"Everfair "is a wonderful Neo-Victorian alternate history novel that explores the question of what might have come of Belgium's disastrous colonization of the Congo if the native populations had learned about steam technology a bit earlier. Fabian Socialists from Great Britian join forces with African-American missionaries to purchase land from the Belgian Congo's "owner," King Leopold II. This land, named Everfair, is set aside as a safe haven, an imaginary Utopia for native populations of the Congo as well as escaped slaves returning from America and other places where African natives were being mistreated.Nisi Shawl's speculative masterpiece manages to turn one of the worst human rights disasters on record into a marvelous and exciting exploration of the possibilities inherent in a turn of history. "Everfair "is told from a multiplicity of voices: Africans, Europeans, East Asians, and African Americans in complex relationships with one another, in a compelling range of voices that have historically been silenced. "Everfair "is not only a beautiful book but an educational and inspiring one that will give the reader new insight into an often ignored period of history.

Book #26 of the year: “Everfair” by Nisi Shawl

I didn‘t like it 😕 I really wanted to, but it was hard to get into the story, the timeline was weird, and there wasn‘t much character development. I‘d say skip this one.

My last #vacationread as I‘m headed home today.

If America offered reparations in the form of 40 acres and a mule, but they are on the sea floor and you have to get body modifications in order to become a merman or mermaid… strange and haunting, as racism can‘t even be escaped when leaving life on land.

This is from the Black Stars stories, published by Amazon, the third of 6.

(Not the tagged book) I didn‘t quite *get* this one - maybe if it had been a bit longer? Cool concept with humans being augmented into being merpeople - but there was so much other stuff (important stuff, big, hard topic stuff) that I got a bit lost.

I'm so, so, so disappointed! I was looking forward to this book so much. I knew there are so many things involved in this story (alternative history, First World War, Steampunk), I just had to read it. But sadly it turned out to be a total downer. The realisation of Shawls slpendid ideas were just way to bad. I don't mind time changes and different time lines, but here the jumping just happens way to fast. ⬇

Jari-chan I didn't get a chance to getting into the story or getting to know the characters. Before that happens, we jump again. Several years, other characters. And before you're settled, you jump again. That was just so, so frustrating!
This disappointment will stick with me for a long, long time...

Hmm I‘m only 10% in @MeganAnn and @ErinSBecker and so far I don‘t care much for any of the characters yet. Did you guys finish? Does it get better after the choppy start?

MeganAnn I found that after the first 50 pages or so I started caring more about the characters and the formation of Everfair. It took a bit and the various perspectives might not be for everyone. I found it easier to read only a chapter or two at a time because I could think on those perspectives before moving on. I actually finished it earlier this week but have been so busy with work I didn‘t get a chance to post. In the end, I throughly enjoyed it! 3y
Smrloomis @MeganAnn I‘m going to give it a little longer. Hopefully it will start to come together. I have a feeling that this start is unnecessarily complicated but maybe I‘m wrong... and then maybe I will read about Leopold himself 😳 3y
MeganAnn @Smrloomis I hope it comes together for you as well. But if not, then no worries 😊 I did think that the complicated start made it harder to get into, but set the stage for the second half of the book. 3y
ErinSBecker I unfortunately couldn't get into it. I gave up last week. 😶 3y
Smrloomis @ErinSBecker it happens 🤷🏻‍♀️ I‘m going to give it a little longer but if it doesn‘t work, I may have to give up too. 3y

On to Part 2! So far, I am loving this book!

Part 1 is made up of chapters told from the perspective of the various characters important to the formation of Everfair. I know some reviewers haven‘t liked having so many different POV, but personally I think it‘s very well done here. We get to know these people a little at a time while seeing how their actions, thoughts and dreams play into the larger picture. We see how Everfair came to be... ⤵️

MeganAnn We get glimpses of the politics that go into creating Everfair, the violence that causes those political people to create Everfair as well as the violence that allows it to grow and expand while freeing many of the people that come to be its inhabitants. We see technology being created in the steambikes and air canoes. And through all of that, we also get glimpses of relationships being formed and broken, love, friendship, alliances, religion... 3y
MeganAnn It‘s a lot going on, yes. But in the best way! I can‘t wait to see where this all goes in Part 2! 😍 3y
Smrloomis So so glad you‘re enjoying it ❤️❤️❤️👏🏽 3y
ErinSBecker I just really got into this book today. I was having difficulty with the multiple pov, but started reading it out loud to myself to force myself to slow down and started really enjoying it! I'm about 50 pages in now, really interested in seeing what happens with this polyamorous family! 3y
MeganAnn @ErinSBecker I‘m glad you‘re starting to enjoy it! I did find I had to slow down as well.. reading a chapter or two at a time and then stepping away to digest that before moving on has helped me keep everyone straight. I love the polyamorous family as well. I do wish we got more details about their dynamics, but as we move further into the book that might not be as relevant anyway. Daisy and Lisette are two of my favorite characters. 3y

Cozying up this afternoon to start this book for a buddy read with @Smrloomis and @ErinSBecker 🤓

This one has been on my shelf waiting to be read for two years! 😬 I originally bought it based off the staff recommendation posted on the shelf at a bookstore in Minneapolis, MN. I remember the note made it seem fascinating and a bit different then the fantasy novels I typically read. It‘s about time I actually read it! 📚✨

ErinSBecker @MeganAnn @Smrloomis I'm only a few pages I'm but I'm enjoying it so far and have a week of vacation coming up. Hoping to really dig in then!! 3y

ErinSBecker @Smrloomis I don't have a copy yet but Id be happy to get one! I don't really know what a buddy read is, even though I've done one. 😂 I think it's just a couple people reading a book and talking about it. My other buddy read is pretty informal. April #BookSpin done! @TheAromaofBooks

I enjoyed this book overall, though I get the mixed reviews. It took me a while to sink into. It has the pacing (setting and time jumps between scenes) and number of characters of an epic novel, but what would usually be 600+ pages is done in under 400, giving me a feeling of linked vignettes. It doesn't let you get comfortable, which maybe makes sense for an alt history of the Congo (from Leopold-WWI). ⬇️

llwheeler It's a time period/area I'm unfortunately not that familiar with, so I'm sure I missed some things (plus current rather distracted reading brain). But I like literary/ideas-based spec fic, so I found it very interesting. I'll probably be thinking about this one for a while. 4y

I have to say, this one was not as good as I had anticipated. I know it's an alternate history, but the jumps through time are just too fast for such short chapters. The characters never got to fully develop in a way I could care about them. I am disappointed this wasn't as good as it looked.

This was one of those books that I admired more than I enjoyed. I think it was also a weird read for me because I think it's talking back to mainstream steampunk, but this is the only steampunk I've ever read. It's an ambitious alt history novel that reworks the atrocities of Belgium's colonization of the Congo. Fascinating concepts but the wide scope left me not feeling connected with the characters and not feeling invested in their stories.

This is one of the few recent SFF award nominees my library has an online audiobook for - but it's one of my least favorite SFF genres so I'm about to go in with negative expectations. Horrible way to approach a book. Can anyone say nice things about it without spoiling anything?

Jabberwocky I personally ended up bailing 😅 But the writing is gorgeous and the premise is just too cool 6y
Settings Oh no, that's my problem with steampunk. A setting the author thinks is "cool" so it gets a lot of attention even though it's actually cliche and stale, plus oftentimes unlikable pirate/outlaw characters we're expect to find charming even as they abuse the backround characters. 6y
