After an archaeological dig on Sandy Wilson's grandmother's land unearths a skull and other bone fragments, the old lady is found dead. A tragic accident when a neighbour was out hunting rabbits or something more sinister?

A good mystery and it was interesting to see a bit of Sandy's backstory and for him to get some character development, but I could have done with a family tree.

Parent conferences today. I have time off in between so I am visiting the Shetland Islands.

Chrissyreadit I just love Shetland the tv series so much. I‘m dying for the next episode. I‘m sure I should read the books. What grade do you teach? 3y
Chrissyreadit Also, do you like chocolate? 3y
kspenmoll @Chrissyreadit I just started this series. I am just fascinated by the Shetland Islands themselves- learning so much about them! I am a special education teacher, 9-12, in an inclusive school. I also co-teach 9 grade English, which I love. Yes I afore chocolate! 3y

Chrissyreadit Ohhh!!! That‘s intense! I taught Special Ed between early intervention and counseling. Any favorite chocolates? 3y
BiblioLitten I love the Shetland series too. I haven‘t read the books but when I finish the series, I will read the book. 🙂 @Chrissyreadit 3y
Chrissyreadit @kspenmoll what state do you teach in? I hope you get a lot of support! ❤️ 3y
Chrissyreadit @BiblioLitten I just added the first one to my TBR because I‘m not sure when the next Shetland series will come out- but I wonder if audio would be better? I agree with @kspenmoll the islands are fascinating- I would love to visit them someday. 3y

It‘s a #beginswith two-fer!

I completely forgot to post the pictured book yesterday. It‘s on my #roll100 list for the year but wasn‘t picked this month. #secret

In the tagged book, we learn that excavated bones turn #red and that Sandy‘s family is a little dysfunctional!

It's funny to me that this is only the third book in the series because I feel like I have been reading them forever (although not in a bad way lol). Here we leave the main island for an even smaller community. I really liked getting to know Perez's coworker even better. Cleeves uses third person to allow the reader to see what is happening from multiple perspectives, which I like. I only had three pages left when they finished my oil change ⬇️

Not the book I was intending to read but the heart wants what it wants and yesterday mine wanted me to wander into a book store and leave with this one. I feel no remorse even though I have bought way too many books lately. I have missed the Shetland islands and Inspector Perez. I find this series relaxing even though I kept guessing who the killer was and was still wrong in the end. #booked2021 #colorintitle

Chrissyreadit @Jas16 to be honest, I‘m usually really good with understanding people with accents, but I‘m struggling with some of the faster speakers and missing info. I‘m hoping the more I get used to hearing it the more I can follow. 4y

I was already familiar with this particular story as it was the basis for the first episode of Shetland (which is the only episode I‘ve seen 😬.) Still, Cleeves‘ writing is so richly detailed I never felt as if I was “wasting time.” She just transports me each and every time. #SeriesRead2021

This is the best Shetland mystery I‘ve read so far. I‘m kicking myself that I didn‘t figure out who the murderer was until the end. Looking back, it was obvious 🤦‍♀️ Such great characters. I can‘t wait to get hold of the next one.

Day 2 of #20series20days takes us to the windswept and spooky Shetland islands. I put this book on hold with cloudLibrary which said the wait would be 19 days. Instead I got it the same week! Since my next trip to UK is postponed until who knows when, I‘ll just have to travel there through books.

Now that I‘ve read this installment in the series, I do have a few quibbles (see comments), but I liked the Sandy background.

#Top20series

Susanita Quibbles. 1. It started off with one of my pet peeves that turns up too often in mysteries and thrillers: the cliche “she heard someone screaming and realized it was herself” and in this case I‘m not sure how much the opening vignette added to the story. 4y
Susanita 2. It needed better copy editing. She mentions the trows numerous times, sometimes explaining them, sometimes re-explaining, and sometimes not. Meanwhile WTF is a pelagic trawler? Also it was hard to keep the Wilson family tree straight sometimes. 4y
Susanita 3. The audiobook had technical problems. The reader was fine, but several chapters were cut abruptly. I had to find an ebook version on a different platform to follow along and make sure I didn‘t miss anything. A couple chapters actually dropped several sentences! 4y
See All 6 Comments
Susanita That said, I did enjoy the book, perhaps just not quite as much as the first two, and I‘m looking forward to the next one even though I know (vaguely) what‘s coming. Also...some interesting changes were made to the TV adaptation! 4y
TrishB Love this series. 4y
Andrew65 I love this series and it was my Day 1 choice. However I agree about ‘she heard someone screaming and realized it was herself‘. Also hate it when they mess up the audiobooks. The next book is crucial in the series. (edited) 4y

There are a lot of characters and I had a hard time keeping some of them straight, especially as to how they related to each other. I did think the book picked up in the second half when the second body was found. Or, really, when it appeared the person was missing. For the first half of the book, I thought it was time to give up on the series, but with the second half, I think I‘ll do one more. Just not on audio.

This was my favorite of the series so far. I liked getting more of Sandy‘s backstory and watching his character evolve into a competent and more confident detective. An archaeological dig leads to some surprising discoveries and more than one death! @Cathythoughts quickly working my way through these - nice that so many are on hoopla.

This is book three of The Shetland series, I missed book two, I quite often read series out of order. A solid mystery with lots of red herrings, I guessed wrong. Shetland is as much a character as the humans who live there, a look into island life a cross the pond.

This is a well written murder mystery. Nice local flavor. I liked the plot, it was not predictable. Gore and violence were kept to a minimum.
However, I wasn't sure why anyone would want to live there in Shetland. I also got tired of hearing about family dynamics, which are a constant part of the narrative.

Bk3 in the Shetland series is another winner for me. For those of you who've seen the TV series, this book is what S1 was based on. Mima Wilson is an old woman, living in her croft in Whalsey, a small isle off Shetland Main. When an archeological dig on her land turns up bones, she's found a week later shot, on the ground next to the dig.At first ruled an accident, suspicions are raised when another person, one of the diggers, is found dead.4⭐️

Following up with Bk3 from the Shetland series by Ann Cleeves. When an archeological dig turns up human bones everyone assumes they're very old. But then Mima Wilson is found, shot dead outside her croft where the dig is. Everyone assumes it was an accidental shooting by a rabbit poacher, but DI Jimmy Perez isn't so sure. Trying to untangle the family history & grudges is more time consuming than he bargained for, then another body turns up.

Bibliogeekery Ooo, I watched and loved this show but somehow didn't realize there were books!! Thx!! 8y
