger intrudes into this fantasy: there are pick-pocketing tricksters & bears to watch out for 🐻 The themes of art/rebirth/nature are aspects that I'll be mulling over for awhile.

batsy This is another one where I'm torn between a "Pick" and a "So-so"! Thanks for hosting @merelybookish I loved the fun weekly challenges, and thanks to fellow readers for the interesting discussions this month #shakespearereadalong ? 5y

GingerAntics This is a really good way to explain this play. I was torn between a pick (it was a pretty good play and has some interesting possibilities for any production) and a so-so. In the end it‘s just in the so-so end of the spectrum. 5y
merelybookish Great review! I think I like this better than you or @gingerantics. I like the characters and am intrigued by what he's trying to pull off. I also suspect it works better on stage. (Probably true of all his plays. 😆) 5y
batsy @GingerAntics @merelybookish Thank you both! The characters are very interesting and there's a lot to chew on here. I'll be interested to know how I feel when I revisit it again in the future. At the moment it all didn't hang together well for me, which is largely why I went with a so-so. 5y
GingerAntics @merelybookish I ended up going so-so over pick for the same reason @batsy did. I would love to see a production of it. I feel like that would tip me toward pick. 5y

I realise that I'm very much out of the loop where younger actors are concerned. A lot of the teen TV shows I enjoy are pure #braincandy and I can't imagine any of the actors taking on Shakespearean roles 😆 However I did enjoy Eliza Scanlen's unnerving performance in Sharp Objects and would cast her as Perdita. An interesting switch from the dark and grim to a role that symbolises rebirth, hope, and love.

#ShakespeareReadAlong @merelybookish

The ending was not what I expected at all. It was like Leontes got a personality transplant or his meds were finally properly regulated. So weird and random, not to mention the explanation of how he recognised a daughter he saw once when she was just 2 days old just doesn‘t work for me. This wasn‘t one of Shakespeare‘s better plays.
#shakespeare #shakespearereadalong #thewinterstale

Faibka I can only agree. It‘s like the first half is a slaughterhouse and the second everyone is signing and dancing and everything gets quickly resolved. Like wtf Will? Lol 5y
batsy @Faibka Hahaha! Yes, that's an accurate description. There's a lot that I admire about what's going on thematically and stylistically in the play, but I can't emotionally connect to it in a way that makes me love it. Which took me by surprise! I thought I was going to love it :) 5y
GingerAntics @Faibka @batsy exactly...it‘s good, but there was nothing to connect with. If it had stayed the slaughterhouse, I probably would have liked it more. I‘m trying to remember if I ever emotionally connected to it. It almost seems like two separate plays smushed together. He‘s got plays that are so good. This just isn‘t one of them. 5y
merelybookish I guess they can't all be winners. This and Cymbeline has made me interested in his romances, and what he was trying to do. Maybe we'll dive into the Tempest sometime. 5y

#shakespearereadalong #shakespeare #thewinterstale

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Yep! Just save it until a bit later so you have something for the next 2 weeks. 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I love this graphic too, by the way 5y
GingerAntics @Riveted_Reader_Melissa It may take me that long to come me with someone for that role. lol I don't know any teenage actresses. lol I Google The Winter's Tale and there is was. It seemed a good fit so I went with it. It's from the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company's production of it. Apparently they're doing it on March. (edited) 5y

I‘m type-casting (young) Will Ferrell as Clown. #shakespearereadalong @merelybookish

merelybookish Interesting! 👍 That would clearly establish the humour! 5y
GingerAntics Ooooooooh I can't believe I didn't think of this. Yes. Absolutely yes!!! 5y

Well, I finally got my Sicilia side all together, and I‘m adopting your Time @GingerAntics

I‘ll work on Bohemia later this week, after I read a bit more about some of their characters in the next act.😉

#ShakespeareReadAlong

GingerAntics Oh the sixth sense kid (Hailey Joel Osmond) for Mamilius. Good choice. 5y
GingerAntics How did you do this collage? This makes a lot of sense. 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @GingerAntics Yes, he‘s all grown up now, but the nice thing about fantasy casting is that it doesn‘t matter.😂 5y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa @GingerAntics a free app called Bazaart I picked the background through them and then just layered over the photos I had already picked and saved in my phones screenshots over top. Then added the text. The pushpins I just added where you add text and used the emojis of them 📌 📍 5y
GingerAntics I was thinking that exact same think about HJO!!! lol I'm checking out this app...please hold. 5y
merelybookish This is awesome! You and @GingerAntics have gone above and beyond! It's fun to see your cast all together! 5y
GingerAntics @merelybookish I may have to do two posts. I have almost every role (and every major role) cast. I think I've lost my mind. lol 5y
merelybookish @GingerAntics just leave someone for the last week. lol 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @GingerAntics Book fun is the best fun! 5y
GingerAntics @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I've got Perdita, the Shepherd and shephardesses (including Mopsa and Dorcas), and the jailer left to cast. Interested in any of those folks for next week? lol 5y
GingerAntics @merelybookish don't forget that I also cast Apollo while I was at it. lol 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @GingerAntics I think I‘m going to save Perdita and Florizel for last, the last week. 5y
CoffeeNBooks Wow- look at you go! This is great! 5y
TheBookHippie Wow!!!!!! 5y
GingerAntics How do we cast a baby, though? Unless there is a massive time jump and she gets lines, how do we cast a baby? I was going to leave that one. 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @GingerAntics There is a time jump and she does, which is why I saved it. 😉 5y

The Winter's Tale: I think Matthew McConaughey woyld be perfect in the role of Polixenes. #shakespearereadalong #thewinterstale @merelybookish

Rachbb3 Nice! 5y
JoScho ❤️❤️❤️ 5y
GingerAntics Oh hello!!! 💙💙💙Always a lovely choice. 5y
merelybookish Oh that's a fun pick! I wonder if he's done Shakespeare before? 5y
merelybookish Polixenes seems more laid back than Leontes which fits, I think. 5y

I lied. This is my last one for now. I'm stealing @Riveted_Reader_Melissa 's choice for Camillo and making him Apollo. After being conjured he's going to stalk the stage at will and refill Time's cocktails (someone's got to keep her going!). At some point he will smack Leontes (who is now played by Wallace Shawn) upside the head. #shakespearereadalong #shakespeare #thewinterstale

GingerAntics @merelybookish we didn't have to stick with "official" parts that Shakespeare had, did we? My production has taken on a life of its own. There is no constraining the creative process. 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @GingerAntics I say once you cast the play, the scene direction is up to the Director (which is you!) 5y
GingerAntics @Riveted_Reader_Melissa that was my thought. Now I just have to find a real director willing to see my vision and make it real. It will make millions!!! 5y

GingerAntics @Riveted_Reader_Melissa 👍🏻 I may have to give a little on the casting, which isn't a big deal for some of the roles, but some of them are nonnegotiable. (edited) 5y
batsy Idris Elba for all the roles! 😍 5y
GingerAntics @batsy oh now there is a thought. His Leontes would be perfect seeing that he'd be talking to himself the whole time. Having a hard time picturing him in a dress, but it is tradition. This may have to happen. Thoughts, @Riveted_Reader_Melissa lol 5y
GingerAntics @batsy are you sure we can't have Judi Dench just for the role of time, drinking cocktails and throwing things at Leontes?! 5y
batsy @GingerAntics Oh for sure! Judi Dench for all the roles! 😍 (OK, I see the problem here) 5y
GingerAntics @batsy they can trade off from one night to the next. It will make the weekends easier. Whoever isn't doing all the roles, will sit and drink the cocktails. 👍🏻 Good thinking. They are human. 5y
batsy Bahaha! A most considerate plan; it will work perfectly 👌🏽 5y
GingerAntics @batsy they're going to be tired at the end of the run, but it will be so worth it. 5y
GingerAntics @batsy I think we've got this planned perfectly!!! lol 5y
