A MILLION MEANINGS IN A SINGLE NAME... Heiress. Party girl. Problem child. Selfie taker. Model. Cover girl. Reality star. These are labels that have been attached to Paris Hilton by others. Founder. Entrepreneur. Pop Culture Maker. Innovator. Survivor. Activist. Daughter. Sister. Wife. Mom.These are roles Paris Hilton embraces now as a fully realized woman.Paris rose to prominence as an heiress to the Hilton Hotels empire, but cultivated her fame and fortune as the It Girl of the aughts, a time marked by the burgeoning twenty-four-hour entertainment news cycle and the advent of the celebrity blog. Using her celebrity brand, Paris set in motion her innovative business ventures, while being the constant target of tabloid culture that dismissively wrote her off as "famous for being famous." With tenacity, sharp business acumen, and grit, she built a global empire and, in the process, became a truly modern icon beloved around the world. Now, with courage, honesty, and humor, Paris Hilton is ready to take stock, place it all in context, and share her story with the world. Separating the creation from the creator, the brand from the ambassador, Paris: The Memoir strips away all we thought we knew about a celebrity icon, taking us back to a privileged childhood lived through the lens of undiagnosed ADHD and teenage rebellion that triggered a panicked--and perilous--decision by her parents. Led to believe they were saving their child's life, Paris's mother and father had her kidnapped and sent to a series of "emotional growth boarding schools," where she survived almost two years of verbal, physical, and sexual abuse. In the midst of a hell we now call the "troubled teen industry," Paris created a beautiful inner world where the ugliness couldn't touch her. She came out, resolving to trust no one but herself as she transformed that fantasy world into a multibillion-dollar reality.Recounting her perilous journey through pre-#MeToo sexual politics with grace, dignity, and just the right amount of sass, Paris: The Memoir tracks the evolution of celebrity culture through the story of the figure at its leading edge, full of defining moments and marquee names. Most important, Paris shows us her path to peace while she challenges us to question our role in her story and in our own. Welcome to Paris.

A compelling read and although the chapters seemed a bit choppy and disorganised once Paris explains her journey with her ADHD mind, it became clear that she was writing this book as the thoughts/memories were coming to her and this seemed to be the most organic and rawest way for her to tell her truth. After reading this excellent memoir, I now feel like I know that there is so much more to Paris than anyone ever gave her credit for.🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Loved how candid Paris was in this. A reminder that being born into privilege does not automatically mean that you will always have the best life.

kelli7990 I used to think when I saw the popular, rich kids at my high school that they all had perfect lives but I never hung out with them so I don‘t know their lives or what they were dealing with at home. Rich people can have problems just like the rest of us. 4mo

Was browsing for an audiobook to listen to and stumbled upon this one.

I‘ve only listened about 20% so far and I must say she‘s the perfect example of why we shouldn‘t judge a book based by its cover…

5feet.of.fury It‘s so good! I have been a fan of hers since the Simple Life, but she‘s much deeper than she gets credit for. 4mo
Amor4Libros @5feet.of.fury This has been really eye-opening! You see this people in the media “living their best life” and you just have no idea what they‘ve been through. I‘ve always been indifferent towards her, but I have some newfound respect for her now. 4mo

I was one of those people who spent the early 2000s rolling my eyes at Paris Hilton. I avoided all things Paris, as a matter of principle; though I did, in fact, watch House of Wax to "see Paris die", as the movie marketed it, (and then immediately stopped watching, because, what a terrible movie!) *More in comments*

Kris10H When I watched the documentary, "This is Paris", a couple of years ago, I started to see her from a very different perspective; not just spoiled little rich girl princess, but an actual human being. Paris, The Memoir, continues in that vein. In many ways, she does have a very blessed, privileged existence, but that hasn't made her exempt from hardship, and I definitely respect her for what she has made for and of herself. 7mo
Kris10H "I know we're supposed to spin terrible things to make it sound like they were actually good, but that's bullshit. That heart attack did not save your life. Cancer is not a gift. Your abuser did not give you strength. Terrible things are terrible. Let's just acknowledge it. If you found strength, wisdom, or a new way of thinking, that's awesome, but notice that the strength, wisdom, and new world view came out of you". 7mo

The last book I read in 2023! I wouldn‘t say this book was necessarily well written, but it was still really interesting. You wouldn‘t think that rich people have hard lives, but Paris Hilton truly had such a hard life. I really feel for her (which is crazy bc usually I never pity rich people). I find it so sad to hear her talk about her mother, who is so clearly an awful human. She still excuses what she did to Paris!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I wasn‘t a Paris Fan, more fascinated by her, like Brit, by the culture I had grown up in. But this memoir is eye opening. I did not expect to be saddened, distressed, horrified. I didn‘t realize I would be putting the pages down with a sick feeling in my stomach. Or that my heart would open up to a “privileged” celebrity. Or that I would feel, in MANY ways, that someone like me, a “normie” led a much more privileged and kind life!

This is such a #BlameLitsy, both buying and reading, for me.

I didn‘t know much about Paris Hilton. I saw the paparazzi photographs in the early 2000s, heard about the tape and saw some trailers to her reality show The Simple Life

After reading this I know that Paris Hilton‘s life has been completely different than what I thought. She‘s though, especially mentally. I‘m amazed that she can be so graceful after everything.

“The character I played…was my steel-plated armor. As a teenager, I created her: the dumb blonde with a sweet but sassy edge.”

If you think Paris Hilton is nothing more than an entitled spoiled bimbo, you couldn‘t be more wrong. She‘s a brilliant, resilient, ferocious, jaded, successful, philanthropist and entrepreneurial workaholic.

Honestly, I knew very little about her before reading this. However, she is a strong writer and has one hell of a story. She faced horrific trauma in the years she was “away at boarding school”, and the accounts of abuse and emotional torture from other survivors is finally coming to light.
she‘s a total business badass with a keen sense of fiscal prowess. Her legendary family may have given her the Hilton name, but she built Paris herself.

I‘ve now read 3 celebrity memories this year, more than I have in the last years. I‘ve loved everyone of them. I didn‘t expect the depth, emotion, or intelligence that I got from this. There‘s still fluff but man, she could really be a strong feminist icon if she chose.

This book was not what I was expecting. AT ALL. Paris Hilton was popular in the 90s when I was raising babies, so I didn‘t pay attention to her much. However, I knew that this book wasn‘t just about her partying days but about her time spent in a “troubled youth” home. A big chunk of the book is about that time and y‘all, it is horrifying. As someone who has been through domestic abuse, it was also triggering.

Not going to lie…I never thought that Paris Hilton‘s story would impress me this much. So much heart and angst in this book…like wow, I seriously had no clue that she had gone through so much when she was a teen.
- She narrated this herself…which also surprised me….she did an excellent job at telling her story. I had no idea her voice was as deep as it is….she always used her baby voice in everything I ever heard from her.

I didn‘t know much about Paris Hilton other than what you see over the years in news feeds and tabloids (often skewed or inaccurate). I had no plans to read this until I saw review after review mentioning depth and heartache. So I decided to give it a chance.

Paris‘ honesty, introspection, drive, & humor made this an amazing book. It hit me emotionally harder than I expected & I have such respect and admiration for her after reading this.

A Paris inspired bat? Why not.
I LOVED this. I have always loved her, always knew she was funny &savvy but I initially wanted to dismiss this when in the first few minutes she name dropped Kim & Britney, & blamed being a party girl on her ADHD.
I would have made a huge mistake, this was so compelling. I was yelling outloud at some of the situations from her formative years. Not as gut wrenching as I‘m Glad My Mom Died. But still… really crazy.

1/2 way in-but I have 2 incredibly strange literary/cinematic comparisons to share

1.Paris‘s bimbo persona reminds me of in Game of Thrones when Tyrion tells Jon basically “what they say about you, make that your armor”. So many times she uses peoples perception to her advantage

2.the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. When you think they‘ve escaped but then the people who were “helping” drag them back to Leatherface. That‘s Paris escaping these “schools”

Megabooks This was a crazy surprising wonderful memoir! 1y
5feet.of.fury @Megabooks it was really so incredible! Everything with what she went through with those schools was maddening! I‘m glad she is getting the word out. 1y

As I posted my Sept #BookSpin list I hoped for a landing on my favorite category Litsy Stacked. I really liked reading, The Hiltons: The True Story of an American Dynasty, and based on Litsy posts wanted to prioritize Paris. And yes, it is everything that Litten‘s have been raving about. …Paris, for ever thinking you unremarkable, I‘m sorry. You are the ass-kicker A in ADHD. You go, Girl! ↓

Sep ‘23 #BookSpin Cat: LitsyStacked

marleed Btw, my rule for Litsy stacked is that it‘s on my stacked list (of course), I can‘t own the book (yet), and the it has to be readily available through Libby (or at least sit at ~2wk hold so I can borrow that month). It‘s such a fun way to prioritize a book that isn‘t guilting me on my physical shelves. Somehow I‘ve been lucky enough to hit this category 3-4 times this year! 1y

I would have never picked this up on my own and I would have missed a major aha moment. Paris shares her ADHD story and connected some dots for me in having raised a son with ADHD. I had read everything available back then (he is now 39) but no one talked about the adrenaline junkie piece. Illumination comes from the strangest places 🤯. And that is just a small piece of her story. She has endured much and is so much more than you might think.

So, I owe Paris an apology.
Whenever I saw photos of her or heard her name, I'd roll my eyes and think, "famous for nothing." Now, when I see photos or hear her name, I'll think, "Trauma survivor. ADHD Warrior. Business Woman. Children's Rights Advocate. Rebel. Feminist. Icon. Badass."
If you read one memoir this year, make it this one. It's important.
I now have the utmost respect for this woman. She is brave. She is resilient. She is fantastic.

Sleepswithbooks I had zero interest in this book until I read what you wrote. Now I‘m intrigued….. thank you 😊 1y
jamield1911 @Sleepswithbooks I had my doubts. But it has been the biggest book surprise for me this year. Brilliant! 1y
CuriousG I've seen multiple people expressing this same opinion after giving this memoir a chance. I hope word truly spreads so that people can learn more about her as a person, instead of a flat pop culture image. We make so many judgments about people without having any backstory - it's only natural, but not a great way to understand others. I'm truly looking forward to reading this. 1y
SassyPants617 I felt exactly the way you did about her. I am now on chapter 7 of this book and I‘ve completely changed my mind. And I‘m not even halfway done. I‘m really glad I picked this up. 1y

This is everything.
Both myself and my daughter are diagnosed with ADHD. My daughter also has autism. I have lost count of the number of times people have said we "suffer with ADHD." Or that my daughter "suffers from autism"
Let me tell you, we do not suffer, we're not ill. This is the way our brains work, and it makes us the people we are. But ADHD or Autism is NOT an identity.

AkashaVampie I never thought about that and I am sorry for thinking that way. I don't know if i can say something like that for me (dysthymia - chronic depression). But it does make total sense. 1y
jamield1911 @AkashaVampie being neurodiverse to us is "normal." That's how we were born and how our brain works. At times, our ND brains are wonderful. I think people with autism have it more difficult as my daughters teachers, our family, etc, all use her autism as a way to describe her. And every time, I hit the roof. Autism doesn't define her. It's something she lives with, and we have to make adaptations, but it doesn't define who she is ? 1y

This book is at once everything you‘d expect it to be an so much more. Yes it‘s definitely a story of fame, privilege, partying, and money, but it‘s also a lesson that life is much more than you see online and that reality tv is far from real. I remain convinced audio is the only way to consume this. It was everything I hoped for an made my commute a dream over the last week.

This is a fantastic memoir.

When you think about technology in the 90s and early 2000s, you realize how cutting-edge Paris Hilton really was.

Instagram didn't exist. Facebook was a new thing for college kids. Phones were flip phones. Reality TV wasn't really a thing.

Paris saw the future and became one of the very first influencers.

The time she spent in a reform school for troubled teens was harrowing to listen to.

I'm very impressed.

A surprisingly deep (at times) reflection on Paris‘s horrible experiences in wilderness survival “schools” after her repeated rebellions as a young teen. While it was surprising that this rich, famous, diamond-clad party girl went through these difficult times, I‘ve read another memoir that explains the experience of being there much better . Also, a little too much description of her outfits for me. I did appreciate the early 2000s vibes!

Several good ones and a couple of real stinkers. Overall, a decent month! Sadly no 5-star reads, but my favorite was probably the Hilton memoir.

Paris: The Memoir | Paris Hilton

Pickpick

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Realizing Paris Hilton and I are the same age threw me for a loop! Time perspective is a weird thing. Add me to the list of folks pleasantly surprised / impressed by this memoir. Sure there‘s a lot about being a young, beautiful socialite, but much focus is on her experiences in “troubled teen” facilities. Her willingness to fight against this screwed up industry is admirable and so important! Solid celebrity memoir.

Megabooks Agree!! Glad you enjoyed it too. 2y
Hooked_on_books I‘m amused that it‘s “the” memoir instead of “a” memoir, which is more typical. 😆 2y
britt_brooke @Hooked_on_books 😂 You‘re right. I hadn‘t noticed! 2y
