Infinity Son
Infinity Son: A Specters Novel | Adam Silvera
Balancing epic and intensely personal stakes, bestselling author Adam Silvera's Infinity Son is a gritty, fast-paced adventure about two brothers caught up in a magical war generations in the making. Growing up in New York, brothers Emil and Brighton always idolized the Spell Walkers--a vigilante group sworn to rid the world of specters. While the Spell Walkers and other celestials are born with powers, specters take them, violently stealing the essence of endangered magical creatures. Brighton wishes he had a power so he could join the fray. Emil just wants the fighting to stop. The cycle of violence has taken a toll, making it harder for anyone with a power to live peacefully and openly. In this climate of fear, a gang of specters has been growing bolder by the day. Then, in a brawl after a protest, Emil manifests a power of his own--one that puts him right at the heart of the conflict and sets him up to be the heroic Spell Walker Brighton always wanted to be. Brotherhood, love, and loyalty will be put to the test, and no one will escape the fight unscathed.

Perfect for fans of TJ Klune's, The Extraordinaries, and X-Men (with more LBGTQ+ rep), Infinity Son is an urban fantasy with lots of moral peril and magical creatures! It's a little predictable, and unfortunately reads more like a Wattpad story, though my biggest complaint is that the pacing issues had a tendency to pull you out of the action as everything was happening too damn quickly. I just wanted to scream, WAIT, WHAT? so many times. (1/3)

TheIntrovertedDodoBird Honestly, you let your thoughts wonder for even a second, and someone has been kidnapped, or a major plot twist has come and gone in a sentence. Also, I can't help but feel that the story lacks the heart I usually associate with Adam Silvera's writing. And confession, a few of the characters made me want to throttle them (is that terrible of me?). (2/3) 8mo
TheIntrovertedDodoBird I'm not majorly invested, but since I already own the next instalment, I'll probably finish the series. Underwhelmed, but I think the world-building is super neat, so kudos on that, Silvera! I shudder to think how there was anything to edit at all - it ended precariously (cliffhanger not well executed), and again, those pacing issues were frustrating. (3/3) 8mo

I don‘t always enjoy superhero books, but this was a fun take on superhero tropes. I loved the way that natural powers, powers stolen from animals, and phoenixes all combined in this book. The characters were fun, and the pacing was good. Even the dramatic bits were well executed. I felt a little out of touch with the whole war dynamic for some reason. If you hate cliffhangers, not a good book for you. #LGBTQ #Phoenix #Roll100 #SuperHero

I‘m reading three series for a panel I‘ve been tasked to moderate. This is the first book I finished. I‘m intrigued by the play around humanity/heroism & a fantasy world built in such a recognizable real one. I also read a ton of critique about this book that surprised me! If you could ask Adam Silvera about this series, what would you ask?

Just finished book 1 of my #24in48 #readathon
Rating: ⭐️⭐️

Most of the book I was confused. I was confused on who was who because both boys sounded really similar to one another. There wasn‘t much character development. Then, the world building was very confusing. I didn‘t understand everything in the world. The ending seemed abrupt in my opinion. I did love the magic in the book. The cover is amazing as well.

CaitlinSiem You know, I had this audiobook checked out from the library but I kept listening to other books I had instead and with two days left in the loan I decided not to bother and just returned it. Now I‘m glad I did. 5y

If the X-Men went toe-to-toe with mutants who acquired their powers unnaturally and lived in a world of magical creatures, you would have Infinity Son. I loved that despite the magical / supernatural elements, the setting is an alternate version of our reality. Great cast of characters. Definitely excited to see where this series goes.

2/5🔥fire darts

This YA fantasy about brothers who struggle with their roles in a war they didn‘t want to be in fell short, mostly due to poor world building. It felt like Silvera was trying to set the scene in this novel to get into the details in the inevitable sequel, but I probably read it, despite the great diversity of characters and messages on male body image.

After 6 months of barely being able to read, I‘ve decided to get back into it by journaling what I read. Always makes me feel better

jlabombard10315 Intrigued by this idea! I LOVE to read, but have zero idea how to journal what I'm reading. 5y
CollapsingLibrary @jlabombard10315 I make it up as I go! Haha but currently I read the chapter and then write down the points of what happened for the chapter and some of my thoughts. I originally started a while back because I was reading so many library books and couldn‘t flip back through them! 5y
jlabombard10315 I may have to pick up a journal and some new pens for this today. It would add a nice level to my current yearly book tracking that I've been doing. 🤔 5y

This saved itself a little bit in the last 60 pages, but getting there was an uphill battle. Other reviewers have put it into words better than I can, but to me it was just such a mess. Also, too many characters that were all basically the same person, except one who was /literal/ trash. Will I read the next one in the series despite my great dislike? Yes. I have faith in Silvera making something great from this mess. (please don't let me down)

On one hand this is frustratingly badly written and I want to smack just about 90% of the characters (the rest are too docile and lifeless to warrant even that) and on the other hand I want to keep reading in hopes that there will eventually be some world building and some reasonable behaviour. Idk what's even happening. What is a celestial? Blood caster? Specter? We just don't know 🤷‍♀️

I feel terrible but I thought this book was just okay. It had a lot potential and ideas that normally I would love in a fantasy book. It just fell a little short for me.

If I lived in a cave the last year, this book would have still been a cover buy for me; it is gorgeous. This book will do well for those who are crazy for Melissa Meyer‘s Renegades series. Superheroes, villains and the morally grey, those with powers, powerful and powerless drive the story, along with the legendary mythical creatures. All of this and it ends as expected, with a cliff hanger

First read of 2020, and we are starting the year off with a bang! I love everything Adam Silvera writes, but his first foray into fantasy is definitely his best yet. Even if it utterly WRECKED ME, but what else did I really expect from Adam Silvera??? 🔥🔥🔥

Wow this book was so good. I loved the characters, they felt so real and so genuine. I liked that the story was set in our world but with magic, hydras, phoenixes and basilisks. Honestly any story that has phoenixes in it, I'm so down for! This is my first Silvera book and if he writes with such feeling in all his books, I need to read the others asap!

I was lucky to get an ARC for this book. I cannot believe how much I love it and I keep thinking, I want book number 2 now, and I still have to wait for book number 1 to be officially published. If you love modern YA fantasy you must add this to your stack! IT IS AMAZING!!! Adam Silver at his finest!
