Three Ages of Water: Prehistoric Past, Imperiled Present, and a Hope for the Future
Three Ages of Water: Prehistoric Past, Imperiled Present, and a Hope for the Future | Peter Gleick
11 posts | 5 read | 6 to read
A revelatory account of how water has shaped the course of human life and history, and a positive vision of what the future can hold--if we act now From the very creation of the planet billions of years ago to the present day, water has always been central to existence on Earth. And since long before the legendary Great Flood, it has been a defining force in the story of humanity. In The Three Ages of Water, Peter Gleick guides us through the long, fraught history of our relationship to this precious resource. Water has shaped civilizations and empires, and driven centuries of advances in science and technology--from agriculture to aqueducts, steam power to space exploration--and progress in health and medicine. But the achievements that have propelled humanity forward also brought consequences, including unsustainable water use, ecological destruction, and global climate change, that now threaten to send us into a new dark age. We must change our ways, and quickly, to usher in a new age of water for the benefit of everyone. Drawing from the lessons of our past, Gleick charts a visionary path toward a sustainable future for water and the planet.

Read for #Naturalitsy here is my lady my book of March. I thought this look at the importance of water was interesting & engaging than I expected. It did get a bit dry (pun fully intended) at times but the blend of history, science & technology kept me reading. Everyone deserves access to clean water! 💧 ⬇️

Yesterday was the peopling-ist of peopling days. I left my house at 4:15 AM to catch a flight to Hilo & was in an all-day meeting with 30ish people & had to present. Then a drink with many of those people in the hotel bar before exceeding my airport before flight time comfort & catching a 6 PM flight back to Oahu & giving a co-worker a ride home where she asked to stop for take out. I walked in the door at 8:30 PM. Normally my flights & airport ⬇️

DebinHawaii …time are when I read & reenergize but I had another colleague next to me who chatted the whole flight home. It was good to bond with him more but my introvert soul was so tired from being “on stage” all day with no time to think or relax. So today I‘m in a quiet corner in the neighborhood coffeeshop to journal & read & catch up with Litsy while getting fed & caffeinated. Trying to finish up this one for #Naturalitsy 8mo
squirrelbrain Ugh - peopling. 🙄 That pup picture is so cute though! 8mo

I generally enjoyed this - parts 1 and 2 more than part 3 as I enjoyed the more historical aspects. Part 3 was more in terms of what we can do to help us get out of the mess we are in. Generally enlightening.

Yesterday was Mother‘s day here in the UK. I had a wonderful, relaxing day with my 4 children. ❤️🌷📚🕯🎂 It was bliss. My #hyggehour readathon was extended across the whole day tbh and I loved it.

I borrowed this audio for #naturalitsy. I thought it was well written and contained a wealth of knowledge about how human civilization evolved around water, the issues we‘ve caused by overusing and polluting, and a discussion of how we can change our habits and laws in order to fix the looming water shortage crisis that will arise if we do nothing.

I really appreciate that the author included extensive solutions and hope that this can be fixed.
