East of Eden
East of Eden | John Steinbeck
A masterpiece of Biblical scope, and the magnum opus of one of Americas most enduring authors, in a commemorative hardcover editionIn his journal, Nobel Prize winner John Steinbeck called East of Eden "the first book," and indeed it has the primordial power and simplicity of myth. Set in the rich farmland of California's Salinas Valley, this sprawling and often brutal novel follows the intertwined destinies of two familiesthe Trasks and the Hamiltonswhose generations helplessly reenact the fall of Adam and Eve and the poisonous rivalry of Cain and Abel. The masterpiece of Steinbecks later years, East of Eden is a work in which Steinbeck created his most mesmerizing characters and explored his most enduring themes: the mystery of identity, the inexplicability of love, and the murderous consequences of love's absence. Adapted for the 1955 film directed by Elia Kazan introducing James Dean, and read by thousands as the book that brought Oprahs Book Club back, East of Eden has remained vitally present in American culture for over half a century.

I ended up LOVING this book. Yes, it‘s bleak, but it‘s a lesson in humanity and free will. I‘m still taking notes bc the writing is wonderful and I love the philosophizing that goes on by the narrator. Steinbeck did have a degree in I believe English lit and Philosophy from Stanford and it shows. So happy I read it.

JanuarieTimewalker13 Book 23 finished on 11/5/24 Election Day in the US 2mo
Librarybelle Yay! Congratulations on finishing it! 2mo
Tamra It‘s fabulous! I most loved looking for the Easter eggs, re: connections to & departures from the Genesis story. (Not that I am a biblical scholar - not at all!) 2mo

JanuarieTimewalker13 @Librarybelle thank you so much!! I‘m still taking notes…this book…. 2mo
JanuarieTimewalker13 @Tamra yeah, I have little knowledge in the Bible (especially Old Testament) even though I‘ve done the whole shebang of communion and confirmation in Catholic Church. (edited) 2mo
JanuarieTimewalker13 @Tamra @Librarybelle were you thrown off finding out that Lee stole a book from Samuel….I don‘t know why this is such a head trip for me….was this an example of timshel? 2mo
JanuarieTimewalker13 Samuel and Lee were my favorite characters that‘s why it threw me off when Lee stole his book but maybe Steinbeck considered that a compliment? Now I have to read Meditations….. 2mo
Tamra @JanuarieTimewalker13 that‘s a good guess. I also appreciate the characters are not “perfect”, they have quirks & flaws. 2mo
Tamra @JanuarieTimewalker13 me too - love them! Wise and they learn from mistakes. 2mo
Librarybelle That‘s a good thought, @JanuarieTimewalker13 ! 2mo
JanuarieTimewalker13 @Librarybelle @Tamra I need to speak with John Steinbeck. Lol my gut feeling is that someone had once stolen a book from JS. (edited) 2mo
JanuarieTimewalker13 “Suddenly Lee felt good. He wondered whether Sam‘l Hamilton had ever missed his book or known who stole it. It had seemed to Lee the only clean pure way was to steal it. And he still felt good about it……”but of course he knew who took it who else would have stolen Marcus Aurelius?” (edited) 2mo
MemoirsForMe I‘m a big fan of Steinbeck‘s writing too! You may want to read his Journal about East of Eden. 1mo
JanuarieTimewalker13 @MemoirsForMe ooooooh, thank you for the suggestion!!! 1mo

“But the Hebrew word, the word 'timshel' - 'Thou mayest' - that gives a choice. It might be the most important word in the world. That says the way is open. That throws it right back on a man. For if 'thou mayest' - it is also true that 'Thou mayest not.' Don't you see?“

One of the things I realized as the first autumn closed in was that I'd have a lot of time to read. East of Eden was sort of a local classic in Monterey, CA. It really was breathtaking. Of course, any time the antagonist is female it's going to hit me harder, but this was truly tragic. And yet, it had that undercurrent. That there's a big picture and the heartbreaks are an inevitable part of life. “Timshel.“ There is always evil to be resisted.

JanuarieTimewalker13 One thing I couldn‘t wrap my head around was Lee stealing Samuel‘s book. Was that supposed to play into “thou mayest” also? It‘s mind boggling to me. 2mo
mobill76 @JanuarieTimewalker13 Seemed natural enough to me. I've a copy of Morte d'Arthur liberated from a pub in Leytonstone. But why would Steinbeck add that particular detail? Maybe he just wanted to add those quotes from Meditations in a believable way. In his early days of subterfuge, Lee probably did have to steal books. Or maybe he needed to ground Lee's role in the conversations as that voice of classical wisdom and so he relished his hidden book 2mo
JanuarieTimewalker13 Hmmm, but he knew Samuel after he started working for Adam, so he would‘ve had money. I‘d love to ask John Steinbeck the question!! lol 2mo

Our selection for bookclub tonight is The Great Gatsby, which I‘ve retitled The Great Mediocrity 😜, but another member said he recently read E of E and wanted to chat. I thumbed though the important bits I tabbed and it brought back a flood of resonance. 💙 It‘s a huggable book.

This person is an evangelical Christian and I‘m not biblically literate so I hope he‘s not expecting a deep dive comparison with Genesis. It is not an exact retelling.

BkClubCare Just had a convo yesterday with someone reading this! And was asked if it was a story of Eve. And… I really had to try and recall! I did say it could definitely be a Cain & Able story but I didn‘t remember if the evil mom was “Eve” (I just recall how awful she was! But that doesn‘t jive with my understanding of “Eve” 🤔) 3mo
Tamra @BkClubCare you are correct - she is “Evish” or Eve like in that she is the temptress or a corrupting influence. (edited) 3mo
BkClubCare @Tamra - yeah, but I am not on the team of blaming Eve for everything. #fightthepatriarchy 3mo
Tamra @BkClubCare that was one of the problems my buddy reading companions and I had with it. 😏 3mo

CallMeIshmael So you‘re telling me I need to finally read it? 5mo

This really is a masterpiece. The Biblical echoes, the struggle between good and evil in the human heart, the ambitions and sorrows and ideals and delusions that build a life, all that‘s said and felt and left unspoken in human relationships—Steinbeck manages all of that and more.

It‘s been YEARS since I read this, and I noticed so much more this time around—the flaws as well as the genius. ⤵️

BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) There were several digressions and oddities I didn‘t notice the first time, when I was dazzled by the sheer scale of the book. And yet, in spite of its flaws, this is still a masterpiece. And Cathy is still one of the most chilling characters I‘ve ever read!! Thank you to @TheAromaofBooks for facilitating the chapter-a-day #RandomClassics buddy read! 6mo
Tamra Reading now - it‘s just so engrossing because of the characterization. The biblical tie ins keep me going down rabbit holes because I‘m not biblically literate. 6mo

I cannot say I loved this one, but I liked it. It‘s a struggle of good versus evil and making decisions and their consequences. Parts of this meandered, and I‘m not sure the significance of those parts. Beautifully written.

#RandomClassics

TheAromaofBooks I have very similar feelings about this one! Parts of it I loved, parts of it I didn't like at all, parts of it were just okay, and parts of it I was mostly confused about why they were there 😂 6mo
JanuarieTimewalker13 I‘m reading this now and this post has comforted me. I‘m only about 140 pages in but feel the same…It‘s kind of bleak with few redeeming moments. People seem to love it so I‘m going to soldier on. I guess I thought I‘d enjoy it more bc it‘s a classic. 3mo

Librarybelle Very well said, @JanuarieTimewalker13 . It is bleak. It did help that I read a chapter a day so I could go to a different book after reading a small section. 3mo
JanuarieTimewalker13 Going very slowly through this one, which is not a good sign but I‘m pretty slow in general. I was thinking of this post last night when I read about Olive Hamilton on the plane. That made me laugh out loud and redeemed the book for me a bit!! He‘s got a comedian in him, wish it came out more, but maybe that‘s unfair due to time period and story, I guess. I‘m on p156 of library book hardcover binding. I‘ll finish intro after I finish book 3mo
Librarybelle Good luck, @JanuarieTimewalker13 ! The occasional humor helped break up the bleakness. 3mo

Exploring Loreto Baja and visited this lovely little bookstore, Caballo Blanco. Planning to sit in the nextdoor coffee shop and catch up on tagged book! And noting it‘s time to reread Steinbeck‘s Log of the Sea of Cortez, his funny, descriptive and moving journal of traveling by boat with his good friend Ed Rickets from San Fran, down Baja coast and up the Sea of Cortez in the mid-40s.

DGRachel I‘m impressed you got that far. I hate Steinbeck. Tedious is the perfect descriptor for his writing. 2y

A rare occurrence for me, but I am cutting my loses and bailing on this one. I‘m sure it pays off but I can‘t get through the copious rambling dialogue and the outright offensive descriptions of things. It has taken me 2 weeks to not get 200 pages in and I CANNOT fathom reading 400 more. I wanted to finish it because it‘s a classic, but who cares? Maybe I‘ll revisit when there aren‘t so many glorious tomes watching me suffer from the TBR shelf 🪦

CarolynM I made it through, but only because I was buddy reading. Too much telling and not enough showing. And the characters never had conversations, they made speeches. 3y
5feet.of.fury @CarolynM agree. Prattling on endlessly 😂And what there is of conversation was already explained to the reader and didn‘t forward the plot in any capacity. 3y

Such an expansive, complex and American book, I didn‘t love it but I appreciated it and the place it holds in our history and literary culture. The characters are iconic, the writing exceptional and now I want to watch the classic movie with James Dean. #BookspinBingo #Bookspin @TheAromaofBooks #20in4 @Andrew65 #MountTBR
