This book is good for introducing older students to a story that draws on a different culture, in this case, Chinese folklore. The book also includes valuable morals.
pickIn this speculative fiction novel, Grace Linn draws upon Chinese folklore to create a new story. The main character Minli seeks the old man of the moon to change her families fortune. Minli meets new friends and embarks on her journey, on the way discovering the true meaning of wealth.

This story seems to have good lessons about what wealth can be seen as (monetary or family/connections). The characters seem to all be individuals with some sort of oddity and the book shows how they all contribute to the adventure with the help of each other, which is a good lesson on team work. The story is also not a simple western adventure, it has deep roots in Chinese folklore, so it could connect well to “windows, mirrors, glass and doors.“
pickI only read the first 10 pages of the book, but from a simple look at it it has a really nice font and includes imagery along with the story. The main character, Minli, wishes to find the old man of the moon to ask him to change her family's fortune. She meets a flightless dragon and other interesting characters that all play a role in helping her complete her goal. The story has lessons through out the book, including about what true wealth is.

This book would be great for an upper elementary, middle school student to read. It opens the door of different races and ethnicities of people and how their living situation may be different than typical Americans. Readers can compare and contrast living styles between themselves and the characters and see which ones stand out to them. This story shouldn't be too scary to readers.
pickThis is a great speculative fiction book. In the story the main character Minli, her father tells her these elaborate stories of dragons and fairies. These stories are told to her by her father allowed her to escape the hardships of her working life and let her imagination be free. This let them as a family to come together and let their imaginations run wild.
pickSimply delightful! A children‘s tale full of delightful characters and an adventurous quest. The author skillfully interweaves stories within stories which all come together to shape the narrative. The simplicity of the children in this story is what makes it powerful.
pickThis was a charming read. Although it's a juvenile book, anyone who reads it will come away entertained. This is a Newberry Honor books. This MG read was fun and full of adventure. I liked how the author broke up the main story with characters telling tales of Chinese folklore to give detail to the story.
I also loved the illustrations.

pickWhat a great story! I don‘t know why I waited so long to read it. Now I want to read more of Lin‘s books; her writing style is so clear and lyrical. I felt like I was falling right into a folktale (my favorite!). Minli‘s adventures were thrilling without being scary, and the multiple stories-within-the-story were lovely. This is my #63 for #Roll100 because I already read #62.

pickThis is a great trilogy, especially as a read aloud option for a child. I enjoyed Where the Mountain Meets the Moon the best but all three are well worth the read.

pickDelightful book about a young girl seeking fortune where story and reality intersect. My son (age 10.5) has read this one several times and has been wanting me to read it for a while. He's been reading primarily nonfiction about war lately, and it's nice to see that tales like this still draw him in.

pickThis one has it all! Chinese folklore, fantasy, female lead character, adventure, perfect for upcoming 4th-6th grade. The downside; I learned while reading it that one of the local elementary schools read it as a class. So, I‘ll put this to the side and continue my hunt for my summer book club books. I‘m glad I read this one though!

Such beautiful illustrations in a beautifully written kids book. I love how the author wove Chinese folklore into her story.
Current bedtime reading for the 10 and 7 year old. We loved When the Sea Turns to Silver and this one is proving to be just as charming.
I think the kids may ask for a goldfish by the end of the book.

Rightly deserves the Newbery Honor‘s nod. Total Pick!
I am liking this book, each chapter starts with a little illustration on the top, and intersperses with beautiful full page illustration. ❤️

I've already checked out another book by the author. I love fairy tales and I want to branch out of my comfort zone this year. I want to learn more Chinese stories since I have family who live there.
pickA lovely change of pace from my typical european fairy tales and a beautiful introduction to Chinese fables. Minli‘s quest and various meet-ups along the way frame a collection of fables covering creation myths to morality tales with magic and dragons and goldfish (oh, my!).
Also contains gorgeous illustrations. No surprise this won the Newbery Honor award! It‘s that rare book that makes me want to immediately turn back to page one for a reread...

I‘m reading them all out of order, but so far this is my favorite of the three books in this series by Grace Lin. They‘re intertwined, with overlapping stories and recurring motifs, but you can really read them in any order. The main narrative of Minli and Dragon moves fairly slowly, but that‘s almost beside the point— like the characters, you‘re there for the stories told and retold amidst the action. This would be a great read aloud. ⛰🌙🐉👧🏻

pickMinle is the only child of a very poor couple. They work hard everyday, but never seem to do better. Only fun is when Ba (dad) tells stories, and Ma doesn't enjoy them because she thinks they are a waste of time. Minle is determined to help her parents and runs away to bring back luck and fortune. She has many adventures while Ma and Ba worry. All three find out what the important things in life are. Will be reading this to my class this year!

The different characters on each step of Minli's journey were lovely as were the tie-ins to Chinese folklore. Today was a pretty darn good day for this book loving teacher: we had an author visit from Grace Lin! She gave an amazing and engaging presentation, and our 4th graders were enthralled (they have been reading Where the Mountain Meets the Moon, which is fantastic if you haven't read it yet). Bonus: she signed copies of her books for us! I got one of each, of course! And I think many Littens will understand this feeling...⬇️
