The Silmarillion
The Silmarillion | J. R. R. Tolkien; Christopher Tolkien; Ted Nasmith
SUMMARY: The tales of The Silmarillion were the underlying inspiration and source of J.R.R. Tolkien's imaginative writing; he worked on the book throughout his life but never brought it to a final form. Long preceding in its origins The Lord of the Rings, it is the story of the First Age of Tolkien's world, the ancient drama to which characters in The Lord of the RIngs look back and in which some of them, such as Elrond and Galadriel, took part. The title Silmarillion is shortened from Quenta Silmarillion, "The History of the Silmarils," the three great jewels created by Feanor, most gifted of the Elves, in which he imprisoned the light of the Two Trees that illumined Valinor, the land of the gods. When Morgoth, the first Dark Lord, destroyed the Trees, that light lived on only in the Silmarils; Morgoth seized them and set them in his crown, guarded in the impenetrable fortress of Angband in the north of Middle-earth. The Silmarillion is the history of the rebellion of Feanor and his people against the gods, their exile in Middle-earth, and their war, hopeless despite all the heroisim of Elves and Men, against the great Enemy. The book includes several other, shorter works beside The Silmarillion proper. Preceding it are "Ainulindale," the myth of Creation, and "Valaquenta," in which the nature and powers of each of the gods is set forth. After The Silmarillion is "Akallabeth," the story of the downfall of the great island kingdom of Numenor at the end of the Second Age; completing the volume is "Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age," in which the events of The Lord of the Rings are treated in the manner of The Silmarillion. This new edition of The Silmarillion contains the revised and corrected "second edition" text and, by way of introduction, a letter written by J.R.R. Tolkien in 1951, which provides a brilliant exposition of his conception of the earlier Ages. It also contains almost fifty full-color illustrations by the artist Ted Nasmith, many of which appear for the first time.

Reading this today.
I've read this story many times, in multiple versions. It's always exceptionally beautiful and moving.

Let's face it. If this story was written in today's fantasy language, it would be extremely dark and desperate.

Instead, Tolkien chose to write it focusing on desires and even goals, twisted as they may be. And because of this choice, a story that might have been very dark, with an underline of will-power, it's in fact a story of strong wills and desires with an underline of darkness.

I love the story of the founding of Gondolin. I mean: Ulmo and his prophecy, the secret building, the way Turgon and his people disappear. It's so fairytale-like and yet it makes perfect sense in the narration.
I also love how the Vow starts to work its power. Yet Tolkien was always concerned with showing the Elves as fundamentally fair even when deeply troubled. Thingol's episode shows this perfectly.

Tolkien has a way to turn the environment into characters. The rivers and the forests, and the hills, the mountains, the plains and the lakes - all have the quality of characters in this narration.

I think this is why, even if at first glance this may seem like a descriptive chapter, there is still a sense of narration here.

“Of Tuor and the Fall of Gondolin” is one of the stories in The Silmarillion that is only a tiny portion of what Tolkien actually wrote about this event. I had to go look up some other passages and revisit the illustrations by Alan Lee after reading the chapter.

I‘m playing catch up again this weekend. This is another epic story, but unlike most of Tolkien‘s stories that end on a hopeful note, the story of Turin is truly a tragedy. It includes the dragon Glaurung and the sword Gurthang, which are both important and fascinating characters as well.

CatLass007 Thanks for posting this and thanks for the tag. Is the book dragon a bookmark or some kind of post-it? 5d

Daisey @CatLass007 It‘s a magnetic bookmark. It tends to live in whichever of my Tolkien books I‘m reading. 5d
CatLass007 It‘s awesome! I have a book addiction, a bookmark addiction, and a book plate addiction. I‘m not doing a search for a book dragon bookmark. I‘m really not. Really. 5d

Daisey @Roary47 It‘s completely ok to just let a lot of this one wash over you on a first read. There are several separate stories with the Silmarils being the main connecting link. Don‘t get stuck in trying to keep all of it straight. (edited) 4d

“For of us is required a blind trust, and a hope without assurance, knowing not what lies before us... And yet we also love the Earth and would not lose it.”
“…the Valar bid you earnestly not to withhold the trust to which you are called…Hope rather that in the end even the least of your desires shall have fruit. The love of Arda was set in your hearts by Iluvatar, and he does not plant to no purpose.”

BarbaraJean This passage is so fascinating to me, and echoes a lot of my own questions about God and the mysteries of faith and hope and trust. It‘s so interesting to think about Tolkien‘s own faith and how that informed the way he wrote about the “Doom of Men” and the unknown nature of what happens to Men after they die, in the world of Middle-Earth. The Christian parallels are strong here! 6d

This is another action-packed chapter. So many important things happen here.

True to Tolkien's applicability, Feanor's death can be interpreted as his last act of selfishness, but l think, also as his legacy of action to a people that would tend to pause.

The story of Mahedros and Fingon is one of the most endearing in the Silmarillion. They are among Tolkien's best characters. I wish we knew more about them.

Daisey I agree about the story of Fingon & Maedros! Such a great story and an interesting story to compare to Sam finding Frodo after he‘s carried away by the orcs to the tower of Cirith Ungol. 1w
JazzFeathers @Daisey True. It seems one of those stories Tolkien really wanted to tell, and not knowing whether the Silmarillion would ever been published, 'repurposed' them in the Lord of the Rings. I wish he knew how much we love them. 1w

It kind of annoys me that we'll never know what Men ran away from. What was that shadow they feared but could not fight. We can imagine, of course, but it's obvious that Tolkien intended it as a mystery that needs to be accepted as such.

History is mysterious. Some things, we will never know. He created his history in the same way.

The creation of the Sun and Moon must be one of the loveliest such myths I've ever heard.

And l love that Tolkien adopted the ancient belief that the Sun is feminine and the Moon is masculine. And l love that Arien is the most powerful of the two and that, even as a fire spirit, she was not swayed by Morgoth and didn't become a Balrog. In fact, as the Sun, she was among his mightiest enemies.

I really love how Tolkien, here, give us a glimpse of what was happening in Middle-earth while the Valar 'were not looking'.

It gives a sense of a more complex tapestry, as well as a sense that important things happen outside what we consider our world.

Significant things might be happening to us, but what happens in the larger world will eventually impact our life.

It was hard to choose just three pictures!!
This action-packed chapter is, in my opinion, one of the best in the book. Certainly the most epic, with all the vows and the prophesies and the curse. And yet, also so very human, with all those flaws taking over action and decisions.

I love the idea of the Doom of Mandos. Repitedly, it will resurface in the book, almost with its own will. It's an incredible idea.

I've never noticed quite this clearly, but the way Morgoth sways the Noldor is very similar to the way Sauron will sway the Numenoreas.

There are many similarities: the lies believed as truths, the divided people, the rebellion against the Valar, the feeling of displacement. The idea of the exile and the fall seem to be present in both stories, which are therefore subtly connected.

What do you think?

And, here we come to Eol and Aredhel:

“It is not said that Aredhel was wholly unwilling, nor that her life in Nan Elmoth was hateful to her for many years.”

Not a rousing recommendation of their relationship…😬😆

#FellowshipofTolkien #Silmarillion

Daisey Definitely not! This story shows the differences in the intent of enchantments of Melian with those of Eol. The meme did make me laugh though. 2w
JazzFeathers @Daisey And l wonder how much self-censorship there might be here. Might Tolkien have been esitant to include something so horrible as a real rape in his stories? 🤔 2w
BarbaraJean @Daisey It really is such a contrast! And the comment is such understatement. @JazzFeathers Yes, that makes a lot of sense. There‘s a lot that‘s very carefully being toned down or just not being said. Then we get further and stronger hints later when Eol meets Curufin, and he disavows Eol‘s claim to kinship: “those who steal the daughters of the Noldor and wed them without gift or leave do not gain kinship with their kin” (edited) 2w
BarbaraJean @Daisey @JazzFeathers I also wonder how much of a role Nan Elmoth itself plays in both these stories. There is a sense that its enchantments have grown darker, since the time of Thingol and Melian. Clearly Eol prevents Aredhel from finding her way out, but the place itself also seems to play a part. I wonder how much the place itself changed Eol—because of how close it is to Ered Gorgoroth, not far from Ungoliant/her “fell creatures.” 2w
Daisey @BarbaraJean @jazzfeathers You both make some very good points! The location especially may be key. 2w

Here, in a nutshell, is Tolkien's complex discourse about what is good and what is evil, what is right and what is wrong. And the reason why these concepts often mix and merge and telling one from the other may become very difficult.

It is, in my opinion, a beautiful passage.

On first read, it's maybe hard to tell, because at this point, so many things have already happened, but here (in my opinion) is were the story of the Silmarillion truly starts.

Morgoth lusting over the Silmarilli. What a powerful idea.

Melkor is a very 'strange' villain, in my opinion. On the surface, he's very basic: he's pure evil. Yet, the ways his evil works is very very complex.

I'm fascinated with the relationship between Tolkien and Feanor, which started kind of carelessly (in the first draft of the legendary I'm, Feanor and the Silmarilli were clearly just a storytelling devise) and the evolved throughout the author's life.

Feanor is one of my favourite characters in the Silmarillion. Such a complex, difficult, complicated character.

Once, l heard a discussion among fans about whether it was true love between Thingol and Melian, or she had been sent to Middle-earth specifically to enchant him.

I've always thought it is true love, but l was fascinated by the fact that both things were possible.

"Thus it was that the Valar found at last, as it were by chance, those whom they had so long awaited. And Oromë looking upon the Elves was filled with wonder, as though they were beings sudden and marvellous and unforeseen.”

I love this idea that even if the song has already been sung, there remains always a sense of wonder. The concept of Destiny is very complex in Tolkien.

For some reason, I've always loved the story of the Lamps of the Valar and l wish Tolkien had written more about them. The idea of these gigantic lamps illuminating the world... I don't know. There's something magical about it. And then their ruin...

But then, the first part of the Silmarillion, where only the Valar are there, is all exceptionally magical and poetic.

CatLass007 My print copy of The Silmarillion is due to arrive tomorrow. I‘m hugely excited about starting from the beginning with both the print and audio versions. I know I‘m going to be off schedule but I can refer to your posts as I read/listen. 1mo
BethM I think it‘s bc I don‘t know what‘s happening. I‘m listening on audio. Is this like a creation story for the LotR world? 4w
JazzFeathers @CatLass007 Yayyy!!! I think it will be easier to follow on paper. 4w
JazzFeathers @BethM Ahhhh! The Silmarillion is always a bit baffling because there is so much in it. But there is a core story that regards the coursing of the Noldor. I'd suggest, follow that story if this is the first time you read this book. There is so much more in it, but that's for subsequent rereads. If you only focus on the Silmarilli and the course of the Noldor, you'll get a lot more out of the story in this read 😜 4w
JazzFeathers @BethM Also, l really think audio is not the best way for this. It've very easy to get mixed up. Maybe you should try paper or ebook @Daisey what do you think? 4w
Daisey @BethM Yes, it starts with a creation story, but I agree the core of the book is the story of the Silmarils. This is a book I finally feel pretty comfortable with after at least three reads. Now I can listen and follow, but on the first read there‘s no way I would have been able to follow with only audio. 4w

It doesn't matter how many times l read it, the Ainulindele will always touch my heart with his beauty. It is such a poetic origine story. But also, the deeper you get into the lore, the more essential elements in Tolkien's philosophy you can discern here.

I adjusted a previous schedule to include weekly catch up days since I know many of us are reading multiple things and The Silmarillion can be hard reading. I‘m so looking forward to reading this again with you all! I‘d love to see your edition as we get started.

Daisey @BarbaraJean I‘m sure I‘m going to need them as well! Lately it seems I only have time for Litsy on the weekends, so most of my own participation may happen on catch up days. 1mo
JazzFeathers Thanks for this, @Daisey 😁 Once against n, I'll try to read along. I still need to finish the previous two books 😶 1mo

Repost for @Daisey

#FellowshipOfTolkien Readers,
As we continue Tolkien‘s short works, we‘re also considering plans for the next phase of our reading journey. Do you want to start The Silmarillion immediately in February or leave time in between and start reading in March? If votes are fairly even, we can start mid February.

Susanita I‘m not going to reread the Sil at this point, but please keep me on the list. 2mo
BethM I‘d vote feb or mid feb, March seems too far. 2mo
Roary47 Yes, please give me catch up time. 😅 Mid Feb or March please. 🙏🏼 2mo

Daisey @BookwormAHN @CatLass007 @AllDebooks @BethM @Roary47 @BarbaraJean @TheAromaofBooks @JazzFeathers I think I will work on a schedule starting February 18. That gives some catch up time without making us wait until March, and we‘ll start the beginning of the week again. I may also put in a weekly catch up day as The Silmarillion can be pretty dense. 2mo
CatLass007 Sounds good! 2mo
BethM That sounds like a great plan! 2mo

I enjoyed reading this book. It brought out more of the beginnings of Middle Earth. I loved learning more about the characters in the book. I rated this book a 4 out of 5 stars.

I‘ve never read The Simarillion (it didn‘t really interest my 7th/8th grade self, which is when I originally read The Hobbit/LoTR), but now I feel inspired to get to it after my reread of those. So I ordered a copy from Barnes & Noble. And it was part of a buy one, get one 50% off deal, so I picked up a fun sounding fantasy. April must give them a sniff, while keeping my lap warm.

I have been struggling with my new job, but I have been using audiobooks as an aide to get through the day. Last month I listened to Fellowship, Towers, Hobbit, and Return of the King (in that order). Last week I finished the Silmarillion and now I am almost done with Unfinished Tales. Then I found out about #LotRChapterADay . Guess I gotta start over????

Daisey Whether you start over or just jump in to join us for discussion, we‘d love to hear your input! Do you want to be added to the tag list for our posts? 7mo
BarbaraJean You could follow along with episodes from the Prancing Pony Podcast, if it's too soon for a chapter-a-day re-read! https://theprancingponypodcast.com/ I've listened to just a few of their episodes, and they were excellent. I thought about pairing the podcast with the chapter-a-day read, but working remotely and not having a commute are severely limiting my listening time these days! 7mo

I just discovered that Andy Serkis, along with The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, also narrated The Silmarillion. He was brilliant with the others, so I immediately downloaded this one, too 🧡

I have been delaying reading this because of its reputation for being "biblical" and dry. I only wish I had read it earlier. While containing the creation narrative of middle earth, it is very engaging. The legends that are the foundation for The Lord of the Rings are found here. The stories of Beren and Luthien, Túrin, and the Fall of Gondolin are the main stories, presented in a concise fashion. This is essential Tolkien reading.

Bigcountry15 This edition is spectacular. It includes the Waldman letter, in which Tolkien provides a very insightful synopsis of the history of Middle Earth. While the illustrations may not be on par with those of Naismith, Lee, and Howe, seeing Tolkien's vision of his world is valuable. I especially enjoyed the different devices that represent the characters. This edition contains a helpful essay of Tolkien's art. 12mo

Happy Tolkien Reading Day! I just discovered that this was a thing this morning, having been directed to the Kindle deals Amazon is running to celebrate. I just happen to be reading the tagged book. This illustrated edition shows Tolkien was an able artist as well as a literary genius.

I can‘t believe I was so scared to read this one. I adore LOTR and never tire of rereading those, but I thought this one would be more like a textbook. It was a delight! It‘s full of new Middle Earth adventures and the history of many characters I already love. This edition includes beautiful illustrations from the author. I‘m so glad I finally took the time to read it!

“Help oft will come from the hands of the weak when wise falter.”

paulfrankspencer I've always put it off because I'm not as interested in enveloping myself in the world-building, lore, and cast/characters of any given book. But I've heard it is beautiful, at least in parts. Worth it? 14mo
AvidReader25 @paulfrankspencer it‘s definitely beautiful, but it‘s also a lot of world building. If that‘s not your jam, I would skip it. 14mo
