The Penguin Book of Witches
The Penguin Book of Witches | Katherine Howe
30 posts | 14 read | 61 to read
Chilling real-life accounts of witches, from medieval Europe through colonial America, compiled by the New York Times bestselling author of The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane and Conversion From a manual for witch hunters written by King James himself in 1597, to court documents from the Salem witch trials of 1692, to newspaper coverage of a woman stoned to death on the streets of Philadelphia while the Continental Congress met, The Penguin Book of Witches is a treasury of historical accounts of accused witches that sheds light on the reality behind the legends. Bringing to life stories like that of Eunice Cole, tried for attacking a teenage girl with a rock and buried with a stake through her heart; Jane Jacobs, a Bostonian so often accused of witchcraft that she took her tormentors to court on charges of slander; and Increase Mather, an exorcism-performing minister famed for his knowledge of witches, this volume provides a unique tour through the darkest history of English and North American witchcraft. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators. From the Trade Paperback edition.

This should have been a bail, probably! Even though I usually ❤️ a book set/written in this period, I really struggled with the language used here.

@CBee #tbrtarot, the book was dedicated to her parents, so I'm counting it for October.

CBee Sorry it was a bust! 6mo

Saying that I was completely riveted by these primary source documents, might be one of the nerdiest things I have ever said, but there it is. Reading these firsthand accounts of witch trials and accusations gave me chills and broke my heart.

Suet624 Oh gosh. That would be tough to read. 3y

I am praying it's the right #witchpleaseswap box and not the Hocus Pocus swap I did, @Quirkybookworm and @monalyisha . If it's not, this busy working mom is a book swap failure. I enjoyed everything I opened and worked hard selecting the items I sent to match as well. Sorry again.

monalyisha It‘s okay; now you‘ll know about the photo op for next time, right? I saw @Quirkybookworm‘s package(s) & there are some super-cute items in there! Thank you for curating it & for taking a picture... of something! (edited) 5y
LiteraryLona I actually opened it on the wrong day and remembered I snapped a pic while driving home from work last night. So glad I found it, I felt a bit like a school child being scolded. This will probably be my last swap! @monalyisha 5y
monalyisha @LiteraryLona Sorry! It‘s part of my job as host to follow-up on things like that. I didn‘t like it either! Some things just aren‘t for us. 🤷‍♀️ 5y
Quirkybookworm Ty I feel bad now. 😳 5y
LiteraryLona You and me both, sister. @Quirkybookworm But, I really loved my box, my kids tore into it and we had stuff everywhere shortly afterwards. Thank you! 5y

Today‘s stop was Salem, Massachusetts and the Salem Witch Trials Memorial!

After exploring a bit, I found the memorial bench for my 11-times great-uncle, John Proctor, then spent some time in the visitor center.

Honestly. What is it with the terrible placement of those barcodey tags, libraries? Why is this necessary? Anyway. Time for some witches on this fine Saturday night. Hope y'all are having a great day/night/morning! ❤️

Superb book, although depressing. I would say that this is a not scary Hallowe'en book, but what is scary is that ignorant men continue to demonize strong, empowered women as "witches" ( witness a certain political candidate). Excellent history, and an engrossing traversal of the primary sources. #AllHallowsRead @Litsy

This is a fantastic compendium of historically accurate documentation of accused witches, dating all the way back to King James himself in 1597. This is some good witchy reading for #scaretober. You can see that Lily is engaged. #recommendsday

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ My first finish for #scaretober #halloweenhorror, which ironically is not a work of fiction. Rather, this an assembly of writings consisting of court depositions, editorials, publications, etc. from actual witch trials. While the primary focus is on witchcraft in New England, a lot of background is provided from England and Europe. Katherine Howe, the editor, provides excellent commentary in the introduction and for each selection.

Linsy Oooh, I need to read this! ⚡️💖 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Real life is scarier than fiction, isn't it? 8y
