Read this for May's #YABuddyRead although I missed the discussion thanks to being at work! I really loved this book - it was poetic and beautiful and frustrating in so many ways. It wouldn't be what I normally pick up, but I'm glad I read it.

Rachel moves back to her hometown after the death of her younger brother Cal. She begins to work at a bookstore alongside her former best friend/childhood crush, Henry, whose girlfriend recently broke up with. While they help each other grieve, they‘re feelings for each other also grows.
This is a reread for me. I just love this book. It‘s one of my favorites.

Deblovestoread I really loved this book and think I would have back in my teenage years, too. I would love to hear what current teens think especially since letter writing is now an antiquated way to communicate. @TheBookHippie @JaclynW 3y

BarbaraJean I really liked it as an adult... I think I would have LOVED it as a teen. (And as a teen, I probably would have been less frustrated with Henry and the whole Amy thing!) 3y

JaclynW Endings are often bittersweet. It is hard to say goodbye, but something equally as amazing or important is coming. New doors are being opened. An ending is just a new beginning, right?? The brother dying was an ending. The store closing was an ending. Relationships ending. So many examples in this book of endings, but I think all led to a new beginning. New possibilities. It is how you frame it in your mind, right?? 3y

megnews @JaclynW I agree every ending is a beginning. Sometimes at the end it‘s hard to see the next step but something is there. 3y

Deblovestoread I agree. I‘ve come to realize that some relationship are meant to be short lived. Sometimes you are the person needed for a certain situation or they are what you need. Recognizing those endings can be hard as can finding where the next beginning starts. 3y

Once a bit of time has passed and I have adjusted, I can reflect back at how it was a good thing. In the moment is often hard for me. I need a little space to ponder and realign myself. My daughter is graduating from high school tomorrow, she is struggling. She struggles every year on her birthday because it means one year --> 3y

JaclynW closer to having to "adult." Funny thing though, she is ready. She does amazingly well at life. I guess even the best of us have doubts and questions. Insecurities. We have been talking about this exact question you brought up. This book is SO GOOD for these things!!!

JaclynW Another thought!! Does an ending really mean an end? Or is it just a slight shift? A change in course? A new path to explore? A change in the relationship? etc... 3y

JaclynW It is bigger than she had originally thought. It needed to be shared and make a wider ripple. Maybe she also wanted it as a reminder to us all to get out there in the world and share yourself. 3y

megnews I think she originally saw it as an endless pointless task that didn‘t serve a purpose but after seeing the notes her brother was leaving Henry‘s sister, I think she recognized she was saving important parts of people‘s lives who had left pieces of themselves there. 3y

JaclynW I would probably want to spend it with those closest to me. It would have to be in a place I like to travel to (maybe even doing one last excursion) or maybe I would be fine in my own backyard. I'm pretty sure an amazing meal of some sort would be involved. Great conversation and laughter would be a must. Affection and appreciation of sorts would need to be expressed too. 3y

JaclynW Your questions are stumping me! This is a good one! I think we can save the things we love in whatever form we can by remembering them, honoring them, paying tribute, seeing the postives despite any negatives that are attached, seeing things for what they really are and learning from them and improving situations as best we can. This is something I have tried to do with personal relationships that haven't ended so great. There is still good there. 3y

megnews I have an unopened pack of cigarettes that was my grandfather‘s last pack before he quit cold turkey. He was also an alcoholic who quit. So for me it symbolizes strength and I hope one of my kids will keep it when I‘m gone to remember his strength as well. 3y

Chrissyreadit I kept journals until I had kids. Then there are photos. I think about Sappho‘s lost poetry, and Pompeii and the destruction of war, and how much we have lost. Somehow I always go existential. 3y

mrp27 This quote is so me. I am often labeled the family historian because I journal and I scrapbook. Our stories are important so I do all I can to physically record them. In addition to that, we talk a lot about my grandparents and my dad, all of who have passed, to keep their stories/memories alive. @megnews love that! 3y

megnews @Chrissyreadit I do too! That‘s why sometimes these questions are more about what we‘ve learned about ourselves and life than about the book itself because I always am finding ways books mirror my life. This book was a great look at grief. 3y

BarbaraJean I'm low-key obsessed with hanging on to beloved memories, often through objects that evoke those memories (books, pictures, ticket stubs, meaningful souvenirs, etc.). This is probably one of the reasons I was a big journaler for many years, and one of the reasons I spend time now in reflective writing. Also one of the reasons I love that dumb FB “On This Day“ feature!! 3y

Roary47 I take a lot of photos and journal. I have Momento‘s from my grandma and dad I have on display in my bookshelves and kitchen or laundry-room windows. 3y

megnews @BarbaraJean I love that fb feature too. It‘s one of the few things fb is good for. I‘ve always wanted to journal but could never stick with it. I‘m also that way about objects. There were some silly things of my grandparents I could t get rid of because of the memories. I keep ticket stubs and write on them how many stars and who I went with. I love those. 3y

megnews I take lots of photos too. Best travel photo tip I ever read was to take pics with fellow travelers in them. You can look at pictures of the monuments online or in a book but with the people you love in them makes it more memorable. I find that to be the case. 3y

BarbaraJean @megnews My mom always said that same thing about vacation photos—she always wanted us in them instead of just the scenery. I remember how annoyed my brother would get about having to stand in front of ANOTHER landmark to have our picture taken. But we are all grateful for those photos now (even the ones where my brother looks annoyed!) 3y

Chrissyreadit I have lived a thousand lives, and thousands of years because of books. Perhaps one book that defines me is a dpecific edition of Webster‘s unabridged dictionary, with maps, measures, foreign phrases, and so many words. 3y

TheBookHippie I think as a child as soon as I read a book that had similarities to my life it helped immensely so that I didn‘t feel alone. Those meant the world to me. As an adult sometimes you read an experience or belief close to yours and it can be so affirming. Books also help you empathise sympathise and “see” other parts of life and the world and can educate you as well. I think it‘s so important to read. 3y

megnews @TheBookHippie I agree. I learned things about life from books that I would have never learned in school or from my parents. Today when I am sad or anxious I can escape to another time and place for a bit and feel better. 3y

mrp27 I always think of that line in You‘ve Got Mail when Meg Ryan says that the books we read as kids shape and define us. I find that to be true in all my reading over the years. 3y

And I agree, for me it's not just the books I read as a kid, but I continue to find books that shape and define me during each era of my life. When sharing a “spiritual autobiography“ timeline with a group a couple years ago, I picked a book that had been influential or was representative of each stage of the timeline. Reading is so deeply woven into my personal and spiritual growth! 3y

megnews @BarbaraJean when #overbookedclub read a memoir about the author‘s childhood reading awhile back, we did that too. I often go back and look at mine. It‘s that meaningful. I can recall specific moments about each book, from someone reading it to me to me picking it over & over at the library. I love those reading memories. 3y

JaclynW I think secondhand books hold stories of the people who have held/read them before you. You can't help but wonder who read this book before you, what were they like, what made them pick up this book, what was their life like - all the more so if they wrote in the book. I SO LOVED this aspect of the book. It made me want to write in ALL of my books (which is something I RARELY do). It was almost like a record of a written history. Loved it!! 3y

megnews @JaclynW @TheBookHippie I have always felt this way about places and homes. I didn‘t think about books like that concretely until I read this. But it is true. I agree even library books where a bookmark is left behind or a receipt that shows when the book was taken out and what other books the person got. I wonder how they felt reading it. What we have in common. That‘s also a reason I love #LMPBC. I often hope the books I leave behind will ⬇️ 3y

Deblovestoread I once borrowed a book from the library that had another patron‘s check out slip in it who happened to be someone I deal with in my work life by phone. She never presented herself as very friendly but knowing we read the same kind of books changed how I thought about her a bit. 3y

mrp27 @JaclynW Exactly! I love used books and I live the hidden treasures they sometimes hold. I admit that I sometimes even leave things in my personal books that I‘ve read to find as a treasure at a later date like a receipt or bookmark or scrap of aper with a note. 3y

BarbaraJean I think of my own books as being haunted by my former selves--I have a lot of memories tied up in which books I was reading at certain points in my life. I like the idea of thinking about secondhand books in the same way! I often ponder those tangible reminders left behind (inscriptions, marginalia, scraps of paper or library receipts). I LOVE wondering about inscriptions and why the person would have given that book away. 3y

Roary47 I agree with you @megnews I love seeing previous “bookmarks” in library books and imagining where the book has been. There is adventures these books have been on that we will never know, but it‘s fun to think about. 3y

JaclynW I loved this quote too!! Words are everything. (Well I guess paired with action as well!!) But what you say matters. How you say it. They stick in our minds, make us feel certain things, drive us to action. Even a simple "I love you." This book was full of examples of how words matter and how they have shaped lives and impacted others. I do like to say "use your words wisely" they tell the world who you are and what you stand for. 3y

TheBookHippie Words always matter. Impact always should be thought of before speaking, intent means nothing, there in lies 99 percent of the problem with words. What is/are the impact of your words is something entitled people never think of. That‘s where the damage lies. Very few words can make or break people and situations and relationships. Love this quote. 3y

megnews When I read this quote, I think about how much words matter in raising children. How much they matter in a marriage. What a difference hearing I love you makes. I also think about recent mental health initiatives to get people who are feeling suicidal to speak up or to get people concerned about someone to get past the taboo and ask. Having struggled with depression the majority of my life, I now use my words to honestly share how I‘m feeling ⬇️ 3y

Deblovestoread Words can slice you up and spit you out. Words can heal a thousand wounds. Unfortunately the hateful words hurt immediately and deeply and the healing words sometimes have to be said over and over until they are believed. What we say and how we say it matters. 3y

mrp27 Agree that words 100% matter. They wound, they heal. But sometimes I must say we all need to drop the words and listen more. 3y

I started reading this #YABuddyRead a little early because I was in the mood for something sweet and bookish. This absolutely fit the bill. It‘s a sweet love story with a bookstore at its heart, but it‘s also threaded through with a beautiful second plot on coming to terms with grief. It‘s definitely predictable, and I found myself frustrated with some of the characters‘ actions, but probably mostly because I‘m too far past being a young adult. 😉

mrp27 I'm not big on poetry, I think I try to hard with it. But I have been trying to read more lately and I just discovered Danez Smith, their poetry is raw, gritty and honest. 3y

This book was a sucker punch to the 💔. I had borrowed this a couple years ago but didn‘t get to it & this was definitely when I was meant to read it. I‘m super picky about giving 5 stars. Either the writing has to be gorgeous, the story amazing, or the feelings evoked. The writing & even the story may not have met those requirements but it gave me all the feels. Chrissyreadit I agree- something about this book really impacted me. I think the characters were well written- and the skill is in the subtleties of conveying the story and emotions. I genuinely loved every character and all the faults. 3y

I like the idea of putting letters in favorite books at a used book store. The problem as it is shown in this book is the person not getting the letter at a pivotal time. I enjoyed this story, but maybe a little too predictable. Also how do you keep a secret that big? Not sure. Read for #YABuddyRead

I don‘t quite know how to describe this book. It‘s about books. It‘s about used bookstores. It‘s about love and loss. There is a used bookstore that has a “letter library“ where people can leave each other letters between the pages of certain books — a bookstore that I wish, with all my heart, really existed. It‘s not a sad story but it‘s not a happy story either which is why I‘m having a hard time describing it. You will just have to read it.

I didn't hate the story so much as I hated the way it ended, like A LOT. But it may be fun to read in a group setting where you're having discussions (rants haha) about it as you go! ⭐️⭐️⭐️ The was a fun, bookish teen romance. It starts with Rachel‘s brother dying, and I liked that this wasn‘t just a catalyst for the story but something that was dealt with throughout. It‘s a good premise & the teens are pretty believable as 19 year olds, but it wasn‘t the best I‘ve read in the genre. I would recommend it to people who, like me, enjoy reading books about books.

This book stole my heart and ran away with it. It reminded me so much of me and my husband, and how I was his friend in middle school and he would always ask me how to get the girls. I loved him for years and finally professed that to him in tenth grade. Turns out, he loved me too. Twelve years later, he still makes me swoon. Incredible book and a must read.

My #top6reads for 2019 so far.

I tagged under Words in Deep Blue because I waited SO LONG for that book to come out then was afraid/not in the mood to read it for several years after publication but I finally read it and I loved it and I LOVE Cath Crowley.

I love Julianna and Lucy for contemporary romances, Gross Anatomy is hilarious, and Technically and Evvie hit me over the head this weekend and out of a months long mini-slump.

I didn't love this book but I didn't hate it either. I loved how books were really present in this book. They used the books in the bookstore to write notes back and front to each other. This is my 3rd completed book in the #24b4monday readathon. I am not going to make the 24 hours. Somehow on readathon weekends life always gets in the way of reading!
