Children's Literature
Children's Literature: A Reader's History, from Aesop to Harry Potter | Seth Lerer
17 posts | 1 read | 4 to read
Ever since children have learned to read, there has been childrens literature. Childrens Literature charts the makings of the Western literary imagination from Aesops fables to Mother Goose, from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland to Peter Pan, from Where the Wild Things Are to Harry Potter. The only single-volume work to capture the rich and diverse history of childrens literature in its full panorama, this extraordinary book reveals why J. R. R. Tolkien, Dr. Seuss, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Beatrix Potter, and many others, despite their divergent styles and subject matter, have all resonated with generations of readers. Childrens Literature is an exhilarating quest across centuries, continents, and genres to discover how, and why, we first fall in love with the written word. Lerer has accomplished something magical. Unlike the many handbooks to childrens literature that synopsize, evaluate, or otherwise guide adults in the selection of materials for children, this work presents a true critical history of the genre. . . . Scholarly, erudite, and all but exhaustive, it is also entertaining and accessible. Lerer takes his subject seriously without making it dull.Library Journal (starred review) Lerers history reminds us of the wealth of literature written during the past 2,600 years. . . . With his vast and multidimensional knowledge of literature, he underscores the vital role it plays in forming a childs imagination. We are made, he suggests, by the books we read.San Francisco Chronicle There are dazzling chapters on John Locke and Empire, and nonsense, and Darwin, but Lerers most interesting chapter focuses on girls fiction. . . . A brilliant series of readings.Diane Purkiss, Times Literary Supplement

I'm teaching (and then revising for the university) a children's literature class online this semester! What are some good books (picture, novel, fiction, nonfiction) I should read?

I'm especially interested in #ownvoices books and books that incorporate technology in some way!

Literary_Siren The Forbidden Library series is really good. I‘m not sure if that‘s the kind of book you‘re looking for. It‘s middle grade fiction. 6y
SaunteringVaguelyDownwards Middle grade works! I'm striving for inclusivity. 6y

The kids have been sharing a bookcase and there's been books stacked everywhere. They're thrilled to have one each and room for all their books. But I can see that it won't be long before they need a third one! (Although there are books there that they have outgrown and that could maybe be put away...) #RaisingReaders #Shelfie

saresmoore It‘s so hard to determine which ones are ready to be retired from the kids‘ shelves! I‘ll take a few out and box them up and it‘s not long before someone asks me, “Hey, Mom, do you know what happened to...?” 7y
Leniverse @saresmoore Yes! My 7 year old will sometimes ask for The Very Hungry Caterpillar, just for nostalgia or something. ? And even the 11 year old might come running then, "oh, are you reading the caterpillar!?" So clearly I can forget about ever retiring that book. ? 7y
Reviewsbylola Oh, love it!! 😍 7y
saresmoore Well, The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a pretty wonderful book. One that I would love to remove permanently is Fox in Socks. I don‘t think anyone would notice, as I‘m pretty sure we all have it memorized. 😬 7y
Leniverse @saresmoore 😂 I think I could safely retire Postman Pat and Cars. My son might even agree to that to make room for more Pokémon manga and Atticus Claw. 7y

And here are a few more of her shelves. She owns all of Mo Willems books, Rosie Revere, Iggy Peck, and Ada Twist books, and tons of Dr. Seuss books. She doesn‘t own too many poetry books, only a few shel Silverstein poem books which she loves.

Tamra Mo Willems! 💜 We‘re still sad he isn‘t writing Gerald & Pigge anymore. My daughter periodically asks me to ask him to write more. 😩 7y
JenP @Tamra my daughter “wrote” an elephant an piggie book for me to give to him when I met him at book expo (I‘ve met him a few times now). She loves Elephant and Piggie! 7y

JenP @Tamra it was essentially a book of scribbles 😂 but pretty cute. He signed it and gave it back to her. For a while she wanted to grow up to be Mo Willems but now she wants to be a gymnast and Veterinarian (edited) 7y
Tamra @JenP what is in the air re: gymnastics? Mine too! Both kids are crazy about it. You need to frame that book! 7y

E has a goodreads wishlist to make it easier for her match. Here are some of the books she owns. She has LOTS of picture books but fewer chapter books so you‘d probably be safest with chapter books. These are the chapter books she owns.

Not pictured: A to Z mysteries - The Absent Author & The Bald Bandit; Sisters Grimm 1 & 2; Harry Potter illustrated books 1-3; The Great Mouse detective book 1 (was afraid of this book).

I rarely give anyone a book I wouldn‘t read myself (I‘d only do this if the person receiving the book liked a book I didn‘t like or wasn‘t interested in). Most books I give to kids are either ones I‘ve read or have looked at recommendations/reviews and would read if I had the time. #children #Quotsy #LitsyQuoteChallenge #QuotsyDec17

I'll be at the Princeton Children's Book Festival today -- will I see any of you Littens there? I'll be wearing a button with my avatar on it, for easy identification. 😀

LectricSheep Princeton is the best! Make sure to get Bent Spoon ice cream. 😍 it's so good. 7y
pocketmermaid @LectricSheep Oooooh. What flavor do you recommend? 🍦 7y
LectricSheep If they have milk chocolate hazelnut, get it! It tastes like a Ferrero Rocher. Any of their sorbets are amazing, especially the raspberry. They're the best ice cream place I've ever found at making ice cream taste EXACTLY like the flavor, so if it sounds good to you, you can't go wrong. 😁 7y
PurpleyPumpkin Have fun!😉 7y

My best friend wants to introduce her two children (ages 4 1/2 and 2) to more diversity especially b/c they live in a predominantly white area. Can anyone recommend some good, diverse children's books?

Soubhiville @LibrarianRyan would be a great person to make some recommendations! 7y
shanebeth anything by Ezra Jack Keats, (edited) 7y
Smangela I have and have read this one and there are some others in the same "series" if you will. I really liked it for telling his story and not sugar coating it, it was honest about the racism he dealt with 7y
Smangela Don't have this one yet but it's on my list! 7y

Kristy_K @Centique I'll look that up. Thanks!! 7y
cathysaid There are several variations of this book for different age levels. It's a true story of a bond that formed between a 130 year old tortoise and a baby hippo. Just lovely ❤️ 7y

Rearranged the house a bit today and ended up with a little bookcase for my daughter's room. She promptly emptied it as she pulled off her favorites to look at. Most of her books are in the living room but I like to have some in most every room for her. 😊😊❤📚 #raisingreaders

So I was on the BOTM page, looking up information on a book when I happened to notice they have jobs posted at the bottom. Seeing as this would be living the dream I clicked. No finance positions, BUT check this out, Littens with children!!

Love getting used textbooks. It's cheaper than taking the class and I actually have time to read the book! (plus, I'm doing a good deed by helping some struggling student get some of their money back)
